Summary: Radeon 9600 and DRI not working on my PowerPC64 machine
   Product: DRI
   Version: XOrg CVS
  Platform: Other
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
  Severity: major
  Priority: P2
 Component: General
AssignedTo: dri-devel@lists.sourceforge.net
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello,

I do have a problem with my Apple PowerMac G5 running Gentoo Linux/PPC64 with
64bit userland. The machine has a Radeon 9600. The problem is that dri does not
work very stable. I can reproduce this with kernel 2.6.18-rc2 and kernel
2.6.17.7. I am using X version 7.1.

Sometimes X does not even start: the screen turns black and then the fans of my
machine begin to spin faster and faster (ssh into the machine and I see X uses
100% of my CPU). not every time my monitor sais 'no signal'.

If X starts then
a) the upper thirt of the screen is black, but I can move the mouse.
b) X starts normal, but after a while (sometimes minutes, sometimes hours) the
machine freezes. Sometimes I can move the cursor for a while, but I am not able
to click anything. then later even moving the mouse will not work. (ssh into
the machine and I see X uses 100% of my CPU)

I'll attach my xorg.conf, strace output and the terminal output when I execute
a plain 'X' as root.

(MGA) DRI locking

2006-07-28 Thread Tilman Sauerbeck
Hi,
I'm trying to fix bug 7265, but I'm stuck.

I added some debugging output to the xserver and the mga driver and I
attached the interesting parts of the lock.

What's interesting is that DRILock()/DRIUnlock() are continually called
about every second even if no DRI client is connected. This might be due
to XAA rendering though, and it seems XAA cannot be disabled without
disabling DRI, too.

As my test case, I started glxinfo in a xterm (which hangs in
mgaGetLock(), as expected). This is line 18 in the log.

At the end of the log, you'll see that DRIDoBlockHandler() results in
another DRIUnlock() call, although the lock isn't currently held.

Now, the problem is that I cannot figure out why and how
DRIDoBlockHandler() is called. It's assigned to the DRI
inforec-wrap.BlockHandler, but I don't see when it's called.
To make things worse, I cannot get a backtrace either... attaching GDB
or using xorg_backtrace() will crash the server.

Any idea what's wrong with the locking here?
Hints on when DRIDoBlockHandler is called or why it can be called even
though the DRI lock isn't held are appreciated :)

Thanks,
Tilman

First of all, this is an fglrx driver bug. Since that driver is closed source
and not supported by Xorg, you should not report it here. Sorry that ATI support
sucks so much. :-/

There is an unofficial bugzilla for fglrx at http://ati.cchtml.com/. I believe
bug #239 there is the same problem you're experiencing. See also
http://wiki.cchtml.com for more community information related to fglrx.

Anyway, there is a possible workaround. If you're using GDM you can set

  AlwaysRestartServer=true

in /etc/gdm/gdm.conf. Other display managers may have similar options. Hope this
helps.

I'm closing this bug as NOTOURBUG.

i830 register combiner details and enhancements

2006-07-28 Thread Jonathan Brandmeyer
I am developing an OpenGL program targeted at GNU/Linux, and I'm trying
to make sure that it works well on i830 and higher graphics chips. I've
been going over the source code for the DRI driver trying to figure out
exactly what the hardware is capable of. I'm confused on a few points,
and I think that there may be an area here that I can help improve.

First, exactly how many texture units are supported by hardware?
glGetInteger( GL_MAX_TEXTURE_UNITS) returns 8, however
i830_texblend.c:i830SetTexEnvCombine() only seems to allow GL_TEXTURE
and GL_TEXTURE[0-3].

i830_reg.h suggests that the hardware supports MAD instructions, and
there is some mumbling about partially supporting
GL_ATI_register_combine3 in i830_texblend.c. I'm interested in adding
this support, but I need to know what the order of arguments is for all
of the TEXBLENDOP_MODULATE_{2X_,4X_,}AND_ADD insns.

TEXBLENDARG_ACCUM. The i810 programmer's guide mentions support for an
accumulator target as both a source and destination for the blend unit's
insns, but I can't figure out the details. Is it just a temporary
register, or does it automatically add anything stored into it? I've
looked at the 855GM/GME GMCH datasheet, but it was way too high-level
for me to gain any programming information from it.

Finally, if the hardware really supports up to 8 insns, swizzling, MAD,
SUB, ADD, MUL, ADD_SIGNED, BLEND, DOT, and has two GP regs (CURRENT and
ACCUM), would it be worth it to support GL_ARB_fragment_shader? Not
many programs could link and run, but it would be more convenient (for
the programmer) than using ARB_register_combine + part of
ATI_register_combine3. I'd be willing to help with this if someone can
point me in the direction of Mesa/DRI's GLSL architecture docs.

Thanks,
-Jonathan Brandmeyer

It seems (I may be wrong, of course) that DRI driver for ATI IGP320M chipset
has some bugs... Is there place where I can ask for help? There are few
problems, I will list them in my priority order:

1. X server often crashes when running BRLCAD (CAD freeware). Other OpenGL
programs can also crash server to the point that keyboard is locked. Kernel is
still running and reboot is possible when I log in from the network.

2. GoogleEarth window is fast but flickering when X server is in 16bpp mode. OK
but a little bit slow when in 24bpp mode, however, GoogleEarth requires some
trick (see attachment GEbeta4fix.tar.gz).

3. FlightGear runs slow (like no hardware acceleration) with X server in 24bpp
mode, much faster in 16bpp mode.

Re: (MGA) DRI locking

IIRC it's due to locking oddities in the mga DRI driver, I'm sure
Kristian knows more about it.

Hints on when DRIDoBlockHandler is called or why it can be called even
though the DRI lock isn't held are appreciated :)

Are you familiar with the X server's function wrapping mechanism?
DRI(Do)BlockHandler() is the DRI module's wrapper of the X server's
BlockHandler screen hook, which it calls whenever it has run out of
requests and goes to sleep for a bit. For symmetry, there's a DRILock()
call in DRIDoWakeupHandler(), which is a wrapper for the hook the X
server calls before it starts processing new requests. The idea is for
the DRI module to automatically hold the lock whenever the X server
might need hardware access.

Hope this helps,

Re: (MGA) DRI locking

2006-07-28 Thread Felix Kühling
Am Donnerstag, den 27.07.2006, 22:08 +0200 schrieb Tilman Sauerbeck:
 Hi,
I'm trying to fix bug 7265, but I'm stuck.

DRIDoBlockHandler is called from DRIBlockHandler:

if (pDRIPriv
pDRIPriv-pDriverInfo-wrap.BlockHandler)
(*pDRIPriv-pDriverInfo-wrap.BlockHandler)(i, blockData,
pTimeout, pReadmask);

DRIBlockHandler in turn is registered in DRIExtensionInit using
RegisterBlockAndWakeupHandlers. Block and Wakeup handlers are called
automatically whenever the server starts and stops processing client
commands.

I just notice that DRIBlockHandler is also called through
__glXDRIleaveServer (glxdri.c), which was introduced in the AIGLX merge.
Could it be that DRIBlockHandler gets called twice when it should only
be called once?

Regards,
  Felix

 Thanks,
 Tilman

Re: i830 register combiner details and enhancements

2006-07-28 Thread Ian Romanick
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Jonathan Brandmeyer wrote:
I am developing an OpenGL program targeted at GNU/Linux, and I'm trying
to make sure that it works well on i830 and higher graphics chips. I've
been going over the source code for the DRI driver trying to figure out
exactly what the hardware is capable of. I'm confused on a few points,
and I think that there may be an area here that I can help improve.

First, exactly how many texture units are supported by hardware?
 glGetInteger( GL_MAX_TEXTURE_UNITS) returns 8, however
i830_texblend.c:i830SetTexEnvCombine() only seems to allow GL_TEXTURE
 and GL_TEXTURE[0-3].

If that's on actual i830 or similar generation such as i845 or i865,
that's a bug. The hardware supports only 4 textures.

i830_reg.h suggests that the hardware supports MAD instructions, and
there is some mumbling about partially supporting
 GL_ATI_register_combine3 in i830_texblend.c. I'm interested in adding
this support, but I need to know what the order of arguments is for all
 of the TEXBLENDOP_MODULATE_{2X_,4X_,}AND_ADD insns.

I don't think anyone knows for sure. It should be easy enough to write
a test program to figure it out experimentally.

The first step to doing this is to write a really basic optimizer that
can combine multiple stages into either MODULATE_AND_ADD or
BLEND_AND_ADD stages. This can free up some stages for expansion of,
for example, GL_MODULATE_SUBTRACT_ATI.

I make some mention of this on my todo list. See
http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/IanRomanickToDo

Some combinations of state will inevitably result in software fallbacks.
 For example, the hardware can't do (tex0 * tex1 - diffuse) * specular *
tex2 dot tex3. Doing that would require 5 stages, and the hardware only
has 4.

There are 4 texture combine stages supported by the hardware. The
result of each combine stage can be stored in either the output or the
accumulator. The accumulator can then be used as a source for a later
combine stage.

This lets you express things like (texture0 * texture1) + (texture2 dot
texture3). The expression texture0 * texture1 would be handled in
the first stage and stored in the accumulator. texture2 dot texture3
would be handled in the second stage and stored in the output. Stage 3
would calculate output + accumulator and store the result in output.

Not

It would be impossible to support GL_ARB_fragment_shader. That
extension requires that values be stored as full-range floating point
values. It also requires that you be able to use calculated values as
texture coordinates.

many programs could link and run, but it would be more convenient (for
the programmer) than using ARB_register_combine + part of
ATI_register_combine3. I'd be willing to help with this if someone can
point me in the direction of Mesa/DRI's GLSL architecture docs.

I have recently migrated to openSUSE 10.1 by way of a new install on a larger

I'm now running Fc5, problem remains. I did try a later ati driver (can't
remember which one). It's my work machine so I can't have it broke too much. I
was going to look at it again with Xorg 7.1, which I believe comes with the ati
6.6.x driver. Seems like FC5 will be getting an update to Xorg 7.1. So I may be
able to try again sooner rather than later.

Things do work fine on my FC4 machine at home, Athlon, Radeon 9200, running dual
head. I can start up a second X server with DRI and play Quake III. Maybe it's
some 64bit issue...

Cheers,

Andrew
