It may be worth adding `H' to `-a' to make `-aH' in case there's lots of
hard links. The extra space needed by not preserving them could cause
problems. On the other hand, spotting the existing hard links takes
time and space itself.

incrementally), and 'future-proof' in that it will be easy to modify
should Clive decide to backup to a NAS or another computer.
When it's copying within the one machine, I think it hammers CPU a bit
more because it

Without -c it relies on length and modification time to decide if the
destination is out of date, IIRC. And even with -c I've had occasion
where it thinks nothing needs doing yet the SHA1 digests differ. So I
now use sha1sum(1) at the end to double-check.
