Re: [DQSD-Users] Popup Information Bar + script error

2007-02-08 Thread Monty Scroggins
The secutiry banner and warnings are to be expected if you had not done
the tweaks to disable the security mechanism. The script error is
something else.. Probably the toolbar isnt properly registered in the
system. In the past the way to fix this is to *uninstall* the toolbar
completely (sometimes people rename the Quick Search Deskbar
directory) and re-install it.. do not try to merely re-install over the
top of an existing installation.

-however-

The 4.0 releases contain a re-design of how the toolbar operates inside
of windows.The re-design allows the toolbar to operate without the
security warnings and popups. Evidently a few of the searches use some
components that windows will complain about if the user is not an
administrator. Many of us have used the re-designed version for some
time with no problems. I would recommend moving to the 4.0 package..

Hope this helps,

Monty

 Whenever I start my PC with the DQSD taskbar in the list of
 startup programs,

 a. a message pops up asking: Did you notice the Information Bar?
 etc. I click on Yes to get rid of this.
 b. the searchbar has text in it telling me that active content
 won't be shown for this file (?) ...
 c. a right click into the bar brings up another dialog asking me
 whether to allow active content
 d. if I click yes a security dialog pops up asking if I was sure
 ... and closes after clicking on YES

 Problem 2:
 Now I'm notified about a script error in line 31 of
 C:\Programs\Quick Search Deskbar\search.htm

 My browser is the IE6-based Maxthon, with popups blocked. So this may
 be the expected behaviour. Is there a way to let the search bar start
 each time without asking and blocking everything else at the same
 time? Should I enter something for a secure site? But there's no site
 address that I would know of!

 What can I do in order to get rid of the security warnings and the error ?

 Thanks

Re: [DQSD-Users] Calendar and Local Events

2007-01-15 Thread Monty Scroggins
I had added this feature in some time back.. the color tag is optional,
but if included in the event XML it is used.. Here is an example -

event name=Birthday type=public_holiday color=red
  date day= 15 month=1 year=2007/
/event

Monty

Charlie Russel wrote:
 As I added some calendar events to my local events file, I discovered a
 bit of ugliness in the theme_vista.css file, which I'm working to
 resolve. But it also brought up the question of how this all works. As
 it currently stands, everything in the various calendar files
 (calendar.country.xml) is listed as a public_holiday. Which is fine.
 And if I add in a second or third set of holidays, by adding them to
 localevents.xml, then they work just fine(well, after I fixed the theme
 file). But what if I want to add additional events, and have them colour
 coded based on the type of event. So, for example, I might want to add
 my wife's birthday to that local events file, and have the xml list it
 as type birthday. Can I then get it to display in a different colour
 based on the xml type? And if so, how to do it?

 Charlie.

2006-12-14 Thread Monty Scroggins
It looks like it is working.. I can see a cosmetic thing or two but
the page still works.. The webpage should update from the repository

Glenn Carr wrote:
 Michael,

 Monty had created a page out on the dqsd.net site to display all the current
 searches, but I think it no longer works due to a switch in our source code
 control system (http://www.dqsd.net/tools/dqsdtoc/searchtoc.pl).  We probably
 need to fix that. Monty, does that display new searches automatically?

 Anyway, there may be another way that I'm not aware of, but here is how to
 download and install new/updated searches:

 - Go to the searches directory of the code repository on SF:
 http://tinyurl.com/w5s6h
 (http://dqsd.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/dqsd/trunk/dqsd/searches/?sortby=date#dirlist)

 - Click on the search .xml file link, which will take you to the revision
 history page for the file.

 - Right-click on the (download) link and save the file your
 %PROGRAMFILES%\Quick Search Deskbar\searches directory.

 - Reload your searchbar by entering ! and then Enter.

 This should work in most cases. Every once in a while a search file will
 require a change to some of the core files, in which case you would need to
 download that core file as well. Usually, that's not the case though.

 Hope that helps,
 Glenn

 Subject: [DQSD-Users] Updates between versions?

 Hi all,

 A few weeks ago, I noticed that some standard DQSD searches (eg USPS
 trackng info) were not working, and I knew that someone had posted an update
 to the new URL. But I didn't know how to get the new search installed. I
 solved this by installing the 4.0 version, but could someone on this list
 explain how to install the interim updates (presumably from the Sourceforge
 site) without waiting for a new version that includes them? Or is this
 answered somewhere online?

 Thanks,
 Michael

Not yet.

There have been several attempts to do this but they've thus far been
fruitless. DQSD uses a couple objects to provide advanced functionality
that would not work directly within a browser without having been
installed.

Yeah I meant more that it could take a switch or something to search th
edisabled searches on demand.. something like "qsfind search

It is true that parsing them by default would certainly defeat the
purpose of having disabled searches..

I haven't looked into details, but if the rationale for disabling searches
is to avoid parsing them, having qsfind parse disable searches seems a
little counter-productive...

Then again, I don't have any searches disabled, so I've never felt the pain.

[DQSD-Users] qsfind

2006-08-24 Thread Monty Scroggins
It would be nice if qsfind could search disables searches as well as

I just lived this scenario -
I have all but a few searches disabled via qsfreq..
I want to enable a search but I cant remember exactly what the name
is, so I can use qsfreq to enable it.. (metacritic in this case)
I have no recourse but to search out the search name via dqsd.net or
dig around in the searches directory.

If qsfind could locate the search string in the disbled searches, I
could easily enable it..

Thoughts?

[DQSD-Users] nfl schedule search added

2006-08-20 Thread Monty Scroggins
I created a search to fetch the NFL schedule for the current week
adjusted by timezone much like the racetv search did...

It will fetch week1 until the season starts September 7th, Then it will
fetch the current weeks' schedule.

Note - The NFL considers Monday Night Football to be part of the prior
weeks' schedule

Switches:
US (default) /us
Central Timezone /central
Mountain Timezone /mountain
Pacific Timezone /pacific

Notes:
All the timezone switches can be abbreviated.
All times are US Eastern by default.
The /popup switch will open in a popup window.
Examples:
nfltv (US Eastern Schedule)
nfltv /pac (US Pacific Schedule)
nfltv /cen (US Central Schedule)
nfltv /cen /popup (US Central Schedule in a popup window)

I checked the search into CVS

 Hi all,

 Could I request a resend of the gg.xml with the /maps switch?

 (As mentioned in following:

 Can't seem to find it on CVS..

[DQSD-Users] qsfreq mod

2006-08-19 Thread Monty Scroggins
I added a function to qsfreq.xml to allow re-enabling of individual
searches. It is called via the '/add' switch. If a search is disabled,
you simply re-enable it with 'qsfreq /add searchname' Multiple
searches can be specified at a time. 'qsfreq /add searchname
searchname searchname'...

I checked the search in to CVS..

Usage:

qsfreq

[no switches]- Display the search frequency data.
/clear- Clear the search frequency log.
/disable_unused- Disable all searches not recorded in the
frequency log.
/enable_all- Re-enable all previously disabled searches.
/add- Re-enable specific searches.

Examples:
qsfreq /clear

qsfreq /disable_unused
qsfreq /enable_all
qsfreq qsfreq /add note alarm racetv comx imdb

Hey Brent..

I hear ya.. I worried about that.. I use Firefox exclusively...I
just thought it might be a little quicker to display the comics with a
trimmed down featureless window (since IE is already running via the OS).

When you say make it optional, do you mean an option on the command
line? or do you mean to set a variable in a config somewhere?

I am happy to implement such a thing..

I added the /nopopup switch that can be used to tell dqsd to write to a
file and open in the default browser.

Please give it a go..

2006-03-26 Thread Monty Scroggins

It sounds like it is running an old comx.xml, or you have the URL
cached. This behavior is what you will get when the pattern matching
fails to find the string in the destination website.. (which is what
was happening after forbetter was removed from comics.com)..

After you get the blank window, do a view source on the page and see
what the url is for the image.. I suspect it might be trying to go to
comics.com..

Maybe it has something to do with comics pulled from ucomics.com. Try
viewing 'Dick Tracy' using both of the following methods to see if they
work:

comx /dicktracy
or
comx /dicktracy /nopopup

If neither work, try clearing your browser cache and try again.

I had to go back 9 versions to find any reference to these two comics..
It appears they have not been part of the CVS version of comx for 15
months or so.. anyway I pasted the code in for them... give this one
a try .. If it is ok I will check it in..

machine a few years ago I have not looked into performance gains by

I know we can use the script generator
http://www.master-minds.net/cgi-bin/disablesearches.cgi
to disable scripts, and maybe that's enough but ideally would it not
good to have something more fluid?
Yeah there has long been a need to have some kind of mechanism of
disabling searches that arent needed.. The performance gains of not
loading 300+ searches is pretty noticeable..My script renaming
utility was meant only as a crude workaround..

A problem exists, in that all of the searches have to be parsed
initially to be even available on the menu for enabling or disabling..
The search code doesnt have to be loaded to memory but the xml would
still have to be parsed on startup... So I guess if there was some sort
of on-the-fly enabling and disabling of searches, the startup time would
still be kind of slow.. Memory would be gained though...

Maybe there could be a built in mechanism that would allow the user to
create a snapshot of the searches which are available and unavailable
and store the data to a file that could be loaded at dqsd startup before
any search xml files are parsed. The file would control which searches
are loaded, and could contain enough information about *all* the
searches that the help menu items could still be created without parsing
all the xml files. This would speed the startup since all the searches
wouldnt have to be parsed anymore. The user would only have to go
through all the searches once to get the configuration set.

Good Idea?  Bad Idea?

Monty

Hi Tom,

I've fixed the search from the copy you posted.

There were a couple of problems:

- parseArgsEx expects the value argument to be first, before all switch
arguments, so crit /music Tom Waits would search the music category for an
empty string, since there's nothing between crit and /music.

- The URL was wrong -- they seem to have moved the post target from
search.metacritic.com/ to www.metacritic.com/

I cleaned up the form to contain as little as possible, while I was at it.

Will commit to CVS as soon as possible.

Cheers,

The search for the metacritic site has been broken for some
time. I attach an updated search which is NOT working
however. I cannot figure out why. If anyone has the time i
would appreciate some other eyes having a look.

Thanks, Tom.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Comx request

2005-09-11 Thread Monty Scroggins
Hmmm I took a peek at this one.. There is a problem in that the comic
image is served up through a content management system. If I extract
the URL of the image and attempt to fetch it directly, there is an error
generated - no referer. In other words, it looks to me that the comic
will only be served up via the nwsource.com site.. I could be
mis-interpreting what is going on, and someone else might have an idea
on how to work around it..

[DQSD-Users] search history being lost

2005-08-11 Thread Monty Scroggins

Tip -

I noticed my DQSD history was disappearing from time to time.. After
some digging I noticed the toolbar is one of the applications
automatically cleaned by the program Window Washer..

If anyone uses this program and doesn't want the search history erased,
you can disable the cleaning of DQSD in the preferences..

the
gray bar underneath. The deskbar contains a white window with black
text
when active. I have not modified the standard XP taskbar.

Michael,
If the jpg's are small could you zip them together, rename the zip to
.txt and attach the file to a post? I didn't know jpg's weren't
allowed on the list.. I know zip's aren't ... renaming the file should
do the trick..

Here is my localprefs.js file, in case that is affecting it. Setting the
banner width to 0, perhaps?
hmm I pasted your settings into mine and it had no ill effects...
Maybe the jpg's will offer some kind of clue..

Thanks

Hmm I haven't witnessed this..
There is something awry with the CSS of your install maybe.. Have you
made any over-riding css definitions in localsearch.css? This is
suspicious too if you are seeing some grey banners around the toolbar.
Can you check your localsearch.css file and see if it has anything other
than comments in it? If so, try renaming it and enter '!' in the
toolbar to reload it.. The blue theme is different than the olive and
silver ones in that it sets the text color to #fcfcfc (white) instead of
black. If you are seeing black on blue, somehow the blue scheme is not
being utilized completely. The theme.css should have entries which
look like this -

body
{
background: #BBBDCD url(xptoolbar1_blue.bmp) repeat-x fixed top;
}
.clock
{
background: transparent repeat-x fixed bottom;
color: #fcfcfc;
font-weight: bold;
border-width:0px;
padding-top:9px;
padding-left:4px;
padding-right:4px;
padding-bottom:5px;
}
Theme.css should also be the same size as theme_blue.css.. Can you
check this?

wow I dont think I have ever even looked at this htm file.. I have no

  Download and run dqsd.exe as usual.

 Add New Toolbar...
  When it prompts you for a folder, type in the following URL: http://notesbydave.com/toolbar/install.htm
(be sure not to copy in any spaces at the beginning or the end)
  The Quick Search bar should appear.

shouldn't the URL in step 3 be "file://c:\Program Files\Quick Search

Paul it is blocking activeX content on the page being executed. Its a
*webpage*. Clicking allow activeX content allows it for *that* webpage.
When another webpage is initiated (like racetv for example) you will get
another warning bar.

Monty

 I *do* trust you, intentions-wise; but I'd feel more comfortable in the
 correctness
 department if you could site some authority or other evidence to support
 that by
 clicking allow active content I'm issuing page-specific, and not global,
 permission.

 function with the change??) Kim I think I remember you had tried them
 before, and they were ok.. I dont have those searches in place yet
 since I am rebuilding my machine.
Neither of the searches with popup windows work, as far as I can tell,
because of the iexplore.exe issue. I've tried adding a
mark-of-the-web, but either I didn't do it right, or it just didn't work.

Part of the problem with popup windows is that they all use
convertStylesToInline, where they read the main document's stylesheet
- that's apparently ubiquitously disallowed in SP2. I tried omitting
the stylesheet copying, but then there was some other problem, etc, ad
sleepium.

RE: [DQSD-Users] Fix for XP SP2 Problem

2004-11-18 Thread Monty Scroggins

 Opinions? What's more important - new release or new release working with
 SP2?

 Kim

Thats kind of a dilemma. I had committed the recent mod to search.htm the
other day.  We can:

1. Wait for a workaround for the calendar issue (has anyone tried the comx
or racetv searches which spawn an extra window to see if these searches
function with the change??) Kim I think I remember you had tried them
before, and they were ok.. I dont have those searches in place yet since
I am rebuilding my machine.

2. Deploy with the current change for SP2 and with a calendar that doesn't
work.

3. Back out the recent change and deploy a release which still has the sp2
issues, and re-deploy later if an sp2 workaround surfaces.

4. remove the calendar and deploy with the current sp2 (assuming the
calendar is the only sp2 issue). I dont know how hard this would be.. I
assume all the cal code can be left in but the binding to right-click
could be removed.

Does anyone have any ideas on the calendar issue? I do use the calendar
and would hate to see it go.. but it is probably the hanging point to a
new release..

My order of preference would be:
3,1,4,2

My $.02 FWIW..

I stumbled across DQSD a few evenings ago and decided to give it a try.

  I immediately noticed that it had a problem with running under Windows
XP SP2. It looks to me like you are using local active content in a web
browser ActiveX control in the toolbar. I looked at the source code for
the control's HTML and saw that there's a critical line missing from it
that's necessary in SP2 to avoid the "information bar" when running
active content stored on the local system. It's commonly known as the
"Mark of the Web". You can read more about it here:

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/ie/6/all/reskit/en-us/

  appendix.mspx (do a search for Mark of the Web once the page is loaded)

Anyway, there's a trivial fix for this problem. Just add the following

  line to the file named "search.htm" (I found it in the directory in
which DQSD was installed), just after the line that contains "head"
(line 4 in the latest version on your web site):

!-- saved from url=""
 class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="about:internet">about:internet --

That's all there is to it! I hope that this isn't something you

  already knew about, because I didn't have time to go through all the
messages in your mailing list archives. A quick glance led me to
believe that you were approaching a fix by messing with the registry.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Failed to parse

2004-11-02 Thread Monty Scroggins
Isn't there an option in the preferences to turn off automatic version
checking? I dont have an install in front of me here, but I thought
that was a feature that could be turned off.. This became especially
desirable when the version checking was going to the sourceforge site
and the site was having problems... Anyway I think you can just turn
off the auto version checking and you will be good to go..

  Hi Don,

yes I am running 3.1.8
the link works but is gibberish to me
dqsd_version_info
typefinal/type

  That's the way it's supposed to look :) So far so good.

  Have you installed Windows XP SP2? If so, is your firewall enabled?
Can
  you try and disable it for the sake of testing (re-enable it as
soon as
  you can), to see if that's what does it?

  It could be that the firewall is blocking explorer.exe (Windows
  Explorer) from accessing the internet, and that's why you see this
  problem, but that's really just a guess.

The searches go through alright and the program works fine which
is
why I don't understand the error message.

  I think the version check (along with some of the more eclectic
  searches) is the only one to access the net directly, rather than
firing
  up a browser.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Quick Search bar has quit working...

2004-10-20 Thread Monty Scroggins

Yeah sp2 has created a problem with dqsd. but I dont believe all these
problems are related to the new security service in sp2.. but.. first
things first..

If dqsd is installed with sp2, it should still work, but you should get
a dialog which asks you whether to authorize dqsd to run. Its just an
annoyance, and the toolbar should otherwise work normally..

At the top of the dqsd.net site there is a link to a page that shows a
couple of registry edits you can make to change to allow dqsd to run
without the errors... - http://www.dqsd.net/sp2.htm -or- you can
just turn off the "Security Center" service in the admin tools. You
can always reverse these changes later.

Make one of these changes and see if any behavior is changed. I
think you still have an installation problem... Or you already have
the toolbar running and you are attempting to initiate it a second
time... If you do have an installation problem, I would uninstall
dqsd, reboot, rename the Quick Search Toolbar directory so it cant find
any files left behind, and re-install it again.. A clean install
should load without any warnings etc..

Re: [DQSD-Users] RE: Comx update: properly sized windows

2004-07-27 Thread Monty Scroggins

Subject: [DQSD-Users] RE: Comx update: properly sized windows

 Okay, this sounds like a job for localprefs.js. For me, comx works better
if
 the windows are resized after creation. For you, comx works better if the
 windows are sized at creation. Actually, if the window.open would just
 respect the specified dimensions when it opened on my PC, I would prefer
it
 that way, too. You like the image scaled to the window created; I like the
 original dimensions, unscaled.

I do too but thats a little tricky. Actually with the resizing you have in
now, since the original window is initially displayed so close to the actual
comic dimension, the resizing isnt even noticeable.. I like it..
Interestingly, the comic windows look vertically offset a tad on my win2k
machine, but the windows look perfectly tight on my XP machine.. Not
enough to worry about though.. looks fine..

 While we're about it, we should throw in a
 list of daily preferred comics, so I don't have to type them on the line
 (Yes, I do remember localaliases.txt).

heehee  aliases are your friend!...

 What about title bars? Should they be
 preference-based? Should window.open vs (how did we do it before?
 Document.open?) be preference-base? What other options should we let users
 set outside of code?

Nah its not worth all that.. it works great as it is.. and since the
defaults have now been moved inside a case statement, it makes it easier to
add other sites later on..

I like the package as it is now, with your latest resize mods..

Unless you object I would like to check it in..

Monty

 I didn't like the way comx was sizing the image to the window.

huh.. I'm not aware of this happening.. The same dimensions for the img
are used for the window.

 comics didn't look right either, because window.open seems to ignore the
 width and height parameters.

Hmm this isn't happening to me.. Dont know if it is an OS bug or something.
If I call window.open with height and width parameters, they seem to get
recognized...

 For all windows, I adjust the height and width
 numbers by 9 and 34 pixels, respectively. Then, I resize the window to fit
 the comic. This seems to render comics that are consistently the same
 dimensions as the original.

I dont think the comic dimensions are going to be any different, (with the
exception of the joy of tech and User Friendly) but the window is
tighter around them, which is nice.. Any skew in the display dimensions
and the actual dimensions on the webpages are going to still exist... but I
dont think its ever enough that the comic is hard to read..

Looks nice

FWIW,

Monty

 It looks like it also matches on more than one image .. so the first
 element needs to be specified on the pattern match..

 I think this will work:

 var pattern = /joyimages\/\S+.[jpg|png|gif]/ig;
 var result = sBody.match(pattern)[0];

 FWIW..

  Hey Gregory,

  There seems to be a weird inconsistency with the Joy of Tech site - all
  images have been .png's up until the last one, which is a .jpg all of a
  sudden... So, the regex no longer matches anything for Joy of Tech. I
 don't
  know if they change the image format intermittently or if they've
switched

  I'll see if I can patch the search so it accepts both formats for now.

2004-05-24 Thread Monty Scroggins
The concept is described here -

http://www.dqsd.net/faq.htm#Aliases

What you will want to do is use the run command.. examples are also
provided in the aliases.txt file (dont forget to use the localaliases.txt
file so your aliases wont be lost on an upgrade)..

Here is an example of calling explorer via the alias 'exp'..

exp|run explorer /e, %s

 Hi,

 I'm a big fan of the email command, and am interested in doing something
 similar for new tasks in Outlook.

 The following will bring up a new task box (in Outlook 2003):

 outlook.exe /c ipm.task

 But I have no idea how to make that into something where I could type in
to
 DQSD:

 Task doctor's appt on Tuesday

 And it would automatically populate the new task with the info. Any ideas?

Re: [DQSD-Users] UK Phone Search

2004-04-25 Thread Monty Scroggins

hmmm I didnt find one on the available list of searches
- http://www.dqsd.net/tools/dqsdtoc/searchtoc.pl
so I thought I would install the search wizard, and post a search for http://www2.bt.com/edq_resnamesearch/.

But the links to the wizardare broken, and it appears to
have two links to different versions on this page - http://www.dqsd.net/searchwizard.htm

Until the links are fixed, could someone
with the search wizard throw together a search and sling it to the
list?

 Hi there,

 Thanks for making it so easy to extend DQSD - it's a fantastic little app!
I
 searched around but I couldn't find a search for used books at
abebooks.com,
 which is a site I use regularly. So I've coded a search myself. The best
 feature is that it allows the user to specify location requirements -
 functionality I've been wanting for years. Would anyone be interested in
 this search?

 Kind regards,

 Dave.

I suspect this problem wont get much visibility until XP SP2 is actually
released.. I dont think there are too many people who have installed the
beta.

You might search around here - http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#SP2

[DQSD-Users] dqsd.net update

2004-04-09 Thread Monty Scroggins

I added the "searches table of contents" utility to
dave's dqsd.net site - http://www.dqsd.net/tools/dqsdtoc/searchtoc.pl

It has an auto cvs update on searches so any new
searches should be automatically included in the table.

I also modified the homepage to add a link to the
utility to help people get an idea of the 300+ things the toolbar can
do..

 Has anyone had any experiences with SP2 and DQSB?
 I've noticed a couple of issues on my system and wonder if it's just my
system or???

 First DQSB will not load without some user intervention. A message appears
in the task bar where DQSB should be indicating that This page has been
restricted from running active content... A couple of clicks enables the
search bar.

 The second issue is that the handy DQSB calendar no longer pops up where
it can be seen. It pops into the DQSB area rendering it rather useless.

 Thanks,
 Ken.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Can I change the default dict from dictionary.com to merriamwebster.com?

2004-04-02 Thread Monty Scroggins
MessageKerry,

Do I delete everything else in the localalias.txt doc so that all that's
there is this one line at the very top

Blank lines or lines that start with // are ignored.. You can just put
your entry at the end of the file... it will work fine..

Is , Configure , Reload the same as entering 1 or I or | or ! in the
text box? In other words, I can't tell what the character DQSD by entering
! in the text box. is so I pressed Configure Reload.

Hmm I don't totally understand the question about entering 1 or I, but what
you want to do is enter an exclaimation point (!) in the toolbar and press
return.I believe it is the same thing as selecting reload from the menu.

Also, am I correct that I would always have to include the prefix d ? If
so, it's not much different than what works now = : octogenaria In fact,
d or : saves a step, as I don't have to mouse the to get to
dictionary.com or Merriam.

Yes, ':', 'd', or 'mwm' would all call the Merriam Webster search. The
aliases just lets you call them what you wish.

sitevar sBody = xmlHttp.responseText;

then parse the results of the

  Silly question, how does one create the file ..\disabledsearches.txt?

 Monty Scroggins has put together a utility that can generate this file :
 http://www.master-minds.net/cgi-bin/disablesearches.cgi

Well not exactly. The disabedsearches.txt file is created by DQSD when the
help window is closed, provided that some searches were unchecked
beforehand. This file is used by the toolbar to know which searches to
exclude from the menu. The search remains in memory, but unavailable from
the menu...

The utility I created generates a batch file that external from the toolbar,
renames unwanted searches so the toolbar never recognizes the disabled
searches, and therfore never loads them into memory.

 Try as I may I cannot get the comx search to work. If I type Comx in DQSD
 window a pop-up appears showing all the available comix and their
 associated switches. If I type comx /rip I receive the following error
 message.

 An error has occurred in the script on this page

 Url: File://C:\\program files\quicksearch\deskbar\\search.htm

 Would anyone be able to help me through this error?

 Thanks

Re: [DQSD-Users] Can a search write a file?

2004-03-04 Thread Monty Scroggins

 Can a search be made to save some content to a file? What I should like to
 do is this: to have comx - to which I have become quite attached -
 automaticaly save its content to a file in the same way that I might do
 myself, with a right-click and save picture as. In fact I should like to
 open several at once and save them all...

hmm automatically I dont know... There are functions to write to a file,
the history for example is written to a file. You might have to dig around
the js files to find the functions and see how they are called...

If you want to manually save the images you can take out galleryimg='no'
from line 414 in your local copy of the search. This will enable the little
imagetoolbar that will popup when a single comic is solicited. The image
toolbar that pops up in the top left corner of the graphic when the mouse is
over the image, has four icons, one of them is to save I think...

When multiple comics are solicited at once, they are displayed in normal
windows and you can right-click the image and save it from there...

 And (though it may not seem related) I wonder if an alias can be made to
 include qualifiers, since I have not been able to make this work. I should
 like to make an alias like myfavoritecomics to mean comx /this /and
 /that.

Hmmm aliases used to be able to do this...

I put  comics|comx /reyn /garfield /herman|my comics in my
localaliases.txt file, and reloaded the toolbar. It does work *but* beware
of whitespace. I you have this -

comics | comx /reyn /garfield /herman|my comics
or even this -
comics |comx /reyn /garfield /herman|my comics

it wont work because of whitespace around the | delimiter... (It should
work if selected off the menu though).. I think this is a bug that should
be fixed Until then, be careful with the whitespace around the
delimiters and you should be ok.

Fw: [DQSD-Users] comx: additional comics request

2004-03-03 Thread Monty Scroggins

I just posted another update to the comx.xml to the CVS repository.

 This version adds the capability of specifying multiple comic strips on the
same line.

 For example -

 comx /herman /garfield /reyn /wiz

 This will load Herman, Garfield, Reynolds Unwrapped, and the Wizard of ID
 all at once..

Re: [DQSD-Users] problem settin firefox as default (even with setbrowser)

2004-03-01 Thread Monty Scroggins
Does Firefox startup if you directly double-click a .html file? The one
dqsd is executing is in your temp folder and is called DQSDLaunch.html.
Find this file and double-click it and see which browser starts.

Could there be some formatting problem with your localprefs.js file causing
it to not load properly?

Try this -
Rename localprefs.js to take it completely out of the equation and set
launchmode=1 (not 2) in preferences.js

/* Browser launch mode
*  0=use IE
*  1=use default browser
* 2=auto (launches in IE directly if IE is default browser) [default]
*/
launchmode=1;

Something to try..

 Yeah, I can see that this must be a windows problem. I'm really at wit's
end
 and may have to accept defeat. I had already tried manually associating
 firfox with .htm, .html, and url:blah blah... That didn't work. The
 reinstalling didn't work either! What I don't understand is that every
other
 application I have accepts firefox as the default. When I click on any
link
 or shortcut, even within Outlook, it fires up firefox ;-) And, like I
said,
 the google deskbar sends its searches to firefox. Heck, even the windows
 address bar opens firefox! So, although I accept that it's a windows
 problem, I just don't understand how no other applications seem to fall
prey
 to this windows weakness... I don't want to suggest it's a bug in dqsd,
but
 maybe dqsd should develop some way around this issue for those of us who
 can't get it working. Why couldn't there be a preference for the path to
the
 browser?

 Thanks all for your help!

 Based on Monty's reply you could always try setting it the hard way.

 I can think of 2 methods.

 1. Have .htm and .html on your PC. Browse to them in Windows Explorer.
 Right Click and Open With... Choose Program. When the select app
window
 appears check off the box that says always use this app to open this type
of
 file.

 See if that does the trick.

 Else...

 2. Open Windows Explorer. Tools... Folder Options... File Types. Find
 URL:Hyper Text Transport Protocol, HTM and HTML and make sure their
 default action is open ant that the application is the browser that you
 want.

 Let us know if that helps.

  My $.02

  I dont think this is a DQSD problem but a failure of windows to handle
  the default browser properly... I have had similar problems in the
  past.. Reinstalling DQSD wont fix the problem because the problem is
  upstream of the toolbar. I installed Firefox. Fired it up (no pun
  intended :-) ) and set it to the default browser... dqsd worked with
  it just
  fine..I then
  started up IE over and over, and it *never once* inquired about
  setting itself to the default browser, even though it is in the
  internet settings to ask.. I started Netcaptor and it too never
  prompted me to set it to the default browser (no surprise since
  Netcaptor is based on IE).
I loaded
  setbrowser and forced the default to Netcaptor. Still the
  default didn't
  change. I tried a couple of searches and I got script
  errors a couple of
  times and on the third or fourth attempt, VOILA! I was prompted to set
  my default browser.. I accepted the change and now the default is
  Netcaptor again...

  Clearly there is a bug in windows that it doesn't detect default
  browser settings all the time.

  I would mess with the browser settings and try to get windows to
  recognize the changes. DQSD merely writes out an html file and
  executes it.. It is up to windows to figure out which application to
  load for it..

  can't give

right.. The Calvin and Hobbes comic being served up is from 1993. The
reason no comic displayed today is that this is a leap year, and there was
no Feb 29 in 1993.

 Hiya Monty..

Today, I noticed that Calvin and Hobbes opens a Sunday-sized window,
 but shows no comic. Yesterday (Saturday), it opened a Sunday-sized
 window (as it should have) and displayed the comic. ucomics is
 're-issuing' the Calvin and Hobbes comics, one day at a time, so only on
 rare years are the days of the week aligned exactly...

   Calvin and Hobbes works now, thanks - but I also saw
   that Doonesbury is mis-spelled too :)

  Cool .. got it fixed..

   Also you could use:

   if( nullArgs(comx, q) )
   return false;

   instead of:

if( q == ? ){
   qsfind(comx /function);
   return false;
}
if( q ==  ){
   qsfind(comx /function);
   return false;
}

  I didnt like the nullArgs in this case because it opens the link page.
 I
  just wanted to display the help window.. The comics come from a couple
of
  different pages.. I did at least combine the two tests to a single
one..

   Also I don't like the IE image toolbar popping up over
   my comic so you could add:

   META HTTP-EQUIV=imagetoolbar CONTENT=no

  Hmm I tried putting this in the popup html, but it crashes explorer!...
  Maybe I am doing something wrong...

   And finally since I got my other wish for Garfield :)
   how about displaying multiple comics on one page - I
   find myself having to keep typing in the following
   sequence to read all my comics:

  Oh man... Its a nice idea but I will probably leave this for someone
with
  better skills than mine.. I am pushing my learning limits already!..
  heehee Maybe after a break I could try to tackle it..

  Thanks for the feedback!..

I removed a few comics from the search for this reason..

I added Calvin and Hobbs. and removed some programming sillyness.

Attached is the modified search..., it should be good for Sundays' comics as
well..

 comx /born returns The Born Loser. I didn't know which one it would
 return The Born Loser or Born Lucky.

 But comx /bornlucky doesn't work for me. It opens a window but the

  Ah.. Born Loser is a weekly comic.. Comics have to be daily for their
pic
  to be fetched..

  I removed a few comics from the search for this reason..

  I added Calvin and Hobbs. and removed some programming sillyness.

  Attached is the modified search..., it should be good for Sundays'
comics
 as
  well..

please give it a test or two..

   comx /born returns The Born Loser. I didn't know which one it would

   But comx /bornlucky doesn't work for me. It opens a window but the

Re: [DQSD-Users] Re: [DQSD-Devel] comx: additional comics request

2004-02-28 Thread Monty Scroggins

 Calvin and Hobbes works now, thanks - but I also saw
 that Doonesbury is mis-spelled too :)

Cool .. got it fixed..

 Also you could use:

 if( nullArgs(comx, q) )
 return false;

 instead of:

  if( q == ? ){
 qsfind(comx /function);
 return false;
  }
  if( q ==  ){
 qsfind(comx /function);
 return false;
  }

I didnt like the nullArgs in this case because it opens the link page. I
just wanted to display the help window.. The comics come from a couple of
different pages.. I did at least combine the two tests to a single one..

Oh man... Its a nice idea but I will probably leave this for someone with
better skills than mine.. I am pushing my learning limits already!..
heehee Maybe after a break I could try to tackle it..

Thanks for the feedback!..

Monty

Re: [DQSD-Users] Installs to c drive moving

2004-02-27 Thread Monty Scroggins
Tom if it helps any in the future, the renaming utility can toggle all the
searches at once with the buttons at the top of the page and also the
utility can toggle the searches in a particular category by clicking the
category name in the category column (computers, finance, etc.).. It's
still a fair amount of clicking of course, but if you are enabling the vast
majority of the searches in a category, you can enable all of them at once,
then click them off to disable them...

Of course hang on to the batch file, -or- save the form with one of the form
fillers (roboform etc) for future use..

Please dont send me any doctor bills for carpal tunnel syndrome... :-)

 Just copy all the .xml_disabled files to a different directory d:\temp
 Then at a DOS prompt ren d:\temp\*.xml_disabled *.xml

2004-02-25 Thread Monty Scroggins
I modified the comx.xml search to use the full comic names for the switches,
hence a few of the switches have changed. Since the switches can be
abbreviated, it should be really forgiving for input.

HA!.. uncanny .. I didnt like
that problem either.. I changed the xml yesterday to use
ParseArgs.. I checked the file into CVS but didnt bother to post to
the group.. I didnt realize I wasnt getting email
messages... Please pull one from CVS and give it a go.. if you want
I can send it to the list as well...

Monty

Hi Monty,Is there any reason you didn't use
parseArgs? It automatches so I can type comx /dil and it'll go to
thedilbert comics instead of having to type comx
/dilbertcompletely. Also I tried comx /born to try the
bornloser comic and got a runtime error and then realizedit was
/loser. So you should probably check forinvalid
input.My $.02,Brent

 ...would one of those fixes be the window-size? Today's Peanuts comic
doesn't fit in the window. :( ...in fact, none of the Sunday-sized
comics fit.  :'(

 Sarah, it should get installed by the latest version from about
 Christmas time. It is already in CVS, but SourceForge is having
 problems (has been for some time now) and their web interface just isn't
 showing the latest files.

 I'll try to send it to you off list, though.

 JB

  I'm looking for the files referred to in this message,
  localsearch_silver.css in particular:

Re: [DQSD-Users] RSSX: RSS Parsing Search (beta)

2004-02-17 Thread Monty Scroggins
I have a couple of ideas..

First, instead of hard-coding a width of 380 px, it would be nice to specify
a min of 380, but get the width of the rss window. This is useful when
viewing a graphic. I was tinkering with the xml a bit and added this to
the displayRssxSearchPopup() to do this -

  //var windowW = 380;
// Temporarily show the popup to determine the proper final height for
the popup.
rssxSearchPopup.show(0, 0, windowW, 0);
var windowH = rssxSearchPopupBody.scrollHeight + 6;
  var windowW = rssxSearchPopupBody.scrollWidth;
rssxSearchPopup.hide();

// Put a cap on the popup height
windowH = windowH  window.screen.height-100 ? window.screen.height-100
: windowH;
  // set a min popup width
   windowW = windowW  380 ? rssxSearchPopupBody.scrollWidth : 380;

I would like to specify the delay time and the number of rss samples
executed before it automatically terminates as an argument.. This is so
that I can define an alias to load a single sample, and display for a
certain amount of time before terminating... This is handy for loading the
daily comics like dilbert - rssx http://dwlt.net/tapestry/dilbert.rdf

There are a whole slew of comics that would be nifty to pull via the rssx
search - http://dwlt.net/tapestry/

What do you think?

Re: [DQSD-Users] Error Message

2004-02-08 Thread Monty Scroggins
This is an online version check to see if an update is available.. It is
failing because the website to which it is connecting hasn't received the
latest updates..

To turn the auto-check off, set checkForUpdate = false in your
localprefs.js file.

Example:

/* Check web for an updated version each time the toolbar is started */
checkForUpdate = true;
checkForUpdateDelay = 1; // millisecond delay after first search

  Thanks very much. If it's not doing any harm and it's only a
  matter of a short time before the site gets the updates, I
  think I'd just as soon leave it alone, so I don't have to
  remember to turn it back on again later.

 Ken the problem is that the engine (or what ever you call it) that
 updates all the right documents to all the right places seems to be
 broken (either on the SourceForge end or on Dave's end, due to some
 SourceForge change).

 So how long before the updates propagate... Who knows?

Re: [DQSD-Users] ANN: DQSD 3.1.8 goes final!

2004-01-19 Thread Monty Scroggins
Does the uninstaller remove the local* files and directory? I think these
are left untouched along with the menu history and the command history
files...

A couple of questions about the installer:

Shouldn't the installer create the localsearches directory if it doesnt
exist?

What about asking for an install path? Is the C:\Program Files...
directory hardcoded somewhere? I typically install applications to my
D:\Program Files... directory, but I am not afforded the opportunity to pick
a different location in the install process...

FWIW,

 In case you don't know - to backup your settings, save the following
 files somewhere:

 - localsearch.css
 - localaliases.txt
 - localprefs.js
 - localevents.xml
 - localsearches directory

Re: [DQSD-Users] ANN: DQSD 3.1.8 goes final!

2004-01-19 Thread Monty Scroggins
The installer might already have this behavior, but I dont know offhand...
Its been a while since any of this was discussed on the group..

IMO the installer should:

Not over-write any local* file if one already exists.. I think the bundle
comes with a couple of empty local* files localsearch.css and localprefs.js
?

Create the localsearches directory if it doesnt exist.

The uninstaller should:

Not delete any local* files at all..

Not delete the mrmenu.txt and history.txt files..

Again, I think this is largely the behavior anyway...

FWIW

Monty

 Hi Monty,

 command history
  files...

 Yeah, it does - I thought the same, but I just now accidentally
uninstalled
 DQSD, and lost my local*.
 I've been thinking that should be fixed, but I wasn't sure if it was by
 design.

  Shouldn't the installer create the localsearches directory if
  it doesnt exist?

 Yes, it might as well, so people don't have to figure out the name of the
 dir.

[DQSD-Users] enable/disable searches utility mod

2004-01-18 Thread Monty Scroggins
I made a few improvements to my online search disabling/enabling utility:

http://www.master-minds.net/cgi-bin/disablesearches.cgi

1. The dqsd install directory can be specified if it is different from the
default location.

2. The search.xml_disabled files aren't deleted if the search.xml
doesn't exist. Previously if the generated batch file was executed more
than once, the previously disabled searches would be removed even though an
enabled version of the search didn't exist.

3. The utility will now allow the user to enable previously disabled
searches without re-acquiring the xml files.

4. I fixed a bug in the pattern matching regex where embedded xml files were
being detected in longer xml filenames.. for example, I was finding faq.xml
in gfaq.xml.

enjoy,

Monty

[DQSD-Users] new XP scheme additions

2004-01-17 Thread Monty Scroggins
I took the color scheme graphics and made a consistent template. With the
exception of the colors being used, the look across all 3 color schemes is
the same.

I also created a neutral default scheme that could be used if the user
isnt running one of the standard 3 color schemes.

I renamed the graphics for consistency.

I renamed the associated css files for each scheme to be consistent.

I also cleaned up the magnifying glass icon to look a little better,
especially on dark backgrounds..

Since none of this involves a change to source, could this be included in
the 3.1.8 release?.

Also, if the new graphics are included in the dqsd release, the existing
xptoolbartop.bmp and xptoolbarbot.bmp files are redundant and could be
removed.

To enable the color scheme, all the user has to do is copy
localsearch_color.css to localsearch.css.

The included files in the zip are:

xptoolbar2_default.bmp
xptoolbar1_default.bmp
xptoolbar1_silver.bmp
xptoolbar2_silver.bmp
xptoolbar1_olive.bmp
xptoolbar2_olive.bmp
xptoolbar1_blue.bmp
xptoolbar2_blue.bmp

localsearch_default.css
localsearch_silver.css
localsearch_olive.css
localsearch_blue.css

[DQSD-Users] Re: Background of search button should be translucent

2004-01-16 Thread Monty Scroggins
  The background of the image is transparent.. The problem
  is, XP overlays graphics on the title bars. The color you see in the
back of
  the image is the system 3d objects' color coming through the graphic.

I think a couple of things could be done to help with the XP display
problem. The default toolbar looks awful on XP. A css style to adjust a
bit on the toolbar to be more acceptable across all OS's would help, but it
doesnt fix the problem, (although I had a css style which I thought was
decent on all OS's )... but it was a change in look from the original
default...

XP comes with 3 color schemes - Blue, Olive, and Silver.I think we could
support these schemes, but for any themes downloaded from the internet, the
user would be on his/her own to adjust graphics/css to match..
We already have blue graphics, I have seen silver (Glenn), all we would need
is olive, and a way to either modify the xplocalsearch.css to call the
appropriate graphics etc, or two new css sheets could be added to the distro
that can be copied. (at 950 bytes for the current localsearch.css this
might be the best way to go).. Does anyone out there have the olive
graphics that could be contributed?

Also, dqsd could include a forth set of (vanilla) graphics that are dqsd
specific, and didn't attempt to match the scheme of the OS's..This would
truly set a look for the toolbar that would be the same across all OS's..
The '' menubutton would have to be changed to optionally load a graphic,
but this should be doable in css as well.

Of course the graphics overlays should be optional, as in any OS other than
XP, the toolbar blends in with the taskbar, and the user might not want to
have a toolbar with its own look..

Just a thought or two..

Monty
