It ain't gonna change. That's how it's been for the 25 years I've been

The bigger question is: what can we do constructively to improve

I have plenty of Q's (80 through 10) since I was licensed in the
mid-1980s, but still need one for my favorite band -- 18 mHz. I'll be
in there looking. My amp hasn't been hooked up for over 2 years, and I
don't intend to do so now (I'll get it in line for P5, though).

[DX-CHAT] How we did it before the internet

2005-12-17 Thread harris ruben
How? We had a small group of maybe 6 guys, and a list of countries
(not BAND countries, just new ones overall). We had a 2M simplex
freq that we all listened to, and called each other there.
Occasionally a single jingle was used to alert a non-monitoring
member of the group.

If a RARE ONE came up, we split up and each guy monitored one band in
and around the expected place and called on 2M if and when we heard
our new one. Only after we all worked it (or ran out of monitors) did
we put it up on packet. Then we leaned back and listened for the
hyenas fighting over the scraps.

We really worked for these Q's, as a group.

Done.

[DX-CHAT] COUNTIES

2005-12-12 Thread harris ruben

This IS very rare, but it DOES happen:

My own dead-end street crosses the county line. While they actually
live in a different town and county than I do, people on the far side
of the line have the same town mailing address as I do, because it
would be impractical (and confusing) to have the other town's name in
their mailing address (their street is not even accessible from their
town). Thus, they APPEAR to live in a town and county where they do
NOT live.
