pulseaudio by default doesnt run 'systemwide' and typically only allows
'the user that started it' access to the audio devices (aka, your steam
user)

maybe google about systemwide-pulseaudio , or checkout pipewire perhaps

Correct, it's audiocard just has a single mixer for PCM.

in my experience, 9 out of 10 times 'unable to use USB stick for booting'
is just partition layout (partition not starting on 4MB interval or wrong
type/flags)

FYI , i had great success with the -pi3 , -pi1 and -sunxi images. Just
install like normal (dd the image to SD , check dhcp leases for the IP ,
ssh into it with root:toor) and upgrade to ascii after that​ like you
normally would on any install.
