To the best of my knowledge, periodic boundaries are not implemented for the 
free-flow models and thus currently just ignored.
Please be so kind and open an issue (feature request) on GitLab 
(https://git.iws.uni-stuttgart.de/dumux-repositories/dumux/issues 
<https://git.iws.uni-stuttgart.de/dumux-repositories/dumux/issues>).
I currently don’t have time to look at it, but maybe some other developer?
