Re: [dwm] Xinerama and multihead support

2008-02-15 Thread David Edmondson
hg tip doesn't work well at all on Xinerama for me. I have ~20
applications. By default they all end up on a single monitor
(expected), but they aren't tiled properly. No window was placed in
the master area and the stacking region was not full (there was a
large gap). The status bar seems wrong - on monitor 1 (which has no
applications), tag 1 is shown as 'full' (solid square).

Is it supposed to work better than this?

Nicolas, i haven't seen this use case yet, but it's a good point.

I have hg tip running now and no crashes yet. I'm glad that i can test
arg's interpretation of this issue.
Well, now i'm sure david's version is beneficial, because it allows
you to control a lot only by tagging. It's natural and a lot simpler.

You won't need:

1. no new command (to move windows to another monitor).
2. no new memory in your brain (selecting a tag will bring everything
you associate with it to your view).

Perhaps it's only my limited memory;). I definitely don't easily
remember the tag AND monitor of the apps I'm trying to get on view.
But now it is like having 9 additional tags, all named in a confusing
way.

Now finally, my proposal:
Normally each monitor should show everything associated with the selected tag.
If there are multiple selected tags, dwm should regard these as one
monitor, so that we can use the whole capabilities of Xinerama. Here
you are, Nicolas.

[dwm] Xinerama and multihead support

Hi there, more and more I get straight to a 4.8 release. The hg
tip is still experimental, but Xinerama works for me already:

After other tests, it seems the bug occurs when you launch xrandr, it
seems to be the minimal condition.

Other remark; I enjoy the screen system (one application per screen),
but this isn't suitable at all for some applications, such as blender,
which are a lot more confortable on my full display (2800x1050).
Is there a way to tell dwm to let some applications use the full
display, and not only the current screen ?

I'm not totally sure about all design goals yet. Let's postpone
the discussion after the 4.8 release, ok?

Kind regards,

So THAT'S the reason why you insert Xinerama! You got two Monitors for
yourself!

BTW: I like the new Layout for the website! Looks fresh, more like dwm.
Except for the dwm logo, which has still the old look. The checkout of
the new diri is possible. At least, i were able to do this :)

!!!OFF TOPIC!!! But, it looks like you develop DWM and WMII at the same time.
Do you use
both, depending on what you're developing now? !!!END OFF TOPIC!!!

I personally don't need Xinerama and it looks like, i won't need it so
fast. But it's cool, that i can safely make a Xinerama setup, without
some dwm chaos.

Fabio Scotoni

 Kind regards,

Excellent new ! I just installed the mercurial version on my desktop,
and it works pretty well. The display has two 20 monitors in 1400x1050
managed by NVidia's TwinView.

A small problem found: dwm crashed with an X error (request code=54,
error code=4, BadPixmap with X_FreePixmap) when I do this:

- Open Firefox with dmenu (last mercurial version) in the left screen.
- Open an Xterm with alt+enter.
- Run xrandr in the term.
- Exit the term with 'exit'.

Hope it will help.

As you wish :)
It was nothing but a simple info, since without that, all people who
use multihead for some large application won't be able to use dwm.

Let's wait 4.8 !

 Kind regards,

Ouups, retested, and the bugs raises just when I run xrandr, so no need
to exit the term.
