The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples <https://www.un.org/en/events/indigenousday/>is 9 August. This day recognizes the achievements and contributions of the world's 370 million indigenous people who live in more than 90 countries.

I wish to join the world in honouring and acknowledging the resilience, dignity and strength of indigenous peoples around the world.GEO community are marking this day by announcing the launch of the GEO Week 2019 Hackathon,an innovative hackathon to advance the use of Earth observation (EO) data by and for youth in indigenous communities. The hackathon is being managed by Diana Mastracci with support from the GEO community. The hackathon will address EO-based challenges and will be co-designed by indigenous youth throughout the world. The goal is to encourage the co-development of innovative EO-based applications that are locally relevant and enhance the communities way of learning. It will promote the use of open EO data among indigenous communities and ultimately to co-design locally relevant free and open source software. This will result in new means for aligning local/ traditional knowledge and science co-production across cultural and generational lines.[1],[2].

Join us for the GEO Week 2019 and the GEO Ministerial Summitin Canberra, Australia (4-9th Nov 2019). Canberra means ‘meeting place’ in Ngunnawal, the local indigenous language. Recognizing the history of the land and its traditional custodians, GEO Week will bring together diverse people and cultures to support and sustain our planet and communities.

Best wishes,

Suchith
