Re: [DX-CHAT] my last on Ten Tec woes
Almost every manufacturer extant today only makes a limited number of ASIC's etc. for their equipment. The question is how many? I worked in the consumer electronics repair business for a while and found that even Sony, which is one of the best when it comes to making older parts available, eventually ran out of some things. So I guess the question is how long did Ten-Tec estimate that their older rigs would be around and what would be the failure rate of the components, and how many did they think they needed to make extra when they had the parts made? Maybe they underestimated. That's show business. 73, Zack W9SZ On Mon, 29 Oct 2007, Charles Harpole wrote: For orphans, look at T T web site for a list. Re: [DX-CHAT] my last on Ten Tec woes
Charlie.in all fairness I must say that I recently called Ten Tec regarding my old venerable Triton IV which had served me so well through the years and was pleased to find out that they do indeed have replacement parts and continue to service that model after 30 years or more. 73 Norm K1AA - Original Message - From: Charles Harpole [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED]; dx-chat@njdxa.org Sent: Monday, October 29, 2007 12:05 AM Subject: [DX-CHAT] my last on Ten Tec woes There is not a little of any more of my story. When a company can no longer source a parts, he can no longer sell that part, be he Sony or Ten Tec. Now, customer service is another story. RE: [DX-CHAT] my last on Ten Tec woes
Sorry Charles. I regret that you had a bad experience with one person at Ten Tec. But to extrapolate from that doom for the company is a bit much. Further, I must take exception to your constant use of the term orphans. That is not only unfair but a total misrepresentation. To me, an orphan radio is one that has had all support (including repair) abandoned by it's manufacturer... sometimes because the manufacturer is no longer in the radio business. Just like every other manufacturer, Ten Tec has discontinued models over the years, due to poor sales; replaced by an updated unit; or an inability to obtain certain components. (For example, one factor in the replacement of the Orion with the Orion II is that the Orion's main processor has been discontinued by Motorola; word is that they stockpiled a good number of spares just in case, but to continue building new Orion's with no hopes of future direct-drop-in replacement CPU's would be, at best, unwise). Keeping in mind that some parts just plain are no longer available, my personal experience has been that if they have the part, Ten Tec will service their radios. Period. That's something that the bigger manufacturers can not always do. As I've previously mentioned, to pick on Kenwood, certain components are no longer available for my TS-140S, and I've been told not to bother them with requests for factory service. Yet my much older Ten Tec Corsair can be sent in for repairs at any time. So which rig is the orphan? To summarize: Do you have an issue with TT Service? Yes. Which you need to take up with them. Making inaccurate statements about the company on this and other reflectors does not help your cause. 73 -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Charles Harpole Sent: Monday, October 29, 2007 12:05 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED]; dx-chat@njdxa.org Subject: [DX-CHAT] my last on Ten Tec woes There is not a little of any more of my story.
