[libreoffice-documentation] Print copies of Base Guide 7.3

2022-06-20 Thread Jean Weber
I have published the print edition of BG7.3. I made the changes I
reported earlier.
https://www.lulu.com/shop/libreoffice-documentation-team/libreoffice-73-base-guide/paperback/product-gm84d9.html

When an updated version of the book is published, I can easily replace
the interior files to the print edition is also updated.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Numbered Lists

2022-06-16 Thread Jean Weber
The person who wrote this (some years ago) was talking about headings, not
lists. They meant the reader would get lost in the heading numbering
system. The passage needs to be rewritten.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Figure captions in a single line

Recently I’ve tried changing the % on the image instead of using a fixed
width. This seems to work, but takes more guessing and practice to get a
good result.

I do it by selecting the *image* and changing its properties from a percent
to a specified width. Then I can change the width of the frame (that
encloses the image + caption) without affecting the image.

[libreoffice-documentation] Some formatting issues with Base 7.3 Guide

2022-06-10 Thread Jean Weber
A few of the Tips have code within them. This has caused some
formatting to be slightly wrong.

Page 263 (in Chapter 5 Queries) has two Tips. The first paragraph in
the one at the top has a line under it, which should be removed
manually, so it's clear that the code and other paragraphs are part of
the Tip. The paragraph after the first set of code does not have a
line, so I assume it was manually removed, which is good.

On pages 382-383, the two blocks of code within the Tip are not
indented to line up with the text, so it's unclear that they are all
part of the Tip, especially with two of the internal paragraphs having
the end-of-Tip line under them. I suggest the best way to handle this
particular instance is to make it not a Tip, but something else that
isn't indented; perhaps an example?

[You can see examples of Tips with embedded code that are properly
lined up, with no extra underlines, on page 402 and 406. Because the
code doesn't have the grey background, I suspect this was done using a
character style or even a manual font change. Not the best approach,
but the visual result is clear.]

The Tip at the bottom of page 273 is continued on the next page, but
the line under the last sentence on page 273 makes it look like that
is the end of the Tip.

The Tip at the bottom of page 284 is continued on the next page. There
is room for the entire Tip on page 285, so the first paragraph should
be made "keep with next".

[libreoffice-documentation] More about publishing printed copies of user guides

2022-05-27 Thread Jean Weber
VERY IMPORTANT
Whoever does the publishing will need to set up a new account, whether at
Lulu or somewhere else. I will not be turning over my account to anyone
else, or allowing anyone else to use it.

SOME BACKGROUND
Around 15 years ago I set up the account at Lulu. At the time it was the
only practical choice for a print-on-demand service for a person or
organisation that does not want to deal with fulfilment. I think it is
still the best choice. One can sell through the Lulu bookstore (with or
without an ISBN) and/or put the book into “global distribution” which gets
it into Amazon and other outlets. (HOWEVER, if you choose global
distribution, you must have an ISBN and the cost of copies is much higher
than if sold only through the Lulu bookstore. Also, the requirements for
PDFs are sometimes more difficult to meet. Long story.)

Many people use Amazon Kindle Direct (which, despite the name, does
paperbacks as well as ebooks), but their choices are more limited, and
potential US tax hassles (or the requirements to legally avoid them) are
greater. I won’t deal with Amazon or their terms of service, but someone
else might not mind.

[libreoffice-documentation] Re: Process for creating printed books at Lulu

2022-05-27 Thread Jean Weber
Obviously, the easiest solution is to have someone with a Mac shrink the
pages, after they or someone else (such as Olivier) has done some necessary
pre-processing. Olivier or whoever can then do the rest of the publishing
process.

I will write separately about pre-processing and the rest of the publishing
process. The 6x9-inch covers are also an issue, which I will write about.

formatting errors that I am sure were not there in Peter's copy that I
checked earlier. Here is my list of errors found (page numbers are
from the final PDF as downloaded from NextCloud):

Page 23: Figures 6 and 7 have an extra blank line between the image
and the caption.
Page 24: Figure 8 has an extra blank line between the image and the caption.
Pages 28, 42, 73, 118, 143, 186, 226, 298, 328, 361: the list
numbering does not restart at 1. It looks like your "plumbing" removed
the explicit "restart at 1" from the first list item in each chapter.
There are also a lot of bad page breaks that were not in Peter's copy.
I am not going to list them

I will fix these problems in the ODT and PDF of the full book, before
I create the file for the print copies.

[libreoffice-documentation] Process for creating printed books at Lulu

2022-05-24 Thread Jean Weber
Hello Olivier and Docs Team,

I have started writing up my process for creating printed books
through Lulu. Some steps may need to be modified if Olivier or someone
else takes this over who does not use a Mac. I will explain.

I do the printed books in a 6x9-inch size, not the full A4 of the
PDFs. This is to save printing costs and thus the cost to purchasers.
Lulu requires a book file (PDF) to be provided in the selected page
size, so I have to create a suitable file. It is quick and easy to do
on a Mac: I use the Mac's built-in Preview app to "print" the original
A4 PDF to a PDF with a 6x9-inch page size. I do not know what the
equivalent method may be on Windows or Linux. I may have asked this
question here before, but I do not recall the answer (if any).

Of course, someone else could avoid that step and produce the books
full-size (A4) and purchasers would have to pay the extra printing
cost (probably double) and postage cost. Thoughts?

(There are some other issues to consider, which are unrelated to the
page size. I will mention them in separate notes.)

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Impress Guide 7.3

2022-05-19 Thread Jean Weber
Olivier,

Some of your settings in the ODM are causing the layout (page breaks)
to go wrong. The settings are on the Tools > Options > LibreOffice
Writer > Compatibility page. You need to deselect "Add paragraph and
table spacing at tops of pages" and "Add spacing between paragraphs
and tables".

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Writer 7.4: Outline folding no more experimental

2022-05-14 Thread Jean Weber
This appears to still be experimental in the Alpha1 of LO 7.4 on
macOS, because the Outline Folding selection in Options does not
"stick" unless Experimental Features is active. Do you know when this
is expected to change? Also, the description in the Help page does not
match the behaviour.

Olivier,

In the printed books I have not followed the convention that chapters
should start on odd-numbered page, because I did not want to have blank
pages. But If I want to do it, here is the method I use: I make the First
Page style right-page only. Then when exporting to PDF, check the box for
including automatic blank pages. Default Page Style stays mirrored.

Are the number of downloads of the various user guides (PDF) recorded? I

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Writer Guide 7.3 published

Olivier, thank you. Please do fix the covers. I had installed and used the
Trueno fonts but they did not work correctly for me on my Mac.

The chapter and book files also need to be “cleaned” using that Python
script.

[libreoffice-documentation] Reviewing Chapter 7 of Writer Guide 7.3

2022-03-21 Thread Jean Weber
I added material on the Mac Print dialog to Chapter 7 of Writer Guide 7.3.
I need two people to review it, if possible.
One person who does NOT use Mac, to see if the way I have added the
new material is confusing.
One person who DOES use Mac, to see if the info is correct and also if
the way I have added it is confusing.
Thanks to all!

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Printed Manuals

2022-03-17 Thread Jean Weber
I am the person who has been doing the printed guides for about 15 years
now. I plan to do another set at some point, probably late this year or
early next year, but it’s unusual for all books to be updated for any one
release, so it’s likely to be an incomplete set.

BTW, I’ve been disappointed in the way the printed covers have been turning
out. The artwork provided for the PDFs is great, but it needs some
modification for print (trim and bleed). I’ve been trying some different
techniques, but none has worked out well IMO.

[libreoffice-documentation] Writer Guide 7.3

2022-03-15 Thread Jean Weber
All chapters- except Preface & Master Docs - are in the WiP folder. The
status spreadsheet includes notes on what has changed. Most chapters have
no changes. I encourage reviewers to look first at the chapters that have
been changed. Change tracking was on for non-trivial changes.

I’ll be working on the final two files soon.

[libreoffice-documentation] Ping PeterS: Master Docs chapter in Writer Guide?

2022-03-12 Thread Jean Weber
Peter, do you still intend to rewrite the chapter on master documents for
the Writer Guide? If so, when do you expect to have a draft done? The rest
of the book doesn’t need a lot of updating, other than 2 or 3 chapters, so
it should get done fairly quickly.

2022-02-21 Thread Jean Weber
ODTs of all chapters, and the full book, of Getting Started 7.3 are in
the Published folder on NextCloud. Status spreadsheet is updated.
I did some final formatting fixes (such as making sure the first
numbered list in each chapter was explicitly set to restart at 1), so
if you are taking copies of published chapters, you may wish to get
the final versions.
Full book PDF is on NextCloud. I will produce and upload chapter PDFs
soon, and then add the book to the Pubs page on the wiki.
Thanks to those who reviewed chapters.

one else is available to do this, I will do it.

For Ch5, do any of the changes/improvements in Calc itself need to be
mentioned in this book?

For Ch13, should I copy the list of macro scripting resources

than is needed in this book?

I will start publishing the other chapters today. I will also finish

[libreoffice-documentation] Getting Started Guide 7.3

2022-02-02 Thread Jean Weber
Hi team,
As you know, LO 7.3 was announced yesterday. Would be good if we can
finish updating the book and get it published.

I am revising the chapters that I updated and Kees reviewed. As I get
them done, I am putting them in WiP with _02_ in the filenames and
updating the Status spreadsheet. People can do second reviews if you
wish, but most of the UI changes have been minor, so that may not be
necessary; the major items are behind the scenes AFAICT.

Peter has updated the Impress and Draw chapters. I think that flywire
(whoever that is) will be working on Ch8 (Base).

Other chapters needing someone to update them, or say that no changes
are required, are Calc, Macros, and Keyboard Shortcuts. I will do the
Preface last.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Updating the Getting Started Guide

2022-01-30 Thread Jean Weber
I've hunted around to see if I could find your reviewed copy of that
chapter, but I can't find it. I have no idea what may have happened to
it.

Please do whatever you think is necessary to fix the chapter,
including updating the info on JRE/JDK for macOS.

I apologize for not responding earlier about Automobile.odb. I have
now found a more comprehensive version of that file and put it here:
https://nextcloud.documentfoundation.org/apps/files/?dir=/LibreOffice%20Documentation/English/Contributor%20Resources=81380
It may be the one used for the illustrations in that chapter. I'm sure
some of the data needs improvement, so please feel free to update it
and replace screenshots as needed in the chapter.

The copy on the wiki is, I think, deliberately lacking in detail so
people following the tutorial can fill it in themselves, so I have not
replaced it.

[libreoffice-documentation] MacOS info for all books

2022-01-22 Thread Jean Weber
In the WG and GS, I am adding a row to the table about "Using LO on
macOS" and I suggest this be added in all books.
Between the row for Ctrl (Control) and the row for F11, insert:
Alt⌥ (Option) Used with other keys

Here is the latest info for macOS regarding JRE. Previous versions of
GS and WG had info that is now out of date, and Base doesn't seem to
have anything about macOS; I don't remember which of the other books

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Base v7.3: Chapter 1 - BG7301

2022-01-22 Thread Jean Weber
Steve,
A few comments, related to macOS.

1) Table on Copyright page for macOS equivalents needs updating with a
row for Alt:
Alt ⌥ (Option) Used with other keys

Also, the width of the columns in that table could be improved.

2) On pages 6-7, info on Java needs a few words about macOS. Here is
what I wrote for Getting Started 7.3, based on current info (older
editions of GS had an out-of-date link):

For macOS, you need to install Oracle’s Java Development Kit (JDK),
not just the Java Runtime Environment (JRE). Download links can be
found at: https://www.oracle.com/java/technologies/downloads/#jdk17-mac

[libreoffice-documentation] Draft chapters for Getting Started 7.3

2022-01-12 Thread Jean Weber
I have put ten chapters of GS 7.3 on NextCloud. Tracked changes. Ready for
review. Status spreadsheet updated. I’m sure I’ve missed something, so
please review carefully.

Other chapters (including Calc, Draw, Impress, Base) should probably be
updated by other people, but I suspect not much is needed - 7.3 seems to be
mostly behind-the-scenes improvements or details best left to the component
guides.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Draw Guide 7.2 published

2022-01-06 Thread Jean Weber
While preparing the print version of the book, I noticed a problem with a
page footer in the contents pages; the Front Matter page style was
incorrectly defined. I fixed the problem, regenerated the PDF, and replaced
the ODT and PDF in NextCloud. Olivier, you may wish to replace the PDF on
the website.

Once again, I encourage everyone to have me check compiled books for
formatting errors.

I am continuing to work on the print edition.

Thank you for the excellent suggestions. I don't think anyone has done
a thorough review of that chapter in several years; I know I have not
looked closely at it, or at the automobile.odb. Now we need someone to
actually make the changes, in both the database and the chapter. I'll
do it if no one else does, but not soon.

[libreoffice-documentation] Jean’s January plans

2022-01-01 Thread Jean Weber
Hello, team! I hope you are continuing to be well and are looking forward
to a busy year. Here are my plans for January.

1) When Peter publishes the Draw Guide, I will produce the print edition.

2) I will publish the book mentioned in my previous note (macOS edition of
Writer Guide), either as an official LO book or as my own.

3) I have started work on the v7.3 editions of GS and WG and hope to get
many chapters out for review quickly. I will mark the status spreadsheets
and ask people to update some of the chapters if needed; you probably know
who you are.

[libreoffice-documentation] LO 7.2 Writer Guide macOS edition

2022-01-01 Thread Jean Weber
I have created a version of the Writer Guide 7.2 specifically for
users of macOS.
The changes include "translating" keyboard keys from the Windows/Linux
default to their Mac equivalents; replacing Windows/Linux screenshots
with Mac equivalents (most screenshots were already taken from macOS);
rewording some sections as required (removing Windows or Linux
specific instructions). The only major change was about the Print
dialog, which is quite different on macOS. I also amended the covers
to include the words "macOS edition".

I have put a PDF of the compiled book, and ODTs of individual
chapters, in a NextCloud folder (MacOS Edition) under English > Writer
Guide > 7.2. Feel free to review and comment. I'm sure I've missed
something or made some errors; I always do.

Would the team like to have this book as part of the documentation
set? I am unlikely to update it very often, and I am unlikely to
produce a macOS edition of any other books except possibly the Getting
Started Guide - if I have time.
If it's not wanted as an official user guide, I will rebrand it
(different cover, copyright and chapter title pages) and publish it as
a "Taming LibreOffice" book on my website.

The USA (where Dan lives) and Australia (where I live) are as large as all
of Europe, and many people drive long distances each day when they go on
holiday - sometimes as much as 1,000 km or more. So they might need to
refuel several times, especially if they don’t want to let the fuel level
get low.

It’s the trip odometer, usually reset to zero at the start of a long trip,
not the total distance travelled by the car since it was new.

Different adult family members or a group of friends travelling in one
vehicle often do this, to share costs.

I think it is. I and others have used it occasionally to recreate images.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Page Styles - problem

Peter,
Sorry, there’s an easier way to deal with the pages following the First
Pages, but this is only good in the compiled book*:
Go to the Organizer tab for the First Page style and change the Next Tyle
to Default Page Style.
*If you do this in the template, it will mess up chapter files.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Page Styles - problem

2021-12-22 Thread Jean Weber
Peter, look in Chapter 9, Working with Styles, in the Writer Guide. In the
section “Text flow options for paragraph styles” there is a figure* showing
the TextFlow tab of the Paragraph Style dialog. For the New Chapter
paragraph style, in the Breaks area on the upper right, be sure “With page
style” is checked, and that it’s set to First Page.
* In the full book, this is Figure 208 on page 197.

To fix the following pages, you need to change that setting on the first
paragraph (H1) of the chapter text. NOT the paragraph style in this case.
Change it to Default Page Style. This is the way it’s done in chapters, but
sometimes that gets lost when you copy-paste into the full book.

That Appendix is not included in newer editions of the Calc Guide. It was

[libreoffice-documentation] Math Guide 7.2 ready for review

2021-12-08 Thread Jean Weber
I have updated the Math Guide to v7.2. Major changes have been
tracked. I also added captions to the tables in Appendix A that did
not already have them, and I made some minor wording changes in the
chapter, taking some from the Getting Started chapter and adding some
others, including improving some of the x-refs to be more specific
than they were. I did not track all of those changes; sorry.

If someone could review what I have done, we should be able to publish
this small book soon.

The file is in the Math Guide 7.2 Work in Progress folder on NextCloud.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Thoughts on the Base Guide

2021-11-29 Thread Jean Weber
Steve,
I would be fine with issuing a cosmetic "update" to complete the set
of v7.2 user guides. IIRC, I have done that before with at least one
other book, though possibly back in OO days.

I have checked the section "Creating mail merge documents" in Chapter
7, which I said I would update. I see only one figure that is out of
date (top of page 11, the first figure in that section), but the
change in it is minor and does not affect the instructions. It could
be left as it is.

I do not have a problem with bugs being mentioned or listed; in fact,
as a user I would likely find them helpful if I ran into a problem
with the software, and I would appreciate the honesty. However, I do
agree that the wording of some statements about bugs could be made a
lot more diplomatic.

I agree that the book would be improved for English audiences by
replacing the German examples in the sample databases, and of course
all the other improvements and restructuring that others have
suggested. But all that is work for a later edition.

Regards, Jean

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] LibreOffice Base Guide

2021-11-22 Thread Jean Weber
I have now checked Chapter 7 of the Base Guide, which covers (among
other things) the Mail Merge function, which uses Writer. There have
been some changes: relatively minor, involving a few of the Mail Merge
dialogs and including at least one extra function. I can update these
in the BG chapter using material from the WG chapter. Someone else
(perhaps you) will need to do the part of BG Ch7 on Calc.

I also think there may have been a minor issue with one of the sample
databases, but I will have to check on that and get back to you.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] LibreOffice Base Guide

2021-11-22 Thread Jean Weber
Robert,
Can we identify portions of the German book about Firebird that could
be translated and go into the English version? Or are the books too
different now?

Steve, FYI the English Base Guide started out as a translation of the
German Base Handbuch; it has been revised and portions rewritten since
then. But once or twice, several years ago, new or changed parts of
the German book were inserted into the English book, translated (by
various people, plus Google), and edited (often by me). I think it
worked well. But if the books have diverged too much, this may not be
practical.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Math Guide for 7.x?

2021-11-22 Thread Jean Weber
Thanks, Martin, Ilmari, Rafael. I agree the wording of the Math Guide
should be revised to match the GS chapter.

I am willing to take on the updating and revision of this book for LO
7.2. I will look into the topics Ilmari mentions, as well as what's in
the Release Notes.

Welcome. This list strips out attachments, so we don’t see which page or
typo you’re referring to. Also, you will probably find that some of the
info on the wiki about the team and its work is incomplete, contradictory,
or otherwise confusing. It’s been under revision for some time.

I agree, and I suggest 7.2. It would be nice to have a complete set of
guides branded for the same release. If Peter does Draw and Steve does Base
and someone (who?) does Math, we could have a full set for 7.2.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Hear ! Hear ! The Impresss Guide 7.2 just arrived !

2021-11-21 Thread Jean Weber
Fixed now. I also replaced all the 7.2 chapter files with ones having
the corrected title page logo.

BTW, I had to change the filename of Chapter 10 because "Saving" is a
banned word on the wiki. I used
IG7210-SlideShowsPrintEmailExportSave.odt / .pdf which is what that
chapter was named for v7.0.

I am now working on the print edition of the book.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Re: 7.2 Calc Guide

2021-11-20 Thread Jean Weber
Steve,
In the copyright statement, the URLs should be https: not http:
The back cover image should be behind the text box, not in front.
I did not find anything else.
I have amended the book ODT, regenerated the PDF, and uploaded them to
NextCloud.
IMO the book is ready for publication.

I have not changed the copyright URLs in the chapter files, but you or
Olivier may wish to do so.

[libreoffice-documentation] Impress 7.2 Guide chapter logos

Apologies for not noticing this before, but the title pages in each of

book have the old logo, without the word "Community".

Olivier, should these be changed to the new logo for the PDFs and
