Re: [DX-CHAT] ham radio and age

2007-01-17 Thread Dennis Kopecky
Charlie,

Didn't you get any exercise whenever you were stringing up those dipoles and
longwires, either in your backyard, or on some of those fine DX-peditions ?
C'mon, ham radio can give us a fair amount of exercise, maybe not as much as
some hobbies, but walking to the Post Office to mail or pick up the QSL cards
from the Post Box, and often a lengthy jaunt around all the tables at a
hamfest, while it didn't work up a sweat, sure was good for us ! Or maybe just
measuring out the wire for those dipoles, and then tweaking them to get them on
frequency certainly was always a step in the right direction. All you have to
do is remember how many real or simulated emergency drills, like Field Day,
that you participated in, and I think you'll remember all the hard work and
exercise you got running back and forth to gas up the generators, and some of
the other things that went into Field Day, like getting that temporary tower
and beam up and down ... .

Now that you think about it, how many other aspects of ham radio got a little
bit of exercise into you ? I'll bet everyone of us can think about some events
in our long careers as ham radio operators, while not happening every day,
were memorable, nonetheless, for how good we felt after all the work that went
into getting that station up and running, because there was exercise and
physical effort that went into it !

73,
Dennis Kopecky, WJ2R

The process of getting older can be slowed a bit via uses of ham radio:

  1. Having goals to look forward to like DXCC and IOTA, and county
  hunting.
  2. Mental exercises like CW and solving circuit problems, reading and
  making schematics, etc.
  3. Avoid isolation. have rag chews and attend Hamfests and club meetings
  4. Having someone to depend on and that depands on u like skeds and
helping a ham friend or being an Elmer.
and, last but not least, EXERCISE like walking to the back 40 to check
  on the remote switch box.

Lacking a back 40, ham radio lets us down in the exercise factor but
then what serves every need in life? Good health to all DXers, 73.

BTW, some doctor ham should write a full article about these items for QST
  or CQ ?

I'm afraid it can cause kidney damage. Ever had a run going in the last
hour

of a contest and realized that you drank one soda too many?

You forgot a few:

1. Walking to the shack from the kitchen.
2. Tuning your equipment.
3. Sending CW with a straight-key
4. Yelling your call when attempting to break a pile-up

3 and 4 can certainly get your cardio vascular system going! :-))
