Hi group,

A friend of mine has a laptop, CT-17, 756 Pro with a serial to USB cable
converter (and DX4Windows of course). Does anyone know how to setup the
radio interface with a USB port, or determine what port you are on? Is this
even possible? He doesn't have a serial port available on the laptop, hence
the USB cable. I use a serial port so I've not run into this before so I
thought I'd poll the experience of the group.
Thanks!

I think what you may need to know is the following (used with a single USB
to RS-232 cable):

(for Windows XP, anyway):

Right click on My Computer and select Properties. On the Hardware tab
select Device Manager. Scroll down to Ports and expand by left clicking on
the + sign. Right click on the new COM port and select Properties. On the
Settings tab there should be a box which indicates the current COM port, and
will allow you to set a different port, if desired. You may have to click
on Advanced to see this box. Make whatever changes are necessary and use OK
for each box to save the changes.

[Dx4win] SyncBack_DX4WIN_BACKUPS

2005-12-24 Thread Pete Smith
I notice that the Syncback web page says that only the paid version will back
up open files. I presume this means the Freeware version won't. At best this
makes for an issue of timing, to make sure that you get the absolutely last
version of the DX4WIN log.

Actually, barring a hard drive failure, DX4WIN's built-in backup process is
about as good as I have seen - in over 80,000 QSOs logged, I have never lost
one, and believe me, I've tried (;^))

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to Everyone.

I just can't make SyncBack work and I don't know what DX4WIN file changes as
the upper part of DX4WIN screen says in red, MODIFIED (count down numbers),
to black, Modified, to backup on a regular basis.
Anyone, help.
Thanks.

[Dx4win] SyncBack_DX4WIN_BACKUPS

2005-12-24 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
George,

I'm afraid I might have mis-marketed SyncBack when I talked about its
benefits here on the reflector. SyncBack is a great backup program for doing
daily (or less frequent) backups, but it is NOT the right tool for mirroring
two drives in real-time or at short intervals. There are some software
programs out there that will do this -- as well as some hardware-only
solutions -- but I don't use them and have no recommendations.

I simply back-up my DX4WIN \SAVE directory daily, and my entire collection
of \HAM RADIO programs weekly. I figure that's good enough for me... stuff
doesn't change that often here!

I have SyncBack (free version) set up to back up the DX4WIN Save file
every ten minutes and I have determined empirically that indeed it will back
up an open file. I just watched SyncBack light up the memory stick that I'm
using for backup, so I opened ve1rgb.dxl off my F-drive (Kingston) and, lo
and behold, it reflects the latest Q I made a few minutes before. It helps
to periodically use the Ctl-S feature so that the file that gets copied is
right up to date.
