Nate,
Any chance you will be doing Dayton this year ?

If you are installing a D*Star repeater stack (2m 440cm modules) can you
use a single dual band antenna for both modules or do you need separate
antennas for every module in the stack?
That somewhat depends on your preferences. If you are seeking
decent performance then I would suggest
Bob,
All good advice, however I would like to add that there
are a number of duplexers out there that do both pass
and reject such as TX/RX and Wacom (both the same
company now I believe) and there are some other ones
as well. I like the TX/RX vari-notch design where all
cans in the
Bob,
Yes, you are right. Many people have found that the D-Star
systems need more isolation than a similar FM system especially
the UHF units. There has been much discussion about that. I was
only trying to add that the pass/reject type filters do offer far
more protection from things outside
Some coordinators have in some areas have taken out
either simplex or packet channels or a combination of
both to accomodate the new growth in new repeaters
that was brought on by the introduction of D-Star.
The problem with the paper repeaters is that people
are not helping the coordinators
also do analog
FM just fine (including FM narrow). When you switch a
repeater it forces the issue (no choice) and it seems that most
hams will resist this like you were taking their radios away.

Now, if you just want the radio to think it knows where it's at, that
is fairly easy. Simply get any pic project board with a serial port on
it and set the port to whatever speed the data needs to be ( I forget
what the 2820 wants when you send in GPS strings to the back of
the radio) and have it
Jim,
If you can run a cable to the radio from a GPS why can't you run
the little tiny wire for the GPS antenna ?? The radio comes (if you
buy the DStar ready one) with a 20+ foot cable attached to the GPS
antenna. So my question is, if you can get a serial cable to the radio,
why not just make
Well Neil, come on over to Grand Rapids, MI USA and I will
gladly show you WX8GRR that is easily workable on an HT
at 40 miles out. Mobile coverage is well beyond that at any time
of day or night, and it's an Icom box. It was a different approach
for us to buy something like that as our group
And let's not forget the new thing that G2 brought to us with
multicasting. when's the last time you used that ?

Callsign routing is part of the D-STAR protocol, linking is not.
Linking is an application at this point, perhaps in the future there
will be a
David,
I think the idea is to first emulate ICOM so that eventually
we can get away from the poor design. This is already
being done succesfully. On another note, that is another
reason to have an isolated network. Right now many people
are enjoying the DSTAR network the way it is. Having a

Yes, that is how a properly implimented network works. You have
I have to agree with Pete on this one. After trying several serial dongles
with Vista to run an Icom R1000 we resolved the problem by using
the driver specified by FTDI and it now works flawlessly. I also use
a serial dongle to program telephone systems, and once again it was
the same problem
In my opinion you are way off base. All they are asking is that
you help support the club. But, it appears that you too have the
typical attitude found among hams that repeaters are free and towers
grow everywhere like trees, and they all come complete with feedline
and antennas, free
Unfortunately the number one thing I hear over and over again is
that DStar is too expensive or, I don't want to spend my money
on that. Anyone that has been folowing DStar for more than 90
days has heard it, and those of us that have been around for awhile
are pretty much so tired of hearing
