Re: [DX-CHAT] Cobwebs at the Russian buro?

2007-06-13 Thread Barry

John,
I typically get 2 or 3 boxes of cards per year (shipped via UPS.) Being
an active contester, I get LOTS of cards. I rarely initiate buro
cards. 99.9% of what I receive, and do answer, are contest QSOs. Most
of the cards in my last shipment are from 2005 and 2006 which isn't bad
at all. The most current cards in this batch are from DL and I.. Last
year I received a bunch of 10 year old JA cards, but this FJL card going
back 17 years sets the record for me! It must be that the outgoing
buros occasionally find a batch of cards that was forgotten or
misplaced. I've been receiving buro cards from NJDXA for over 35 years
(geeze, I'm getting old...) and service has always been excellent..
Sometimes, I wish they'd stop sending them to me :.)

Barry, everyone,

I'm still receiving cards from the top of the last cycle for 6m euro
contacts. I've been tracking cards out and in for 8 years so far.
The general gist is, unless you hit the outgoing buro just before they
unload, you can count on a 2.5 year turn no matter what buro it is
going to. Hitting them just right may shave 3-4 months off the
process. I return cards the way they came, direct/direct buro/buro,
but rubber stamp the buro cards UR card recd from buro and add the
date. If I need an entity, it goes direct or manager. I'm too old to
wait for the buro.

When was the last box of cards from your 2 land buro? Has it been 6
months or more? a year? Every step adds time to the flow. LoTW is a
good step for those who just want confirmations. But I like cards, the
personal notes hams write, and especially the photos some chose for
their card. I am not alone in this. If LoTW would expand to have
printable cards like e-qsl, I believe many more hams would use it. If
e-qsl was allowed to be credited for awards, LoTW would shrivel and
die. So we're stuck with the system as it is.

Sorry that this turned into a rant. Your post set off one of my pet
peeves, the QSL system.

73, May your DX cards arrive with haste.
