Fair comment, but Debian do document this in the release notes. I would
urge anyone upgrading to Squeeze to read the release notes (yeah, I know).

I'd never consider upgrading without following the release notes, but
having read through them again I still can't see this mentioned - out of
interest where is it?

I'm not knocking Debian - the reason I like it is the slow release cycle
and emphasis on robustness. I use it on four boxes, and always start
with the least important one first and work up from there. In practice,
every upgrade takes me months to get everything back to where it was,
even with Debian. There was discussion a few months back on Arch Linux -
rolling release did seem like quite a good idea. At least with that you
reduce the chance of having dozens of things all broke at once after a
dist upgrade.

Cheers

Tim

I owe you an apology, Tim, sorry. It's mentioned here
http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/amd64/release-notes/ch-whats-new.en.html#nonfree-firmware,
but it doesn't explicitly state that the appropriate packages need to be
installed. At work, we have our own upgrade notes, derived from the
release notes and amended with our experience, and it is those notes that
specifically state that the firmware packages may need to be installed.

Have you tried disabling all hardware acceleration, just to see if that
improves things in the short term? See option NoAccel in r128(4).

I found various complaints about previously working R128-driven cards
stopping working after upgrades, but nothing coherent that looked like
it would help.

Had tried NoAccel, and various other possible options without success.

Morning googling often seems to be better than end-of-day searching -

Solution turned out to be

apt-get firmware-linux-nonfree
Xorg -configure
Copied over new xorg.conf to /etc/X11
Edited Driver r128 to Driver ati

It's a pity this upgrade broke a pretty standard driver.

Thanks for your help!
