It gives me a simple and interesting idea. What happens if we just put there a wifi access-point[1], not connected to the internet[2]. People will connect to that network. Some of them will offer services for others. Services are to be presented using zeroconf to make discovering them simple. An ircd is one such service. Having several of them in a network is probably too complicated to set up. But who needs that? As a sanity check, I will not suggest any other potential services. But if you want others to use some non-trivial service, better ask others in advance to install the required packages. Setup requirements from management: several power sockets. I have a spare wifi router and a switch I can bring along. (Activities in the subject line comes from the word heavily used in the Sugar user interface of e.g. OLPC, as many of them use zeroconf) [1] Potentially - several of them, connected through a simple ethernet switch, with a single DHCP server on that LAN. This is still simple enough. [2] Any simple way to provide an internet connection? I will not bother for that. -- Tzafrir Cohen | tzaf...@jabber.org | VIM is http://tzafrir.org.il || a Mutt's tzaf...@cohens.org.il || best tzaf...@debian.org|| friend ___ Discussions mailing list Discussions@hamakor.org.il http://hamakor.org.il/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/discussions

What happens if 100,000 (or even 30) clients try to connect to my miserable laptop? On the other hand, it is my understanding that an IRC client is in contact only with a single entity (the IRC server somewhere out in the Internet). My 'gobby' suggestion fit your original need and is so much easier (have you configured/managed an IRC server?) that I wonder why are we trying to solve a hypothetical 100,000 subscribers problem. I am looking for a solution which can deal with 100,000 subscribers so that it'll be guaranteed to be scalable and not break down once 20 people try to connect to my laptop. Have you tried gobby at all? (let's say with 5 people?) Not yet - should I try it, given the above? --- Omer -- Bottom posters are filthy heretics and infidels and ought to be burned on the stake after having been tarred, feathered and having rotten eggs thrown at their faces! On Mon, 2010-07-12 at 08:04 +0300, Ram-on Agmon wrote: -- Bottom posters are filthy heretics and infidels and ought to be burned on the stake after having been tarred, feathered and having rotten eggs thrown at their faces! Re: Streaming typed transcript over the Internet (was: Re: Accessibility for the hard of hearing in August Penguin 2010)
On Mon, 2010-07-12 at 08:04 +0300, Ram-on Agmon wrote: -- Bottom posters are filthy heretics and infidels and ought to be burned on the stake after having been tarred, feathered and having rotten eggs thrown at their faces!
