Re: [DQSD-Users] Fix for XP SP2 Problem

2004-11-18 Thread Kim Gräsman
Monty and all,

I was confused, there. I typed 'calendar', but I was thinking of the
help window. That's another dead feature, IIRC. The problem with that
is, the majority of code runs inside explorer.exe, so the registry fix
takes care of that, but the help window and some popup windows run
inside iexplore.exe unconditionally. So you would have to apply the
registry hack to iexplore.exe as well, and that doesn't feel so good.

Neither of the searches with popup windows work, as far as I can tell,
because of the iexplore.exe issue. I've tried adding a mark-of-the-web,
but either I didn't do it right, or it just didn't work.

Part of the problem with popup windows is that they all use
convertStylesToInline, where they read the main document's stylesheet -
that's apparently ubiquitously disallowed in SP2. I tried omitting the
stylesheet copying, but then there was some other problem, etc, ad sleepium.

Kim
P.S. Should we move this over to the dev list? D.S.

I'd just want assurance that any SP2 "fix" specifically resolved dqsd issues and did
not generally disable SP2's active content protection or any other SP2 functionality.

IMHO, we ought to have something SP2-compatible first.

I don't think it does us any good to push out a new version when our
primary 'new' audience still can't use it.

I wish I could help more on this one because I'd really like to see a
complete solution. But Don't remember that there is an option to launch the
calendar with double-click (not just right-click).

I agree with this too. I don't believe there's any prospect of a 'fix' for
XP2 at any time soon with the current approach. The biggest difficulty is
that people are seeing lots of different problems with a matching variety
of experiences with the 'solutions'.

I generally click on the yellow bar once a day and don't have any other
problems. I tried yesterday's 'Mark Of The Web' and it just stopped DQSD
reloading altogether (I might have some old or hacked-about search.htm)
which was surprising to me.

Personally, I think we should release a new build of DQSD, without any XP2
nasty registry hacks, but with all the minor bugfixes which have gone in
since the last one.

Losing the calendar to avoid clicking on the yellow warning once a day
would seem to be a loss-of-baby-with-bathwater incident.

Thats kind of a dilemma. I had committed the recent mod to search.htm the
other day. We can:

1. Wait for a workaround for the calendar issue (has anyone tried the comx
or racetv searches which spawn an extra window to see if these searches
function with the change??) Kim I think I remember you had tried them
before, and they were ok.. I dont have those searches in place yet since
I am rebuilding my machine.

2. Deploy with the current change for SP2 and with a calendar that doesn't
work.

3. Back out the recent change and deploy a release which still has the sp2
issues, and re-deploy later if an sp2 workaround surfaces.

4. remove the calendar and deploy with the current sp2 (assuming the
calendar is the only sp2 issue). I dont know how hard this would be.. I
assume all the cal code can be left in but the binding to right-click
could be removed.

Does anyone have any ideas on the calendar issue? I do use the calendar
and would hate to see it go.. but it is probably the hanging point to a
new release..

My order of preference would be:
3,1,4,2

My $.02 FWIW..

Monty

Yes, I believe so too. I've added a pretty thorough ReadMe.txt to the src
directory, so at least it's documented.
I wouldn't mind building a new release, but I always pictured we should have
an XP SP2-compatible package in place first.
Maybe we should save that for later?

Opinions? What's more important - new release or new release working with
SP2?

Hi fellow DQSDers,

I already had

in on line 155 of search.htm v. 1.187

Since I'm not running XP I can't test this but does
Lee's changes work better that the line I had put in
there already?

Also, Kim - I think you, Glenn, and David are the only

2004-11-18 Thread Kim Gräsman
Hey all,

I think mark-of-the-web is probably a good thing, if it stops the first
popup blocker problem.

The issue with the calendar is something else, I believe it's got something
to do with writing stylesheets dynamically.

It'd be great if we could work around these problems, so we can get a new
release out the door, but I'm swamped with work, and severely lacking
competence, so I'm counting on the rest of you.

FWIW, the registry fix mentioned at dqsd.net must be applied not only to
Explorer.exe, but also to IExplore.exe (which is a bit scary), or the
calendar and other popup windows won't work.

Cheers,
Kim
