Greetings
A friend and mentor in all things Linux was a proponent of Devuan.
Sadly he died some months ago so I now have to ask those I don't know
possibly stupid questions.
I have run Debian systems for some 15 to 18 years (can't remember when
I switched from Fedora Core but a long time ago).
Directory entry?

Not in my opinion. Some people get infuriated when confronted with
"insider" acronyms, which is what fd sounds like. Also, fd is

Directories are just files that contain file metadata information in a format
specific to the filesystem

if you refer to the "string" to object on the filesystem, "path" is a
good word for it.
