[DQSD-Users] Updated COMX.XML file

2007-05-15 Thread brian

Hi all!

   I've added the xkcd (www.xkcd.com) and Dinosaur Comics (www.qwantz.com) comics to the COMX.XML file. This should be a drop-in
replacement for the existing comx.xml file.

   If somebody with commit access could verify and submit my changes, it would
be greatly appreciated.   Thanks!!

[DQSD-Users] The (errant) history of DQSD

2007-03-13 Thread Brian Dunworth
Hi all...

I hope somebody has a quick easy answer to this.

I just got a new machine at work (yay!) and set about getting everything
installed/configured/setup/etc. (including, of course, DQSD).

I successfully transferred over my settings files and history file from the old
machine to the new, and everything was (nearly) fine... except, on this
machine, I was getting that annoying 'security warning' when booting up the
machine, and had to click through that nonsense before DQSD would actually
start.

So, I set out to fix this problem... and, in researching, found Monty's post
about simply installing the 4.0 release, which does something different and
works around this error. (I had been running 3.1.9.2 and uninstalled that and
installed 4.0 RC3).

I was still getting those 'security' warnings, even with the 4.0 RC3 release,
so I did the registry hack to resolve it, and that seems to have done the
trick.

Now the issue is with the history -- at first I thought it hadn't picked it up,
but it has... it's just that the up/down arrows (or Ctrl-P/Ctrl-N) do not work
to scroll through the history. As you might imagine, that significantly
impacts the usefulness of the application! In the short term, I figured I
could just load up my old history file in notepad, and cut/paste stuff into
DQSD until I figured out the Up/Down not working -- no, Ctrl-V doesn't paste
into the entry box, either. I basically have to type out whatever
search/function I want to use, every time I want to use it. The coce seems to
be working correctly -- in that what I type is being appended to the
history.txt file, so I think it's just an issue with the keystrokes. But what?

Any help would be most appreciated!

(As a side note -- why did I upgrade to 4.0 to fix the 'security' thing, when
it didn't fix it anyway and I still had to do the registry hack? I could have
done that under 3.1.9.2 and not lost all the rest of this functionality!)

[DQSD-Users] comx.xml : broken again, change needed (enclosed)

2006-10-12 Thread brian
I noticed a couple days ago that the Joy of Tech cartoon was no longer
appearing in my comx line in DQSD -- instead, I'd get another small
graphic file.

I took a look at the web page, then took a look at the comx.xml file. I
guess, when this search was written, the Joy of Tech comic was the only
(or at least the first) referenced image in the 'joyimages' directory on
that web page. By slightly changing the regex used to find the graphic
url within the page, functionality can be restored:

--[original]--
 case joyoftech:
   var sUrl=http://www.geekculture.com/joyoftech/index.html;;
   var xmlHttp = new ActiveXObject(Microsoft.XmlHttp);
   xmlHttp.open(GET, sUrl, false);
   xmlHttp.send();

   //get the response content from the remote site
   var sBody = xmlHttp.responseText;

   // what I'm looking for
   //img src=joyimages/555.png height=431 width=485 border=0
   var pattern = /joyimages\/\S+.[jpg|png|gif]/ig;
   var result = sBody.match(pattern)[0];
   var imgurl = http://www.geekculture.com/joyoftech/+result;
 break;
--

to retrieve the correct image, just change:

   var pattern = /joyimages\/\S+.[jpg|png|gif]/ig;

to:

   var pattern = /joyimages\/\S+.[jpg|png|gif] alt=The Joy/ig;

[DQSD-Users] COMX.XML - missing Joy of Tech User Friendly (again)

2006-03-25 Thread Brian

Hi all...

   I (finally) got around to refreshing things on the computer... Installed
the new(er) mwd.xml to get the popup feature (nice!) and the newest comx.xml
to get the editorial cartoons and to get Calvin and Hobbes working again --
unfortunately, it looks like somewhere along the chain, Joy of Tech and User
Friendly got dropped (again) from the xml file. Is it possible to get those
back in the lineup?

Hi Paul,

 I haven't made any changes to defaults of my dqsd
 installation, so if I simply enter a search key and
 press enter, I should get a browser window with
 Google search results for that key--and that's
 gererally what happens; however recently, entering
 some keys get me to a search engine at
 allrecipes.com instead. Entering the same keys in
 other deskbars still gets me to Google, so it
 doesn't seem to be a general Browser hijack. Is
 there a DQSD-specific out there?

To my knowledge there is no hijacker for DQSD.

However, some of the shortcut keys may seem like they are hijacking
the search. The allrecipes search is ar - so if your search
includes those two characters, the state abbreviation for Arkansas,
for example, then you'll have issues.

There have been a couple of people complaining about their default
search changing unexpectedly in the most recent release. Thoguh I
have no idea how this could happen, the 'fix' is to check both your
localprefs.js and preferences.js to ensure that the defaultsearch
is still gg or whatever you expect/desire it to be, like so:

defaultsearch=gg;

Changing this line will require a reload (!) of DQSD.

Hi Shawn...

I did as you said - deleted comx.xml completely rebooted. DQSD loaded
fine, and (as expected) querying 'comx /peanuts' (or whatever) directly
produces a google page, without the intervening error messages about invalid
handles in search.htm.

All the other (well, I didn't verify *all* of them) searches in the folder
seem to be working fine, both before and after this latest experiment.

Try deleting comx.xml completely, reboot, and let me know if DQSD

[DQSD-Users] D*mmit!

2005-03-10 Thread Brian
:sigh:

Well, I tried reverting to several other versions, including the newer one
you posted this week (with the warning). It seems NONE of them work any
more on my machine.  :(

...and I *swear* I did nothing before other than installing the new comx.xml
file.  Grrr...

Well, I didn't check it into CVS after all, but you can always go back and
get a working version in CVS from here:
http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/*checkout*/dqsd/dqsd/searches/comx.xml
http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/dqsd/dqsd/searches/comx.xml?rev=1.25v
iew=log

I'll see what I can do about reproducing and fixing the error before I check
anything in.

I'm still trying to get King Features comics (like Baby Blues) to work. They
use JavaScript and the document referrer to deliver the comic image after
the page loads. Anyone got any ideas how to make this work?

 Instead of any comics, I get two error boxes, both indicating
 the same message, followed by a google search for the entire
 comx /etc /etc line I had entered into DQSD.
 ...and it no longer functions for any comic, singly or in groups.

[DQSD-Users] Error message after booting

2004-05-09 Thread Brian
Every time I boot my computer, I get the following dialog as DQSD is
initializing:

Line:   306
Char:   2
Error:  'startupCommands' is undefined
Code:   0
URL:file://C:\Program Files\Quick Search
Deskbar\search.htm

Continue running scripts on this page?
[Yes]   [No]

(...or something pretty close to that -- I'm getting older all the time, and
my memory may be beginning to fail...)

Now, I've loaded up the specified file and examined it -- and I find no
trace of the word 'startupCommands' in that file, on line 306 or any other.

So, umm..  ??  what next?

Hi Brian,

Try adding

var startupCommands = new String();

to your localprefs.js

and see if it goes away.

  Calvin and Hobbes works now, thanks - but I also saw
  that Doonesbury is mis-spelled too :)

 Cool .. got it fixed..

  Also you could use:

  if( nullArgs(comx, q) )
  return false;

  instead of:

   if( q == ? ){
  qsfind(comx /function);
  return false;
   }
   if( q ==  ){
  qsfind(comx /function);
  return false;
   }

 I didnt like the nullArgs in this case because it opens the link page.
I
 just wanted to display the help window.. The comics come from a couple of
 different pages.. I did at least combine the two tests to a single one..

  Also I don't like the IE image toolbar popping up over
  my comic so you could add:

  META HTTP-EQUIV=imagetoolbar CONTENT=no

 Hmm I tried putting this in the popup html, but it crashes explorer!...
 Maybe I am doing something wrong...

  And finally since I got my other wish for Garfield :)
  how about displaying multiple comics on one page - I
  find myself having to keep typing in the following
  sequence to read all my comics:

 Oh man... Its a nice idea but I will probably leave this for someone with
 better skills than mine.. I am pushing my learning limits already!..
 heehee Maybe after a break I could try to tackle it..

 Thanks for the feedback!..

 right.. The Calvin and Hobbes comic being served up is from 1993. The
 reason no comic displayed today is that this is a leap year, and there was
 no Feb 29 in 1993.

 Ah.. Born Loser is a weekly comic.. Comics have to be daily for their pic
 to be fetched..

 I removed a few comics from the search for this reason..

 I added Calvin and Hobbs. and removed some programming sillyness.

 Attached is the modified search..., it should be good for Sundays' comics
as
 well..

  comx /born returns The Born Loser. I didn't know which one it would

[DQSD-Users] Search bar is causing system to hang

2003-11-20 Thread Brian Phelps
I wrote about this problem last week and think I missed the answer. The search bar is causing my system to hang upon booting. The task bar remains frozen as Dave's search bar attempts to load. This happens even after I've unintalled it and rebooted. I'm really at a loss as to what to do. I've loved the tool but now it's crippling my system. I can't get the thing off. Help, anyone? Dave?

Thanks.

The search bar is causing my XP Pro system to hang after booting. The
task bar becomes frozen as the Search bar won't complete loading. I had
to go into Safe Mode and uninstall the search bar so I could use
Windows. I've heard some talk of problems that are being worked on. I
really love the search bar and would like to continue to use it. Is
there any debugging or other work I can do on my end to help resolve
these problems?

[DQSD-Users] New Family History Searches

2003-01-30 Thread Brian Phelps
Here are three simple scripts for finding your ancestors on Ancestry.com,
FamilySearch.org, and Genealogy.com. I'm working on a more sophisticated
script for www.familysearch.org, but they have a number of fields and I
could use some help setting up the query correctly and parsing input. A
rough version of this script is attached as fsadv.xml.
