Thanks Justin, this worked! (as long as I gave the junction a different name than the original!)
so now I have: \Site1\Components \Site2\MyComponents (which is a junction to \Site1\Components). The application.cfc from site2 is now honored, whether you call the component via cfobject or an AJAX bind. Phew!
