Well I think I've done that. I've pinged from the Home network side to eth1
(from a PC connected to the Home Router), which works, to eth0 (which is
connected to the AP), which doesn't and from the AP side (my phone) to eth0
which works, and to eth1, which doesn't.

I can ping 8.8.8.8 from the AP side too.

I vote for 2, especially because I can't make the original date.

For this option, are we saying it would be Tuesday 17th July or is that not
decided?

The PoS doesn't broadcast a DNS request, but sends it to its configured
DNS servers, none of which should be router-pi's Internet-side interface
and so it won't even see packet. If PoS had the router-pi's
captive-side IP address as a DNS server for some reason then it wouldn't
know how to get it to there without a route via Internet-side interface.

It's not a server that's pinged, but an interface. Often, they're the
same, but you have two of interest, plus loopback. You need to try
pinging both from both sides, so four pings.

So. In the short term; what are we going to do? There haven't been many
suggestions for alternative venues yet and the Broadway will undoubtedly be
packed and noisy.

I suggest that we take a poll on two alternatives (short term solution):

1. Cancel this months meeting.

2. Postpone this months meeting until after the Football is finished (the
Final is on the 15th).

If we chose Number 2., there aren't any other upcoming events that might
impact the pub availability after the 15th. (There are some, but the Tour de
France and the Golf Open shouldn't fill the place :-)

Taken from the Debian Forum

After all that it was a *bug in TiMidity of all things. The new version
takes control of the sound chip before PulseAudio can, effectively
locking it out. So I used "systemctl stop timidity" followed by
"pulseaudio -k" and wouldn't you know it? Fully restored sound. I'd
advise everyone else to try the same to see if you're being affected by
this too.

I simply deleted Timidity and my sound started working

Yes. I've also found quite a few postings about it on the web. I agree with
what you say about trying to work on my Webserver / Router, but I have my
Mother down next week and i was hoping to deploy this week.

I understand that DNS Servers have nothing to do with routes in themselves,
but my concern wsa that if I got my routing tables wrong then my server could
respond to a DNS Request from the PoS equipment instead of the ISP defined
Routers.

Presumably, if I've got the setup right, I shouldn't be able to ping the
server from the Internet side of eth1 (eg my PC), only the AP side (eg my
phone)?

DNS servers don't dish up routes, and you're right, your DNS server will
elect to only listen on the interface where there's incoming requests
from the paying public.

I can't connect to it again, even though the Pi hasn't been connected since
yesterday. I was connecting OK earlier today. So it's maybe nothing to do
with the Pi.

> And did Chrome still fail soon after that?

Yes. and for the rest of the afternoon until I gave up and shut down.

> That would be a different DNS server, route, etc.

So the DNS Server used by Android perhaps kept its integrity for longer?

I'll have another look at the system and see if the routes that I've set up
could cause any problems. I have NAT on eth1, so presumably a machine on the
Internet side of the Pi Router would not inadvertently pick up the route from
my DNS server when I have set it up. In short, my DNS server should only be
available to the phones, tablets, etc that connect through our WiFi AP. Do
you agree.

About fifteen minutes ago I couldn't open that URL from home, and dig(1)

Interesting that the primary reason is the pub being busy and not people
not attending because they want to watch the match ;-) Having little
interest in football that makes sense to me though. Noting other
comments, it doesn't have to be a permanent change... I'll go back to
lurking now...

Oh, apart form putting an open invite to the Portsmouth LUG meets if you
are in the area on the third Saturday of the month. We are luck enough
to have a meeting room next to a bar, opposite a train station, so we
have space for talks (when I can find speakers) and old fashioned
bring-a-box meets (mainly laptops, Raspberry Pis, etc.)... and
sandwiches. I post notifications to Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire as we
have regulars from those areas, but I've left Dorset as being too far.
