Maybe this is something I should know how to do myself, but is
there
way to enter a long URL in DSQD and have it make a short URL from
tinyURL.com? I mean without having to go to there web site?

Tinyurl www.xx.com will do it, producing a tinyurl
equivalent for www.xx.com But it does it by taking you
to
 the tinyurl site.

Personally I never use this, and prefer to add the tinyurl button to
the IE links toolbar. Clicking on it while within any page will
produce the tinyurl equivalent for that page. See instructions for
 doing this at http://tinyurl.com/.

When I do that and restart DQSD, all subsequent

Are you sure you haven't changed your default search or modified any

I just 'clean' installed DQSD (deleted the Quick Search Deskbar
directory on both before isntalling) on W2K Server and a W2K3 Server
and did not experience that situation on either system.

Scan through localprefs.js for a line that looks something like
this:
   defaultsearch=ggd;

 Change it to:
   defaultsearch=gg;

That was it, thanks very much. All fixed now.

 Hello everyone,

As you may have noticed, we have recently released two betas of DQSD

minor release, feature-wise, but we've fixed a fair number of
issues,
and added a year's worth of new searches.

I installed 3.1.9 today. Following installing and rebooting, whenever
I use the DQSD toolbar,
http://reliableanswers.com/x/dqsd/ggd-discover.asp comes up. It says

Key: 339156899

Add the following line to your LocalPrefs.js file:
  ggd_googleKey = '339156899';

When I do that and restart DQSD, all subsequent searches are in Google

What am I doing wrong?

Well, if they did, I assume they would fail all the time, not just
randomly. I have them both starting from the Startup folder, and my
guess is that there may be some sort of a timing issue--depending on
when in the sequence they starts, they may or may not have the
problem.

Best of luck with it, anyway.

I did this and it fixed the problem. However, it breaks two
programs
 here:

 1. I run a little background program called QuickReply
(http://www.erstenware.com/?qr2). It runs as an icon in the
System Tray as a process. After making the fix you
recmmended, I can see the process running in Task Manager,
but there's no icon in the System tray, and I can't access it.

 2. I also run Desktop Sidebar
 (http://www.desktopsidebar.com/index.html). One of its
features is that it lets me put a Media Player control bar in
it. I can then start Windows Media Player (for example,
playing a radio station) and close it; the station continues
to play, and I can control it from the Desktop Sidebar. After
making your fix, when I close Media Player, the sound stream
stops and the sidebar control doesn't work.

I have no idea why this registry change had these two
effects, but it seems to be the case. I observed that
behavior in two spearate boots after applying the change. I
then removed the change and both problems went away.

Number 2 is a minor inconvenience that I could live with, but
I need the QuickReply program. Any thoughts on either or both
 of these?

Yes, kind-of. We've been experimenting with different solutions to

So, if you can live with a less secure explorer.exe, you can make
the following modifications to your registry:

 Add a DWORD value to

can probably live with that. I think this is currently the only

You need to place them into the searches folder, which *usually*

If you intend to 'keep up to date' with the latest and greatest

After you've made any configuration changes - such as editing the
localaliases.txt file or adding/removing searches from either the

order to make your changes active. This is easily done by typing a

RE: [DQSD-Users] Amazon's A9 search

Amazon's new search is based on Google. To web search, it adds

 Search Inside The Book

 adjustable columns, even outside IE

 search history, if you login

I'm going to try it as my default search for awhile. There's
also an A9 toolbar, similar to Google's toolbar, but it
requires IE and an Amazon.com account.

Are these on Amazon's site? I can't find either one. Can you point me
to the right places? Thanks.

Never mind. It's a separate site, a9.com, as I finally figured out for
myself.

[DQSD-Users] Error Message

2004-02-08 Thread Ken Blake
I'm using version 3.1.8.0. Often, but not always, when I type a
search, I get the message

Failed to parse on-line version information. Error message: the
system can not locate the object specified.

Can someone tell me what's wrong and how to fix it?

This is an online version check to see if an update is available..
It is failing because the website to which it is connecting hasn't
 received the latest updates..

To turn the auto-check off, set checkForUpdate = false in
 your localprefs.js file.

Thanks very much. If it's not doing any harm and it's only a matter of
a short time before the site gets the updtaes, I think I'd just as
soon leave it alone, so I don't have to remember to turn it back on
again later.

 Example:

/* Check web for an updated version each time the toolbar is
 started */ checkForUpdate = true; checkForUpdateDelay =
1; // millisecond delay after first search

 Hi Ken,

  Have not installed 3.1.8 yet.

Is 3.1.8 released, or is it just a beta version?

It's just a beta, so far. We've found a couple of bugs in it,
of which most are fixed, and I hope we'll find the time to
drop another beta build before christmas, and then build a
 final version after christmas.

Thanks very much. If the final version will be out in a few weeks,
I'll wait then. Will you announce it here when it's ready?
