year with the use of the alternative prefix of Alpha Xray (AX) replacing
the normal Victor Kilo (VK). The mainland of Australia has four different
time zones - and mix of standard and summer time. VK's can substitute the
AX prefix from 0001 hours local time on Sunday, January 26th through 2359
hours on Monday, January 27th. Because this year Australia Day January 26th
falls on a weekend, there is also an official public holiday on Monday,
January 27th. WIA Victoria will be activating AX3WI on the two days using
SSB, RTTY, PSK31 and CW, mainly on the 20, 15 and 10 meter bands. A special
event QSL card will be issued.

prefix will now be used only for club stations in Italy. Andy states in
the past he used the callsign IQ3X in major contests and will now change
his contest callsign to IU3Y. Look for him to be active in the ARRL DX

up for US) or SSB on 1.8430+ from around 1000 to 1500Z starting January
20th. He should be monitoring 50.110 as well. He has not had time to set
up the SSB beacon so don't expect it yet, if at all. He has a 5 element
yagi. He's apparently had about 30 QSOs on 6m with JA so far. He will
be working on assembling the C3SS yagi on Sunday (today). He does not
have any WARC, 80 or 40 antennas. He's not likely to be on those bands.

to celebrate the "WORLD SOCIAL FORUM" taking place in Porto Alegre, in
the south end of Brazil (GS. GF49KX). Operations will be on all the bands.

1245z.

SV/A, MT. ATHOS. Kostas, SV1DPI, has been releasing information this past
week about Monk Apollo, SV2ASP/A. He states that he talked to Monk Apollo
on the phone and Apollo stated he was not active on CW on 21018 kHz on
January 13th. This operation was the work of a SLIM. Also mentioned was
that Apollo has managed to connect his PC with his HF radio, and he is
ready to be on the air in the coming days. Kostas states, "He told me that
he will operate only on CW (not Phone), but I presume that he will operate
RTTY and maybe PSK, since I have sent him the relevant programs." Apollo
will only operate during his freetime. Suggested times are: sometimes after
0530z (this is a short period before he does his daily duties until sunset
[around 1600z during winter in Greece] and between 1700-1900z before he
goes sleep. A request has been made for Apollo to listen for stateside
stations around 0000z on 40 meters. Apollo didn't refuse but informed Kostas
that it is quite difficult. LAST MINUTE UPDATE: Before going to print, a
look at the DXCluster spots showed Apollo checked into a 40 meter net on
7075 kHz at 1011z.
ADDED NOTE: Veronica, W6/IK3ZAW, has been asked by Monk Apollo to forward
the following information to OPDX to repeat the following in order to avoid
confusions and problems with QSL cards:
  * The SY prefix is currently being issued by the Greek ministery to
ordinary Greek stations as a special prefix. None of the recent SYs
is transmitting (or has transmitted) from Mount Athos, except from
SY2A (operated by Monk Apollo a couple of years ago).

  * His CORRECT address is: Monk Apollo, Dochiariou Monastery,
GR-630 87 DAFNI, Mount Athos, GREECE
(He says he is not taking any responsibility for those cards sent
to an address different from the one above.)

VK0, MACQUARIE ISLAND. Those who still need this one may want to watch
the weekend for Peter, VK0MQI, on 21365 kHz after 0000z.

VP6/D, DUICE ISLAND (More Updates). More details were released this past
week on the second Ducie Island DXpedition. Activity is expected on March
8th or 9th, depending upon seas and weather. Stu, WA2MOE, states the
callsign will NOT be released or announced just before the operation
begins to avoid slim activity. The announcement will come from Kan, JA1BK,
or Stu, WA2MOE. The operators will use SSB, CW and RTTY from three sites
on all HF bands, 6 meters and the AO-40 satellite. However, the main bands
to be used will be 20 and 15 meters (QRV 24 hours). The organizer is Kan,
JA1BK. Operators will be DJ9ON/Dieter (CW Op), DK9KX/Hans (CW Op),
FO3BM/Philippe (6m SSB Op), JA1SLS/Hiro (CW/SSB Op), JR2KDN/Yuichi (SSB Op),
N6TQS/Doug (SSB, AO-40 Op), VP6DB/Dave (10m SSB Op), VP6AZ/Mike (10m SSB Op)
and VP6MW/Meralda (17/12m CW/SSB Op). Pilot stations will be: JE2EHP, DJ8NK
and Stu/WA2MOE. QSL Manager is JR2KDN (direct or Bureau). The official
Web page for the second Ducie Island DXpedition is at:
                  http://www.qsl.net/wd4ngb/ducie.htm
Another site with the latest news from JA1BK and pilots, and with E-mail
links to pilots is at: http://www.qsl.net/aa0mz/ducie2.htm

ZK1, SOUTH COOK ISLANDS (IOTA and OM/XYL Op). Look for June/VK4SJ and
Doug/VK4BP to return to the South Cook Islands in April and May to be
active as ZK1AYL and ZK1SIM, repsectively. They will operate from:
     Aitutaki Island - IOTA OC-083, April 27th - May 14th.
     Rarotonga Island - IOTA OC-013, May 15th - May 26th.
ADDED NOTES: June was part of the "All YL DXpedition" that operated from
Gina's on Aitutaki and Rarotonga last September-October 2002. She had
such an enjoyable time that she and her OM Doug vowed to return as soon
as possible. June also said that because of the Solar disturbances while
on Aitutaki, the bands were dead for quite a few days so hopefully those
that missed out last time will not be disappointed this time. Activity
will be SSB only on all bands, 40-10 meters. QSL via VK4SJ, either direct
to CBA with return postage or via the bureau. Direct cards without return
postage will be returned via the bureau. E-QSL's will not be accepted.
June and Doug's address is as follows: June Sim, P.O. Box 406, Caloundra,
Queensland, AUSTRALIA 4551.

ZK2, NIUE. Just a reminder that Bert, PA3GIO, is now active as ZK2GI until
January 26th. Activity will be on 20-10 meters, SSB only. He hopes there
will be propagation to Europe approximately 0800-1400z, peaking around
1100z. QSL (preferably) is by E-mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (No attachment)
Or via the bureau to PA3GIO. Bert states, "I do not accept nor send eQSLs
(i.e. www.eQSL.cc)! I do not read my E-mail when on a DXpedition..."
Direct QSLs go to: Bert vd Berg, Parklaan 38, NL-3931 KK Woudenberg, The
Netherlands, Europe.

ZL, NEW ZEALAND (80m Activity). Winton, ZL3AO, from Christchurch, South
Island, informs OPDX that he feels 80 meters DXing is peaking later in
Christchurch than in previous years (from a ZL perspective). Viewing the
DXCluster spots, OPDX noticed that ZL stations have been active as early
as 1000z and as late as 1500z/plus). Winton states he has been operating
mobile on 80 meters in the DX segment since the 1999 DX season. Others
stations Winton states to look for are Charles/ZL4DX (also in Christchurch)
and Roy/ZL4BO, who has moved to Alexandra (with a dipole strung across a
gully, its effectively 3-meters above ground level of surrounding land,
but about 20-meters above the gully floor). DXCluster spots show ZL1BMW,
ZL1HY, ZL2AL and ZL2AGY have also been active on 80 meters.

ZL1AMO UPDATE. Judy Roush, AA7UC, reported the following late January
12th: "This evening, I am writing to share great news with you. Ron Wright,
ZL1AMO, informs us that after three-months, he has been released from
the hospital and is now home! In Ron's own words, he thanks 'the many
hundreds around the planet who have kept me going over the past months.'
Ron, I think I speak for the entire DX and amateur radio community when
I say, "Welcome home dear friend! The prayers of many have been answered!
God bless and enjoy your reunion with Jeanette and the family!"
