Hello Group The last remaining problem with my R4B refurb is the 4 Section
Electrolytic Cap. Does anyone
know a source to rebuild my Electrolytic? I am willing to pay Postage/Parts
Labor time. Or purchase one
already rebuilt.

is the case. I know they are not common, but I seem to remember someone
developing a blanker circuit for the Drake 4 Line. Anyone have info about

normal, I get a great deal of hum in the speaker. Too much hum to hear
signals.

Is there anything that is easy to find at say walmart or office depot that
one could use to make Blue filters out of for a B line? I also need some
Red for my vintage Raytrack 2000DX Amplifier.
I see you can buy 'Lightning Gels' for about $1.29 ea in lots of colors for
'stage' use that are heat
and I could not find it in the
Archives.

level and were not steady. The meter did not seem
to read anything over 80mV this was just with a very short piece of
wire as an antenna.
Next step will be to get the T4Xb out of the wrapper and see if the
p/s and transmitter work...

line as that powers the VFO (I think).

resistor in the AC4 opened this has been replaced with an
on-hand 150 ohm 5 watt which is still running hot with the tubes in
Filament fuse opened and has been replaced with proper fuse
Will ck some more voltages tomorrow.

Thanks for the Info on the VOX connector.
Now that the T4Xb is working again I will be back to testing the Amp (Alpha
78) when I get the amp keying cables made up. Checked in to some 40M nets
and left the T4 on for a few days. Seems solid again. Still has the cover
off on the 'bench'.

Bud I cleaned mine in the kitchen sink with dish soap and a toothbrush.
Maybe not a great idea as some of the white came off.

seems to be 'normal' as the coupling to T9 should show only the
resistance of the T9 and the small coax from the Lamp Fuse.
Any other troubleshooting ideas from the group?

The lamp fuse is good. Coax reads 'shorted' as it leaves the fuse and
relay area same at the ant connector so-239 on rear of rig.

I used my regular solder. There are some cautions about overheating
the tube seals but I ignored them and used a large but only 40 watt
iron with no heatsink and it worked for me. Take a good look at the
springs in the socket too they should close when the tube pins are

I am currently working on a TR-4 that seems to have one bad filter.
Works in one position and no signal at all in the other position. My
TR-4 seems to have 'blue' rectangle filters. I looked at the
possibility of using an InRad or waiting for a replacement. Is there
any chance of opening the

filters but they do not seem to be Tyco filters mine are made by
TEDxxx (cant quite read) Crystal Lab in Ohio they are blue and are
numbers 2100U and 2100L. Would a 'Tyco' filter work as a sub?

Found another short in the RX ant coax where the two leads come to the
slide switch. Redressed the small coax here and then realized that
the lamp was indeed bad. Put a jumper across the bulb and now have
normal RX in the X sideband position. Rig is still inop in the non X
position.

PTO stability seems 'normal' so can this mechanicall instability be
'cured' by working on the drive?
The other issue that remains is the 'non X' filter seems to be open.

My B-line has been working but today that after hooking it back up
(was working on a TR-4) I noticed that the R-4b was not muting or
going into Standby.
In standby or ext mute (w/o short in RCA Mute)audio is distorted
RF Gain only raises S Meter to 20 over or so.
Something seems to have changed

I tried a crude measurement on the working 'X' filter marked
SSB 9M 2100 U
Why does the 'U' filter peak on the low side of the Center Freq?
The 'non X' filter will not pass a signal btw it is marked 2100 L

Today (and yesterday) I opened the TR-4 filter and replaced all the
crystals with unselected DigiKey 50cent crystals. Now the dead filter
does pass a signal but is not useful. Good learning fun though and I

Here are some reference readings for an original AC-3 that is working
with full power and reasonable audio reports. It is out of spec
though and running warm.
Note: Recommended Max Ripple is 2VAC on HV 1VAC on 250V line and .5VAC on Bias

1. Use glue like JB Weld or Super Glue
2. put more solder on the threads of the rod and press fit
it back on with a hammer
3. put more solder on the threads AND the fork soldering
them together.
Opt 1 would be the easest and safest method it seems...??

Got the PTO rod out today Yea! Yes, the PTO is out of the rig. I ran
the fork to the end of the screw then undid the tension adj hex screw.
Of course then the balls started to drop out and I removed the
plastic gear and it's rod by removing the 'clip washer' (not sure what
it's real name is).
Tuning Rod resoldered and braid attached at one end. Pix on blog
(link below) now to put the balls back in and attach the other end of
the braid.

Have been using the AC4 with the Heathkit shop now for a couple of
weeks and it is great to be back to getting good audio reports. Still
have the AC3 and the TR4 project to work on this winter. Drakes are
great in the shack when it starts to get cold outside.
The results with this third (and final---I promise!) test were most
interesting (NOTE: for comparative purposes, I have
square-bracketed---[ ]---the changes observed at the very same time
intervals in the FIRST test, at the end of each observation line).
Here goes:
(1) 5455.0-KHz (cold

Had the 'twins' on a bit with new EFHW antenna works well but am still
playing with the matcher unit.

S-Meter is now working better and RX sensitivity is better after poking and
tighting. I think the relay or fuse lamp socket was not making good
contact. Tightened a bunch of screws.
S-Meter only goes to half scale in XMIT. I found this problem on and R4b
and found what I did on it a few years
