Unity crashes and mutter hangs the display refresh

Status in Unity:

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: unity

I reported a problem with mutter, in
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/+bug/638662, but i
got a crash of unity as well. So reporting with a gdb trace.

Just after today's update, I am no longer able to use the unity interface to
login. I only get a blank screen after logging in.
When I logged into gnome session and started mutter, no more X events were
handled neither the display got refreshed. I even tried to open some programs
from the console by typing xterm, firefox, gv etc. All these were executed, but
no change in the display screen. Only mouse pointer can be seen moving.

Later I tried to use gdb. But there is no crash of mutter whatever I
tried. When I started unity (unity -s or unity -p) from terminal after
mutter was started, I could see the mouse pointer change to I if I
open a terminal or back to default if I move it away. Then if i used
the mouse to click at some random places, it ends up in a crash of
  unity.
