Another possible step is the planned internal HMG Open Source events
highlighted here:

http://ossg.bcs.org/wp-content/uploads/Issue-2-Oct-11.pdf

I'll try and get along to the next DLUG meeting about this as a detailed
explanation to Civil Servants about what a LUG can offer maybe could be
incorporated intp one of these planned internal HMG events.

Cheers

Hi,

The cabinet office have just released an updated policy about OSS see
http://www.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/resource-library/open-source-procurement-
toolkit.

In short, they have strengthened the requirement to use OSS rather than
proprietary solutions, although they don't go as far as saying OSS is better.
What they do say is that if a proprietary solution is no better than an OSS
alternative, after taking into account TCO and other factors, then the OSS
solution must be selected.

At the link there is a toolkit of documents to help departments make the
decision.  Of particular interest is that the documents are provided in PDF
and ODF formats, but not doc or docx.

Now that is a step forward, if nothing else is :-)

Thanks to Andrew Morgan for mention of vobcopy.

Ubuntu users are probably used to the chore of reinstalling libdvdcss2
after each system upgrade. In case it is of wider utility, I offer below
a shell script that I have in my personal bin directory:

((begins))
#! /bin/bash

sudo wget --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list \
http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/$(lsb_release -cs).list \
&& sudo apt-get --quiet update && sudo apt-get --yes --quiet \
--allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring \
&& sudo apt-get --quiet update

sudo apt-get --yes install w64codecs libdvdcss2
((ends))

Regards to all,

CPKS
