[DX-CHAT] query good island antennas?

2006-07-13 Thread Charles Harpole

DXers:
Please offer advice about the best DX antennas (for receive and/or transmit)
situated on small low-lying islands surrounded by lots of salt water.

Pse comment on relative effectiveness as located (1) on sand beach and near
or in water or (2) on sandy soil 100 meters or more from water. No existing
structures over one-story are available. Few if any natural supports (like
trees) are available.

I seem to remember one island DXpedition used all verticals and reported
being heard better than being able to hear.

Thanks for any help. 73, HS0ZCW

[DX-CHAT] VU4AN Cards

2006-07-13 Thread John C. Maikisch

Now that some of the VU4AN cards are being
received, does anyone know if the ARRL is accepting them for DXCC credit (i.e. -
is the "proper documentation" in hand)?

Re: [DX-CHAT] HISTORIC MORSE CODE RADIO STATION KPH RETURNS TO THE AIR

HISTORIC MORSE CODE RADIO STATION KPH RETURNS TO THE AIR FOR NIGHT OF
 NIGHTS VII

In the seventh annual event that has become known as the Night of
Nights, historic Morse code radio station KPH will return to the air
in commemoration of the last commercial Morse message sent in the United
States. Frequencies and reception report information for all stations
 appear below.
KPH, the ex-RCA coast station located north of San Francisco, will
return to the air for commemorative broadcasts on 12 July at 1701 PDT
(13 July at 0001 GMT), 7 years and one minute after the last commercial
Morse transmission in the US. These on-the-air events are intended to
honor the men and women who followed the radiotelegraph trade on ships
and at coast stations around the world and made it one of honor and skill.

Wow, was that music to my ears! I could hear KPH, WLO and KSM. For some
reason I couldn't hear KLB or NMC on any frequency. But it brought back
memories of when I first got into ham radio 40 years ago. I got my code
speed up by copying those stations and others such as NAA, WOO, NSS, NPG
back in the 60's.

Transmissions are expected to continue until at least midnight PDT
(0700GMT). Veteran Morse operators, including former KPH staff members,
will be on duty at the receiving station at Point Reyes, CA listening
for calls from ships and sending messages just as they did for so many
years before Morse operations were shut down.

They all seemed to QRT at 0500Z. At least I got to listen in for a
couple hours. I hope they do the same next year.
