Shortened "coiled" dipoles and verticals exhibit a large amount
of inductive reactance. Even if the overall impedance is 50 Ohms,
the large voltages on the feed line cause by the large inductive reactive
component can result in ATT or final transistor failure. Never

Measuring tape antennas have also been around for years;
nothing new there, and they have the added advantage of letting you know exactly
how long they are.
Regardless, since I'm not the one interested in building a

Why not use a cheap metal measuring tape? Original
"slinky(s)" are collectables and may be worth enough money to
buy a real antenna. :-)))

Dave,
I've never heard of a vertical slinky, but I have heard of
horizontal dipoles made out of them. So long as you have some way of
keeping the slinky(s) suspended vertically (using a long dowel or set of dowels,
or suspending the top from a skyhook attached to a tree branch come to mind
I have heard of them used in a horizontal plane. Knowing the
characteristics of the slinky you would have to have some method of keeping
the rings extended in the vertical position . . . gravity would cause the
links to collapse to the bottom.

For comments,
Has anyone ever thought of using a couple of
slinky's to make a vertical antenna? I located some slinky's and plan to
construct a dipole either fed with coax or open wire feeder. Considering I
don't have alot of antenna room to fool around with, I hope it'll
work.
