Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Uploading Base Chapters ready for review
Dan, I've got a bit lost in the various Getting Started with Base files you have been producing lately. Please help me sort this out so I'm sure I've got it right. This file's title page says it is Chapter 1 of the Base Guide. An earlier version showed it as being in the Getting Started Guide but was essentially the same file. If this one is in fact for the Base Guide, I suggest we rename it Introducing Base or something similar, to minimize the confusion. Would also help to use the file naming/numbering system to make it clear to all which file is intended for which book. If this is for the Base Guide, does that mean that I was mistaken about the earlier version being for the Getting Started guide? Are you planning to produce a replacement chapter (as I recall you mentioning earlier this year), or do you want to keep the existing one, just updated? --Jean On Sun, Dec 29, 2013 at 3:30 AM, Dan Lewis elderdanle...@gmail.com wrote: The folder for these files is here. www.odfauthors.org/libreoffice/english/base-guide/draft-4.x/ The files are: Getting Started with Base Data Input and Removal: Tables Both of these have had their screenshots updated for 4.2.0 already. I have externally published both chapters. I have not updated the wiki because I am getting very slow Internet service right now. (Probably many more people are accessing it causing the slow down.) Later today I will be working on chapter 4: Data Input and Removal: Forms. Much of the material for this new chapter can be copied and pasted from the Data Input and Removal chapter. So, this chapter may well be ready by the end of January. Since I use Calibre for creating ePUB formated files, I have learned that the last two versions of it has editing abilities that are better than Sigil. Sigil allows the searching and replace for only one internal xhtml file. Calibre can do this for all of the xhtml files at one time. This can also be done with regex expressions as well. Some things can be done better with Calibre, and other things can still be done with Calibre. I still have some experimenting to do as well as learning regex. --Dan -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: documentation+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/documentation/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: documentation+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/documentation/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted
Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Uploading Base Chapters ready for review
I had forgotten that discussion (my memory is full :-) ) but it's coming back to me and if I took the time to search my email I'd probably find it. I agree that reusing the same text for both chapters is a good approach, and if that's Dan's idea I'm fine with it. However, I'm not in favour of trying to do it automatically. That's technically possible but messy in a volunteer situation. --Jean On Sun, Dec 29, 2013 at 7:18 PM, Tom Davies tomc...@gmail.com wrote: Hi :) I thought there was some discussion about whether to have the chapter identical in the GS Guide and as the 1st main chapter of the Base Guide so that editing one would affect the other automatically. I just wasn't sure whether it had been decided if that was a great idea or awkward. Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Version 4.2 Getting Started Guide
Thanks for this work, Martin. I've just had a quick look at your additions to the User Guide Tasks page, which are just what we need. I just hope other people pay attention to them, as well as doing their own reviewing, when updating the chapter files. If you, or anyone else, want to start doing updates to the chapter files, you can use the 4.0 files from here: http://www.odfauthors.org/libreoffice/english/getting-started/published-lo-4.0 or from here: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Publications#Getting_Started_with_LibreOffice Both sets have had Milos's style cleanups applied. Please put the edited files here (as you did for chapter 1): http://www.odfauthors.org/libreoffice/english/getting-started/draft-lo-4.2 --Jean On Sun, Dec 22, 2013 at 3:05 AM, Martin Saffron martinsaff...@gmail.com wrote: Hello I've recently had time to look at sections of the Getting Started guide with a view to updating it to the LO 4.2 branch. I've taken a look at the first three chapters (of the most recent published versions edited by Jean) and noted the changes brought about in the Windows 8.1 version of LO 4.2 beta 2. I did not edit any of the guides directly and upload them as I was unsure whether to edit the recent versions published by Jean or to make edits to the auto-formatted versions submitted to the mailing list by Milos. There is also the fact that the stable LO 4.2 release may introduce further changes. Instead, I've made a detailed list of the aspects that will need updating upon release of LO 4.2 and noted some of them here: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Development/UserGuideTasks Unfortunately, in submitting the form (as a test) before adding all the notes, I have been throttled so am unable to make further changes until the anti-spam time limit expires. I have attached an ODT file containing all the changes so perhaps someone can update the page on my behalf. I'll continue looking at the Getting Started guide when I get time (leaving chapters 4, 6, 7 and 8 as noted on the User Guide tasks page above).
