Hi, just sharing few toughts, since we talk here on "diversity", this might also bring the issue of "inequality". These are similar terms, somehow conected to each other, but different concepts. Both terms refer to the idea of "difference", "not equal". Both terms bring the idea of "inclusion."
"Diversity" usually refers to "the political and social policy of encouraging tolerance for people of different backgrounds" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diversity#Sociology,_politics_and_law). Essentially, people are diverse, in any scale of groups: familiar, local, professional, national, global. And that's essentially good. There's a diversity of knowledges people can contribute to the community where they are included. The meaning of "inequality" takes a slightly different aproach. Usually it refers nowadays to economic aspects. "Economic inequality is the difference found in various measures of economic well-being among individuals in a group, among groups in a population, or among countries." (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economic_inequality). We realize that people are very different, not in terms of their essence, but in terms of their existences, that is, the material conditions for their existences, and that's not good. Inequality has been increasing world around in recent years. It may be a barrier against a healty diversity. Great levels of economic inequality bring many pernicious efects, such as ignorance, radicalism, hostilities to differents, many sorts of political tensions. We can see recent reports and statistics made even by liberal organizations, such as Oxfam, Credite Suisse, pointing out that there is a growing gap due to economic inequality, showing all the negative consequences of that, and that there should be an active effort to mitigate such great inequality: (2016) https://www.oxfam.org/sites/www.oxfam.org/files/file_attachments/bp210-economy-one-percent-tax-havens-180116-en_0.pdf (2017) https://www.oxfam.org/sites/www.oxfam.org/files/file_attachments/bp-economy-for-99-percent-160117-en.pdf (2017) https://www.credit-suisse.com/corporate/en/research/research-institute/global-wealth-report.html - - - - - (Sorry, not native english; portuguese) . Just few thoughts. Sure there could be much more to deepen in these issues. -Do we see any implication of the related aspects of diversity and inequality inside our own OSM ecosystem? Could the OSM community deal with it? How? -Would there be something that the OSM community could do to help our world to achieve more diversity and less inequality? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Sérgio - http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/smaprs
