Re: [DQSD-Users] Can I have Merriam Webster be the default dict?

Re: "C:\Windows\explorer.exe to the list of exceptions" I added it but
still get the dreaded
"DQSD failed to parse on-line version information.
Error message: The download of the specific resource has failed."

FYI: Upon boot this morning I couldn't get the DQSD chevrons. I closed all apps so none were taking up space and it still no chevrons even with my dbl clicking the Search icon trick. Then for some reason after much finageling they appeared. I then added the exceptions and tried the update with the above result.

Thanks,
Kerry

I did the "Check for update" procedure twice with the same results.
Thanks, I'll be so pleased if I can get it working as it did
before I upgraded to XP Pro and Service Pack 2.

Since you have SP2, you probably have the firewall enabled.
DQSD requires internet access for the update checks, so that could be it.

If you want to test, add C:\Windows\explorer.exe to the list of exceptions
temporarily, then do Check for Update. Does that work?

You may want to add explorer.exe back afterwards, in case you don't
desperately need update checks.

When you get the taskbar sized and shaped exactly the way you want
it (the quick launch toolbar, DQSD and the 'rest' of it) you can
right click over the taskbar and check 'lock taskbar/toolbars' (or
something like that) to prevent them from resizing on you.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Can I have Merriam Webster be the default dict?

2005-01-06 Thread Kerry

Hi Kim:

You were right but now it's behaving differently than before when I had
XP Home and before ServicePack 2 . What I just did to get it to work is
dbl click on the word Search to the right of the vertical  DQSD sizing
bar. What happens is the Search icon jumps to the far left (touching
the Quick Launch's vertical sizing bar), revealing a very large search
field. Then the >> chevrons are displayed, which when I click
them the DQSD menu appears correctly. The calendar displays correctly

With XP Home I'd size search field so that the day, date and time fit
exactly in the search field and, the chevrons would be at the right end
of the search field.

When I selected "Check for update" I got the exact same error massage
"DQSD failed to parse on-line version information.
Error message: The download of the specific resource has failed."
I did the "Check for update" procedure twice with the same results.

Thanks, I'll be so pleased if I can get it working as it did before I
upgraded to XP Pro and Service Pack 2.

With aloha,

Kerry

I think you're clicking the wrong chevron. DQSD's is pointing the other way:
">>". However, it only becomes visible if the search field holds a certain
width, so try making it wider, and it should appear just to the right of the
input box. I believe the one you're trying is the one that displays all tray
notification area icons.

I also got a desktop
message "DQSD failed to parse on-line version information.
Error message: The download of the specific resource has failed."

Provided you get the menu showing, can you try and click "Check for
update..."? I think you may have run into a temporary error, but I want to
make sure.

Cheers,
Kim

Thanks Shawn,
": wordtobedefined" worked great, however, even though the MW site came
up with the word defined I also got a desktop message "DQSD failed to
parse on-line version information. Error message: The download of the
specific resource has failed."

And, now when I single, dbl, or right click on the << the tool tray
expands and I can't get the DQSD menu but I can get the calendar by

Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks,

Is there a way to have Merriam Webster be the default
dictionary - it has free pronunciation.

You can control DQSD just about any way you could want. To override
any existing search with another you just create an alias that
overwrites the existing mapping. Add this to localaliases.txt, on
it's own line:
 dic|mwd %s
This will change the behavior of "dic" to search the Merriam Webster
instead. HOWEVER, you can also shorten that a bit by using the
default shorter search alias for MW of ":". Try this in DQSD (note
the preceeding colon):
 :whatever
