I believe that the following operations were counters: 9U5AV September 1980 (not sure) 4U9U around October 1994 9U5D Feb. 2000 (not sure) Best bet would be to contact Bill Moore at the DXCC Desk of the ARRL. He has published the list of good/valid 9U-operations a number of times. [DX-NEWS] Ducie Island
The main frequencies for this operation are 21.020 for CW and 21.295 for SSB twenty-four hours a day. Note, please, that the expedition will have both fifteen meter frequencies QRV at the same time. Other frequencies are 14.195 for SSB and 14.020 for CW, 28.495 for SSB If conditions on the higher bands are poor, they will use 7045 for SSB and 7005 for CW. The operators will not be QRV on 75/80/160 and on WARC until the last part of the operation. A frequency for CW on WARC will be announced later. The starting date will be released when I have their estimated time of arrival. Here are the set-up plans for the Ducie operation, courtesy of JE2EHP. There will be 5 stations (A.B.C.D and E). A and B stations will share one tent and stations C. D and E each will have their own tents. The team will try to set up the A and B tent about 500 meters from the other tents . This arrangement is not carved in stone; there may be changes depending on the situation. AF2C and I just finished speaking with K9AJ aboard the Braveheart. The vessel is due at Pitcairn tomorrow (Thursday) morning their time and departs for Ducie Thursday evening. Mike estimates that the trip to Ducie will take thirty hours which puts them at Ducie sometime Saturday. Just a reminder...The ONLY official news relative to the Ducie Operation is via the Pilot Station: WA2MOE, Stu JE2EHP, Yoshi AF2C, Jay We are not responsible for any other news than that which is given to us by those who are authorized. All the operators are well...But very tired. They continue to operate almost round the clock on 15m. Questions have bee asked relative to a CW signal on 20 meters during the early morning hours. Unfortunately, this may have been a pirate. It is being checked to see if one of the CW operators may have activated 20m CW, but this is unlikely. Over 1 Qs were made on CW...About 3% were dupes. Not bad! All logs to date have been uploaded...Check the Website. Persistance and patience will get you a contact. Ducie Schedule: 1. VP2DI will cease operation on 27 March and leave the island that evening (Their time) 2. The Ducie team is still plugging away on 15m SSB and CW with a great deal of activity on 12m SSB and CW. Good News: 1. RTTY should begin VERY SOON. Possibly early Saturday (UTC) on 2Øm. 2. 2Ø m SSB activity is presently active. 3. A 8Ø/16Øm antenna is presently being assembled and VP6DI will be heard on these bands within the next 24hrs. (Saturday or Sunday UTC). 4. Kan (JA1BK) was active on 2Øm CW a few days ago...Those who wondered if they worked a pirate lucked-out! 5. Logs: Still no word as to when the logs are going to be updated...The operators stand by their statement relative to the upload, but have no idea as to when the update will take place. 1. The Ducie Team remains very active on 1Ø, 12, and 15m. The pileup remain large on 15m. 2. 16Ø , 8Øm and RTTY - No promises PERIOD. They simply don't know at this time. If you hear them, then they are up. 3. 17m - Look for VP6DI on both CW and SSB early today, Sunday (UTC) 4. Logs...Still no word on the logs and when they will appear on the website: http://www.big.or.jp/~ham/VP6DI/ 5. Stats: At this time there are about 3 Q's in the log. Great job! 6. The team was pleasantly surprised and pleased this evening (UTC) to work the Dean of QSL managers - W3HNK, Joe. 7. The team will work portable calls, but remember, if you work them as a portable, that will appear on your qsl card. QSL all contacts with VP6DI via VE3HO. Pilot Station Request -- It does no good to ask us about when the team will appear on any band or any mode, including RTTY. If we are told, and yes, we are asking, we'll tell you, but our contacts on the island don't know at this time.. The tents are 1,500 feet (500 meters) apart and in the heat they are experiencing, it is difficult to get the information you want and need. As soon as we know when RTTY or 160 will start, we'll tell you. It also does no good to complain that when they are S-9 in Wales they are working JAs. The 15 meter phone operator on Ducie, apparently having had enough of the refusal of Europeans to allow him to work the station he called, closed down. QRT he said. The following is from the ARRL URL: DXCC to Accept P5/4L4FN Contacts for Credit NEWINGTON, CT, Apr 2, 2002--The ARRL has announced it will accept SSB contacts with P5/4L4FN in North Korea (Democratic Peoples' Republic of Korea) for DXCC credit. Operator Ed Giorgadze of the Republic of Georgia, has been active from the capital city of Pyongyang since early last November. Valid SSB contacts from the onset of the P5/4L4FN operation last fall may be submitted for DXCC credit, effective immediately. The ARRL has now received adequate evidence that the operation by Mr. Giorgadze is being conducted with the knowledge and approval of telecommunications officials in Pyongyang, said ARRL Membership Services Manager Wayne Mills, N7NG. At the present time, this approval is limited to SSB operation. Giorgadze has been operating with oral permission from North Korean authorities, but Mills said the ARRL is satisfied on the basis of written information submitted that the P5/4L4FN operation conforms with DXCC rules and should be accepted for credit. Mills cited DXCC Rule 7, which states Any Amateur Radio operation should take place only with the complete approval and understanding of appropriate administration officials. The rule continues, In any case, credit will be given for contacts where adequate evidence of authorization by appropriate authorities exists. Mills said the ARRL Awards Committee met and concurred that the operation should be accredited. The P5/4L4FN operation is not a DXpedition. Giorgadze is employed by the United Nations World Food Program and often spends as much as 12 hours a day on the job, operating in his off hours. It's expected that he will be in North Korea at least until July and possibly longer. He tried for more than two years to obtain permission to operate Amateur Radio and finally was given the okay last year to bring an ICOM IC-706MkIIG into the country. Initially using a 20-meter dipole, he now has installed a multi-band vertical and has been active on several bands. A favorite hangout has been 21.225 MHz (he works split and listens up). Following the recent Ducie Island VP6DI DXpedition that racked up an estimated 40,000 QSOs, North Korea moved back into its long-held slot as the most-wanted DXCC entity. North Korea was added to the DXCC list in 1991, but actual amateur operations from there have been few and far between. The most recent was the brief P51BH operation by Martti Laine, OH2BH, in 1999, which netted just 263 contacts with the rarest entity.
