During this recent go-around of the 7O posting, I have been asked what is acceptable to DX-NEWS and what is the purpose of DX-CHAT.
So here's go. Readers Digest version. DX-NEWS was formed in Aug 1998 to replace to VE7TCP DX reflector that was shut down due to the continually and often lengthy flame wars that erupted after EVERY post, regardless of the content, DX or otherwise. Make a post, have literally dozens of comments. After being overrun by a handful of inDUHviduals, Lyndon, pulled the plug. It was discussed and decided on by a bunch of the NJDXA officers that we could (with help from TECH GURU, W2DEC) restart the list with a proviso...It would be the equivalent of NEWS radio, meaning, we would encourage posts that were NEWSWORTHY... dx-operations, pilot station reports, prop reports, the infrequent?? qsl request and actively discourage that which the old VE7TCP reflector ultimately became, a place where opinionated discussion was not appreciated. We went so far as to poll the "charter" subscribers and by an overwhelming majority of 8 to 1, it was decided that the course as described had been set. Of course, in an unmoderated forum, you can never exclude 100% discussion, and attempts were made to keep the bandwidth to a minimum, much to the consternation, of those that had an opinion on everything ;-) In an effort to keep the ever-growing discussion off the DX-NEWS, DX- CHAT was formed, whereby, once the initial news item was posted, those that wished to continue discussion (oft heated) could go. For the most part it works. Regardless of content and poster, I forward threads to DX-CHAT for continuation of their existence, placing a "notice" if you will in DX-NEWS as to my action(s). I realize that there is a time lag between sending and reading and I allow for that. I do chastise those that post several days later for failure to abide by our request and more often than not, an understanding is reached (until the next time) So..in closing, a few thoughts: The 1st post is always NEWS. 99 99/100% (like Ivory soap) anything following is going to be discussion and should go direct to CHAT. In fact, many 1st posters include that stating that this is information and that discussion should be on CHAT. For that I thank you. Also, DXR is the NEWS radio of the DX reflectors (you give us 22 hours and we'll give you the DX news). We are NOT the TALK radio of DX reflectors. We purposely set this up so that subscribers did not have to wade through 100's of responses to posts about everything other that DX NEWS. Finally, if you have a question/problem/comment, ask either URB or myself. If we don't have the answer, we'll make one up that will satisfy everyone concerned..actually, we'll do everything possible to answer it. We can't please everyone and we don't even try. If you like what we're doing, recommend us to your DX friends. If you don't, the means to unsubscribe are at the bottom of this post. The last thing we'd want is to have unhappy people snarling at us. BTW, you can subscribe and unsubscribe to DX-CHAT simply by going to the indicated website and typing in your e-mail address and hitting a button.
