I can't be the only person who's found this to be a limitation, right? It would be very useful to sort by actual sender, not just to group all the michael@'s together, then all the paul@'s, etc. I'm just a user looking for a workaround, not a protocol architect, but it looks like the RFC also specifies that SORT is extensible, so maybe the most correct, if not the easiest, solution would be to define a new sort key such as DOMAIN.

This is the RFC 5256 compliant behavior. From is sorted on addr-mailbox. If those are equal: If two or more messages exactly match according to the sorting criteria, these messages are sorted according to the order in which they appear in the mailbox. In other words, there is an implicit sort criterion of "sequence number". RFC 5256, Section 3. michael
IMAP From sort uses only local-part
As far as I can tell, when I ask Dovecot to sort an IMAP mailbox by the From address, it ignores the part of the address after the '@'. So, for instance, mails from i...@abc.org, i...@xyz.org, and i...@ghi.org are all mingled together in arrival order. Is there a way to change this? Thanks!
