Desktop Linux and OS X use MIME types instead of extensions to determine what
the file type is. They know a text file named bar.jpg is a text file, and a
PNG named foo.txt is a PNG, so unless they made one where you placed the MIME
type in

FWIW, the MIME type is easily modified too... hence the need to check
inside the file to figure out what it really is. Does anyone do
this? Rarely.

Which is easily modified by anyone and everyone. You must check the
MIME type on the server. Even better, look deeply into the file to
determine what its file type is.
