Re: [Drakelist] The Heathkit Shop

2013-02-19 Thread Kevin Elliott
I made a mistake with regard to the Heathkit Shop I had instead ordered from
from Harbach.  Sometimes the effects of a stroke are more evident than others.
Sorry if this caused any confusion.___

[Drakelist] TR-4 issues

2013-02-14 Thread Kevin Elliott
I have been given a TR-4 that a young ham had been attempting to replace the
power switch/volume control and gain control.  He thinks he rewired it wrong
initially because prior to this attempt he states that the radio had a great
deal of volume and now even with the control at max it is acting as if it is
barely turned on. Not being all that great at troubleshooting would someone
venture a guess as you what he may have done wrong.  If we are to assume the
worst case scenario I would assume that is the 120volt going into the audio
section where would you suggest looking?  I am doing this to learn more about
troubleshooting as well as the young fellow was afraid someone would make fun
of him hear.  I assured him that it would be in good fun if anyone did.

[Drakelist] Question regarding the Drake TR-4

2012-03-26 Thread Kevin Elliott
I have three TR-4's and tow of them have flat metal dial piece behind the main
tuning dial, one other has the metal dial which has a bend on the outer edge.
Which of these designs is from the newest version of the TR-4?

[Drakelist] Question for the group

2011-10-11 Thread Kevin Elliott
I purchased a nice TR4 with NB for a fellow and he also tossed in two other
complete non-working TR4's and an extra AC-4 and a power supply made from a
Heathkit power supply and an extra RV-4.  One of the non-working radios has had
the chassis butchered where someone drilled a hole in the side of it and
installed a toggle switch to turn the radio on and off when the switch failed.
The other radio is in better shape but the receive is barely audible. The
repair of the radio is out of pay grade and really not wanting to spends 50 to
100 dollars to be told it is junk.  I should add both radios have the wired NB
in them.  The question is would I be better off trying to sell the 2 radio as
complete units or piece them out and sell them for parts?

Tnx and 73

[Drakelist] Blue LED Bulbs for Drakes

2011-02-02 Thread Kevin Elliott
First I want to say I am sorry if this upsets the person that is making and
selling the blue LED bulbs on Ebay and other web sites.  I just can't afford to
pay $30.00 plus shipping for 2 bulbs.   So I went looking for a different
source
and I found one that was much cheaper.  The company sells #47 Blue (or other
color) LED bulbs. The best thing is the price... $1.58 each.  The worked
perfect
on the main dial but were not quite bright enough for the meters until I took
the reflector off and scrubbed it white again.  Now for $3.18 I can but the
blue
bulbs in the TR-4 or even opt for red since I ordered some of them and they
look
very nice as well.

[Drakelist] Want to buy...

2011-01-26 Thread Kevin Elliott
Hi,

If anyone has a set of T4anything and R4anything that they want to sell please
email me and let me know what you need for them.  I do not need a power supply
and the cases do not have to be in flawless conditions since I can just repaint
them.  If you don't have those perhaps you have a TR4 or TR4C  or CW that you
would like to part with.  I would be interested in either the pair of radios or
a TR4, TR4C or TR4CW.

Thanks
Kevin Elliott

I am about ready to get rid of my Kenwood TS-2000 and get all tube radios, the
sound quality of my TR4 finds me using it far more than my 2000.

[Drakelist] Question about the 9MC filters

2011-01-25 Thread Kevin Elliott
I have been reading all of the posts in the new Drake archive and the old Drake
archive trying to learn as much as I can about my TR4.  To you old pros this
will be a rookie question, but I am of the belief that if you don't ask you
don't learn.  Okay I have read where it has been said that you can use a couple
of different ways to set C130 correctly.  One being use a digital receiver and
listening for the matching null and the one that I want to ask about is using a
scope to adjust them.  Where will the scope probe be connected to read this
information or is it indirectly connected with a loop of wire around the
oscillator tube to see the nulls.

I got the Great service CD and I love it and will be going through it and
digesting all I can.

Thanks

[Drakelist] Question regarding TR4

2011-01-20 Thread Kevin Elliott
While I wait for my repair CDs to arrive I have found something I need some
information on.  I am in the process of retubing the TR4 I have and I went down
the list of tubes in the voltage chart and ordered all of the tubes.  That I
think is my first mistake because when I took the cover off and got ready to
install the tubes the first one was a 6BZ6 tube I come to find out there are
none in use on this particular radio.  Am I safe to assume that they made a
revision either before this radio or afterwards and went to the 12BA6 tubes
which I am finding are getting hard to find. My radio shows that tubes V13, V12
and V11 are all 12BA6 and it has arrows pointing to all three tubes.  The
serial
number on the radio is 23567 so if anyone can tell me what year that is I would
appreciate it.

Thanks and 73

[Drakelist] Looking to make a trade for a nice TR4

2011-01-19 Thread Kevin Elliott
I have post an ad on QST.com where I have listed an Oak Hill Research OHR 500,
which is a 5-band QRP tranciever with an add-on digital display which can be
used on numerous radio besides the OHR-500.  The radio has a built in keyer,
adjustable power from 0 ~ full power, switchable filter and AGC.  The radio and
the digital display are mint condition and the radio in kit form sold for
$359.00 and the display for $100.00.  I would like to trade the radio and
digital display for a nice TR-4 or TR-4C, or CW.  No tech specials or fixer
uppers please.

I really don't need a power supply so you can deduct the cost of it and put the
value of what it is worth towards offering a better TR-4

[Drakelist] What is this system worth

2010-04-09 Thread Kevin Elliott

I have these items that I think I may get rid of since I am running out of
space and was curious what they would be worth and yes I know the markets
varies by how bad someone wants it. I just need a ballpark price where I
will not be giving it away.

Drake TR-4 w/ NB

AC-4 with Heathkit Store Re-build kit installed

MS-4 speaker cabinet

RV-4 Remote VFO

MN-4 Match Box

Conditions on all items is 8.5 to 9 except for the MS-4 which needs the
grill repainted is about an 8.

Any opinions are welcomed. Would selling them piece by piece be the way to
go?

Tnx 73 - KG0MN

Kevin

[Drakelist] TR4 and SB-200 Question

2010-01-17 Thread Kevin Elliott

I have just recently purchased an extremely nice SB-200 with all of the
Harbach mods installed, my question is this. With all of the mods installed
which are mainly aimed at allowing the SB-200 to play better with today
solid-state rigs, do these mods, in particular the Soft-Key mod now prohibit
me from using my Drake TR-4 with the amplifier? I do realize one of my
major concerns it to not overdrive the amp with the TR-4. After reading the
suggestion which was posted a week or so back I think I may use the
T-connector and a 100-watt dummy load setup to help solve the over driving
problem. I am wondering if I should just use the ALC line and perhaps a
foot switch on the amp. Any suggestions or feedback is appreciated.

73,

Kevin - KG0MN
