What application(s)? Corrupted how?

LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxgears

actually I compiled dri sources from CVS and I installed them.
Synaptics driver now does not cause problems any more
but two problems persist:
1) text in open gl application is corrupted
2) I get only 200 fps (though glxinfo says dri is enabled)

if I compile dri-tree sources from CVS
what directories should I backup to restore the original xfree86 files
if the dri binaries won't work?
making a backup copy of /usr/X11R6/ and /etc/X11
is enough?

in particular the fact that I can't use synaptics

Hi Alex,
this the log of the X I'm currently running (plain
debian 4.3.0 package without latest dri installed),
I sent you this file just to show my hardware and settings...
with dri binaries installed I had in Xfree86.0.log
a line like this:
(II) RADEON(0): Direct rendering enabled
and glxgears
