Re: [DX-NEWS] LOTW still off-line

2012-11-08 Thread Crownhaven
ARRL Information Technology Manager Michael Keane, K1MK, is reporting
that while Logbook of The World (LoTW
http://www.arrl.org/logbook-of-the-world) system is currently down, it
is expected to be back up by 9 AM EST (1400 UTC) on Friday, November 9.
While the system is temporarily down, radio amateurs are not able to
access LoTW or upload their logs, Keane explained. No data has been
lost, and everyone's records are intact. We understand the problem and
we are in the process of restoring service to LoTW. Since both the
Logbook of The World service and the Online DXCC
http://www.arrl.org/news/online-dxcc-application-to-debut-april-2
service are connected to the ARRL Awards System, radio amateurs are not
able to access either service until the system is restored. We apologize
for any inconvenience this may cause, and want to assure the amateur
community that the ARRL is working diligently to restore service to
these popular programs.

From the ARRL Letter...

Look guys... I know that Logbook being down is unfortuante, and it's
a pain, but things like this happen sometimes, despite the best
intentions, procedures, precautions, and backups. Just ask any other
IT professional... we've all dealt with situations like this (or
worse) at one time or another, given enough time in the field.

Wild speculation isn't going to help any.
It is unfortunate that DX World published the claim that ~45% of
recent data had been lost -- and I don't blame MM0NDX for publishing
it, as he received the alleged story from two or more sources. But
pending accurate information from the League to the contrary, I would
take any such claim (especially one that vague) with a huge grain of salt.
Now with that all in mind... maybe the time has come to upgrade the
LotW servers related infrastructure. And the user interface could
certainly use a little sprucing up, it's age is showing (though
granted, it's clearly designed to be functional, not pretty). These
things can cost money... lots of money. (Even if you, as a web
designer, donate your time, your time is has value to it). So I'd
humbly suggest that you start thinking of ways to improve the system,
and ways to present them in a positive way to the League... and that
may include outright cash donations or other fund raisers.
That strikes me as a more positive exercise that wringing our hands,
going oh woe is us! LotW is down and otherwise acting like the
proverbial Chicken Little.

The recent NJDX reflector needs clarification re 9N

You may quote the following:

To the DX community: Although banned from posting to the NJDX
Reflector, I still can read it. 9N1AA, Satish's, wife has obtained a
license and the call sign of 9N1MM. Many remember this as Father's
Moran's call but efforts to get it as a club call have not
materialized. Now the call sign is protected by Satish and his wife
who can be sure to use it wisely.

Soon, the new 9N1MM will have a TS-570S donated by American ham
efforts. Thus, Six Meters can be activated from 9N land.
Congratulations to all the new 9N licensees!

Re: [DX-NEWS] QSL from KZ5BB?

Here is another reference to Dr. Henry Stockwell of the Canal Zone,
evidently an amateur entemologist, referred to in the text as a
medical doctor. Scroll to the bottom of the PDF file for the
article. There is a picture of Dr. Stockwell.

And finally, here is Dr. Henry Stockwell, 48 years of experience,
pediatrician in NC. Referenced is a research paper on boy in the Canal
Zone. I'm betting this is your man.

The rest is up to you.

Good luck.
