It has to do with the current state of technology, what it can provide, and what it should provide. There's also no need to talk about spark transmitters or paper logs, either. Perhaps this is a fluke, but if not, something is seriously wrong with the system. As a former big gun in a good location, now a little pistol in a bad location, I can say I find the current state of DXing very discouraging. The instant bedlam generated by the Cluster and skimmer networks makes it very difficult for the little guys. The other big factor is the need for so many to work every band-mode combination. While I can understand wanting a QWSO on each band and mode, is EVERY combination necessary? For example, if you worked them on 20 SSB, 40 CW, and 15 RTTY, do you also feel obligated to fill in the 20 CW and 20 RTTY slots, too? If so, why? Fortunately, there's not much I need any more, so I haven't even bothered chasing most of the DXpeds in the last few years. I disagree. The last day of the Yemen DXpediition was the first day I heard them well here in Colorado. There were still lots of callers. Fortunately, I didn't need it, so I never got into the pileups. ARRL created this mess when they expanded DXCC to include individual band awards. There are plenty of little guns and those who don't live in propagationally-favorable locations left out in the cold on many DXpeditions because many guys have the need and are sufficiently bored with their lives to chase them on 15+ band-modes. I used WF5E in the past, when I was actively chasing DX. My return rate was pretty good, though some cards took a few years. Be aware that there are QSL managers and DX stations that will not respond to QSLs sent through Les. He has a list of them on his web page. I know someone whose son is a supr. with USPS. I posed the question to him about writing routing info like Via France or Via Japan on an envelope and whether it makes any difference. Here's what he said, FWIW: My son went with this to Washington. Apparently, there is a large book called the International Mail Manual. According to whomever Dave talked to, there is NO way that the public can request or demand the route that something is to be shipped internationally. In other words, it is at the discretion of the postal system as to how it gets wherever it is going. I read that as if it was leaving say Washington, D.C.---it could fly out from there and go one route. But, if leaving say California, it might go another route. However the particular regional distribution center has it set up. For example---our mail goes by truck to Baltimore---and then out from there. I sent a card to YU7GMN via buro in 2003 with no reply. I've never sent a card to V51AS despite 20+ QSOs because he is a well-known QSL deadbeat. I don't buy his bad mail service excuse. It appears he's a graduate of the FR5DX School of QSLing - send just enough cards so people will keep trying, sending more green stamps each time. If the mail service is, in fact, the problem, there are plenty of volunteer QSL managers around the world, in countries with reliable mail service, willing to help. One doesn't have to be a rocket scientist to know that's the way to go if the mail service is really the problem. There are DXpeditions of V5 every now and then. (3) If you've not got a dark coloured QSL card, shove some carbon paper in there, so the contents aren't visible if it's held to the light (4) try to fold the return envelope so it doesn't look like a return envelope - this is a dead giveaway. Following these, I have a pretty decent return rate from V51AS I'd be surprised if there are such mail problems in Serbia, but YU7GMN is a club station, so mail probably sits there for a while. They're probably more interested in operating/antenna projects etc. Do you know which op you worked? You could probably try him??? Whilst we're on the subject, has anyone received QSLs from XE1KK? I have a feeling it goes via France, anyway. Since Reunion is a French possession, why would it go any other way? The mail travels via airplane and Air France has most of the flights in and out of there. I wonder if the via instructions are simply ignored as irrelevant. Kinda like sending something via Fedex Express. Whether it's going to a neighboring state or across the country, it still goes via Memphis. OTOH, I wonder if routing instructions on an envelope to an independent country, such as JT , makes a difference. [DX-CHAT] Who to contact for corporate sponsorship?
In the past, myself and Ilya, KE7OPG, participated in the IARU HST (High Speed Telegraphy) competition. Some of you may remember my presentation at the Dayton Contest Forum a few years ago and article I wrote for QST. I was recently contacted by a young ham (age 13), Cal, K0DXC, who has been licensed for 3 years and is in the 45-50 WPM range already! He expressed an interest in participating in the next HST, which is tentatively scheduled for Sept. 2009 in Bulgaria. All the participants, with the exception of the US hams, have been sponsored by their national societies, including transportation, room and board, and entry fees. ARRL, while submitting the application for the US team to participate, does not cover any expenses. Cal, because of his age, would need to travel with a family member, and there are the other US participants who wouldn't mind some financial assistance either. As various radio manufacturers, clubs, foundations, etc. sponsor DXpeditions, I wonder if anyone has any thoughts, or contacts, to arrange sponsors for the HST competition? Another thing to consider - CW ops may be getting older in NA, but in E. EU, they are still going strong with new young recruits. When I participated in the IARU High Speed Telegraphy competition a few years ago, I was very surprised by the number of kids (YLs too!) participating. As an example, check out some of the RUFZ scores at http://www.rufzxp.net/toplist.htm Score #1 by LZ2CWW, a YL under 16 yo, has a top speed of 745 CPM (which equals 149 WPM!!) On a serious point, I felt that it was always the older members of the hobby who wished to preserve cw as an entry criterion for the HF bands - something which I always considered to be ridiculous (no, I'm NOT trying to re-open the code/no-code debate). Interestingly, I always said that there was no way I'd ever mess about operating cw, and only did the test to get my ticket. The mode held no interest for me at all. But then one day I bought an all-mode TNC at a hamfest - actually to send/receive RTTY - so I hooked it up to my computer and started to use it. Incidentally it also worked for cw, so it rather got me into using the mode on the bands just out of interest. Strangely, I look at my log book these days and I'd say that cw is the mode that I use the most. As you imply, it's probably an age thing. I still send from the keyboard, though use Human Brain Mark #1 for decoding. More grey hairs - of which I now have many - means more cw operating, perhaps? You need to think about it and decide why to send them in at all. In almost 40 years, I've only sent in for Mixed and RTTY. All the band-mode stuff I just track for my own satisfaction in DX4WIN. I don't need any more wallpaper. I don't even bother sending for QSLs for the band-mode stuff - only if it's a brand new one (which there aren't any unless you count FJ) or a new RTTY country (3 or so.) Interesting question. Personally, I only turn the amp and xcvr on when I use them and turn them off when I'm done. I posed this question to Krassy at Acom a few years ago (I have a 2000A) and he recommended turning it off if it will sit idle for more than 30 minutes. OTOH, my computer is left on from the time I get home from work until bedtime. FR5DX is a sly dog. He sends just enough QSLs to entice the DXer to try and try again, using the mail loss or theft excuse. He's had many volunteers over the years offer to manage his cards, all turned down. Also, unlike some third world countries, FR is a department (similar to a state or county) of France, and uses the same postal system used in Paris or Marseilles. IMO, he's an unethical profiteer. I got cards from Herik for both 80m and 160m using the above and he also helped me get a card from FR7BP/T (now SK) for an old 10m QSO in 1980. Herik is a good guy but don't blame him if you cannot follow his QSL directions. Whoever said Herik does not work CW is wrong. I worked him on 160 CW from both Colorado and NC. We were well aware of the via France issue. There just were too many who didn't get a response for it to be explained away by mail pilfering. When you mentioned poor QSLer in the 1990s, *everyone* rolled their eyes and muttered FR5DX. He had the worst reputation for returning cards I can ever recall. You were lucky to get the cards you did, and maybe because they were 80 and 160 he treated them special. I don't know. All I do know is that the top dog DXers of the day who knew all the QSLing tricks to minimise pilfering, etc. each had their FR5DX horror stories. They have not been produced in the US since the 1960s and can no longer be redeemed for silver. John, I typically get 2 or 3 boxes of cards per year (shipped via UPS.) Being an active contester, I get LOTS of cards. I rarely initiate buro cards. 99.9% of what I receive, and do answer, are contest QSOs. Most of the cards in my last shipment are from 2005 and 2006 which isn't bad at all. The most current cards in this batch are from DL and I.. Last year I received a bunch of 10 year old JA cards, but this FJL card going back 17 years sets the record for me! It must be that the outgoing buros occasionally find a batch of cards that was forgotten or misplaced. I've been receiving buro cards from NJDXA for over 35 years (geeze, I'm getting old...) and service has always been excellent.. Another QSL-related issue is buro mailings. I typically do buro QSLs once a year. If I have enough to send on my own (usually DL, I, and JA), I'll send a 1 lb. package to each of those buros (the rest going to ARRL Outgoing Service for $8/lb.) In the past, that cost $4/lb via surface parcel post. USPS has eliminated surface PP for international, and now ships all by air. This will now cost $10.40/lb - 2 1/2 times the old rate! Be prepared to see a rate increase from ARRL Outgoing buro soon... For me, it's not a question of danger. It's a question of does it make any sense? Here we have a few rocks sticking out of the ocean and the only way to inhabit them is to build scaffolding. This is a stupid country. How is it different from Okino Torishima (aka Baldwin's folly?) Off the top of my head, there are other stupid countries, created by stupid rules. This is not meant to be all inclusive. I'm sure there are others: 4u1un 4u1itu - both for obvious reasons. Otherwise add every embassy and American Indian casino. Swains - a privately owned island becomes an instant country due to a rule change (brings up the frequently bantered topic of a few prominent DXers making countries.) When the stupid rule is corrected, the stupid countries should not remain on the list. To me, it doesn't matter if a country is removed or deleted. [DX-CHAT] Antenna for 30m?
I currently have no antennas for the WARC bands (30,17 and 12.) On occasion, I use my 80m slopers on 30m and my 40m Yagi on 17 and 12. They work, but not well. Looking a propagation into BS7H-land, looks like 30m may be the best shot from the east coast, so I'm thinking maybe I should put up a temporary antenna for that band. I don't want anything permanent as it would mess up the pattern of my tribander stack. I have a single tower with multiple TH7s, a 2 el 40 at the top, and a bunch of wires for 80 and 160. There are no trees anywhere near the tower. Any suggestions on what my best option would be for a temporary 30m antenna fed with coax? Inv vee? 1/2 wave sloper? CW will die a slow death, at least in the US. The no-code license is a dead end. It will be the rare no-coder that takes the time and effort to learn CW and stick with it long enough to become proficient for on the air use (i.e., 25-30 WPM.) As we OFs get older and disappear, nobody will be taking our place on the CW bands. When I was in Macedonia last year, at the High Speed Telegraphy Championship, I was amazed at all the young kids there from eastern EU. Years ago there was no DX Cluster network that announced to the world the instant the rare DX appeared and on what frequency. Also, in the old days, there was no implied guarantee of a QSO, or multiple band-mode QSOs, with each DXpedition. You had to tune, tune tune, be in the right place at the right time and hope propagation was favorable. Sometimes luck played a role, too. Now, if someone doesn't work a DXpedition, they start insulting the operators (or QRMing the operation) for ignoring their part of the world. There are many reasons for that, too many to list here. Suffice, when rude behavior is tolerated in other parts of society, it gets reflected on the bands too. And in some situations, the testosterone (or equivalent) takes over. Sometimes, some of those win at any and all costs take no prisoners hams will do anything to make sure that THEY make the contact, and will sometimes prevent YOU from doing so -- so that they can claim I WON and, by default, you lost. Yes, Frank is the problem. Frank is the problem because he knows (or claims) that mail is unreliable in his country. Frank should engage the services of a QSL manager in a country with reliable mail service. There are always plenty of volunteers. Guys like him have no excuse. My advice is work someone else. The schmuck should be punished. It seems pretty obvious to me that it was someone else who was wanting to go, but didn't have the right connections to get approval. Then, in a selfish, sour grapes move, he saw to it that if he couldn't go, nobody would.
