This
isn't isolated.  At home where I've added all the latest Sourceforge CVS
files, I have the file "disabledsearches.txt".  But here at work, I only
installed the latest beta.  I have do not have the txt file, and it
doesn't get written if I uncheck a box.

Looking at the folder, if memory serves there was an additional .js file
added (disabledsearches.js or something like that?).  But it appears that
file is not being distributed with the latest release.

The idea is to be able to inhibit loading countless search
  forms,
functions, variables etc that arent needed or wanted by the

If I only want or use 60 of them, why load all 190?..   The
  idea of
disabling the searches was aimed at reducing the
  needless

Disabled searches are recorded in the
  disabledsearches.txt
file and the list is generated automatically by the toolbar and

implemented when the toolbar is loaded or refreshed.
  Disabled
  searches should stay
  disabled until enabled again...

The only way it benefits is that the prefixes don't interfere with default
google searches, i.e., if I accidently enter a prefix for search I never use
when I'm actually searching for a string with that prefix.

Definitely, this is up for question as to whether it's worth including. I
would certainly like to give them the option of not loading the search at
all. But, I stopped with this. I'd also like to see this as the first step
in getting updated searches from a central server.

> who
> knows, in some rare occurrence you may need a search you have disabled.

True. If a search is disabled, it's easy enough to enable it again.

One of the things I neglected was removing disabled searches from the popup
menu. But, the more I thought about it the more I thought this might be
desirable (but definitely needing documentation)... searches entered at the
command-line are disabled, but searches selected from the popup are not
disabled. Maybe that's just weird.

Simply closing the help window should save a list of disabled searches to a
text file in the install directory.

I'm wrestling with the same thoughts. I'd like to see additions like this
be totally self-contained in an XML file, so they could be made available as
an add-on, for tech-savvy users (including the calendar code which I seldom
use.)

Unfortunately, this may mean that they popup menu can't be expanded (without
some work by someone to make that available to an XML search somehow.)

> i feel like a "nay-sayer". i am i missing something?

Nope. Definitely good questions. I'd like to hear more thoughts and
discussion. Also, I don't have any problem yanking the enable/disable
search feature.

I
guess I must ask, does a calendar, a calculator, or a clock add to our
ability to search?  Don't get me wrong, I think these are excellent
features.  But you must agree - DQSD is more than a "Search
Bar".  Almost nothing in the "Functions" category is search related.
But I am still glad they are there.

> does the
snippet feature add to our ability to search?
If you've found
something you were looking for, Snippets are a great way to record what you've
found.  I think it goes hand in hand with
searching.

> can i achieve the same
result with notepad open?
No.  This editor allows you to paste portions, or all, of a web
page, or web pages, into it.  These "snippets" look exactly as
they do on the original web page.  Of course, you can edit the pasted
contents.  You could achieve the same thing with FrontPage or Word
openbut I don't think that counts for obvious reasons.

Hope
that helps.  I definitely hope you give it a try.

a few questions about the new stuff.

  1. how does disabling searches benefit us?
does it help in load time?  does it just cut down on clutter in the
menu?  if having all searches loaded isn't hurting anything, why
bother?  who knows, in some rare occurrence you may need a search you
  have disabled.

open the help window and the searches i unchecked are re-checked.  also i
see no new disabledsearches.txt (or whatever the name should be) in my quick
search directory.  is there a save button i'm missing, to save disabled
  searches?

  3. i haven't tried this snippet thing.  i'm
not sure how i am supposed to use it and why.  Glenn asked what others
thought about making it a standard feature... i'm not sure... (maybe because i
haven't tried it) but it seems to me to border on scope creep... or does
it?  this is a search bar... does the snippet feature add to our ability
to search?  can i achieve the same result with notepad open?
