Dear DSpace Community,

On behalf of the DSpace Committers, I would like to formally announce that
DSpace 1.7.0 is now available!

DSpace 1.7.0 can be downloaded immediately at either of the following
locations:

* SourceForge: https://sourceforge.net/projects/dspace/files/
* SVN: http://scm.dspace.org/svn/repo/dspace/tags/dspace-1.7.0/

In addition, you are welcome to try out DSpace 1.7.0 on
http://demo.dspace.org/ and continue to provide any early feedback you may
have.

Most of you are already aware that 1.7.0 represents the first "time-based"
release for DSpace. In order to decrease delays in releasing new features
and increase transparency, the DSpace developers decided to schedule 1.7.0
in advance and base its features on what they were able to complete within
that timeframe. Despite the fact that 1.7.0 had a much tighter timeframe
than previous major releases, the developers have managed to include some
significant new features, numerous bug fixes and performance improvements.
 We hope to continue this trend in all future releases.

== New Features and Improvements in 1.7.0 ==
* Mirage XMLUI Theme: a new clean, professional looking theme for XMLUI with
increased browser compatability, easier customization and enhanced
performance.

* DSpace Discovery: a faceted browse/search interface for XMLUI that gives a
deeper and more intuitive look at repository content with auto completion
for search and context sensitive browse suggestions.
For a informational video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abRSXTUEwws

* Archival Information Package (AIP) Backup & Restore process: allows for a
backup of DSpace into a generic METS-based structure, that can be used to
migrate DSpace content to another system that supports AIPs (DSpace or
non-DSpace).
For more information visit:
https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSDOC/AIP+Backup+and+Restore

* Curation Administration User Interface: allows for a series of curation
tasks (profile bitstream formats, virus scan, check for required metadata)
to be performed on objects in DSpace.
For more information visit:
https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSDOC/Curation+System

* PowerPoint text extraction, for searching within PowerPoint slides

* Improved Google Scholar indexing on metadata and PDF content

* Improved performance and scalability of DSpace: the code has been
thoroughly analyzed by a suite of code quality tools and there have been
considerable performance gains with regard to item ingestion and indexing
speed

* Automated Unit Testing of core code: helps the developers ensure the core
code of DSpace is as bug free and stable as possible

For more details on the above improvements and a complete list of 1.7.0
modifications, please refer to the Version History or the Release Notes:

== 1.7.0 Documentation ==
The DSpace documentation has been migrated to a wiki-based version:
https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSDOC

The wiki-based documentation will make it easier for the community to help
make updates and corrections. PDF and HTML copies of the Documentation are
still distributed with the software. In addition, they can also be
downloaded from:
http://www.dspace.org/latest-release/

== 1.7.0 Acknowledgments ==

The DSpace application would not exist without the hard work and support of
the community. Thank you to the many developers who have worked very hard to
deliver all the new features and improvements. Also thanks to the users who
provided input and feedback on the development, as well those who
participated in the testathons. Many thanks to Jeffery Trimble from
Youngstown State University for helping to migrate the DSpace documentation
to a wiki-based version and for his continued improvements. Additionally I
would like to thank Tim Donohue of DuraSpace for ensuring that DSpace 1.7
went off without a hitch.

A detailed listing of all known people/institutions who contributed directly
to DSpace 1.7.0 is available in the Preface of the DSpace Documentation:
https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSDOC/Preface
(If you contributed and were accidentally not listed, please let us know so
that we can correct it!)

We are also currently planning a DSpace 1.7.0 Webinar to take place in
January 2011. This webinar will concentrate on new features and improvements
provided by 1.7.0. More information to follow.

As always, we are happy to hear back from the community about DSpace --
please let us know what you think of 1.7.0!

Have a happy holiday season!
