I use crimp connectors on RG-58 size cable and have never had a failure, but I 
haven't used them outside.  The tool was about $50, I think, so it doesn't take 
many pigtails to pay back its cost.  You can, of course buy lower loss coax.  
My club has dozens of jumpers in our repeaters.
 
One of the standard sources for iindustry is Pasternack, but they are 
expensive.  
 
It would be great for several hams, or a club, to share a crimper.  
 
RF Connectors is a relatively cheap connector source.
