[Dx4win] Databases

2017-11-24 Thread Bruce Blackley

I have had 9.03 for one week now and I have been exploring the different
menus to look for changes between 8.05 and 9.03. I found when I go to
File\Databases\countries as well IOTA and Qsl Manager, I get a message that
these editors are not available. Are these databases no longer available

to the end user as in 8.05?

Tnx

Re: [Dx4win] Databases

2017-11-24 Thread Bruce Blackley
I read what I could find. Here is what is in the help file. I didn't see
how to access these files. If I open the files directly, they are
unreadable.

Country Database
· The country database is now split in two files; country.dat contains the
callsign mappings, country
information etc. A second file, usrexcpt.dat contains the exceptions
(overrides) entered by the user.
This applies to prefix/zones/date exceptions for a callsign, QSL manager
information and QSL
manager address.
· Callsign exceptions and mappings in the country database have now a start-
and end-date allowing
multiple date ranges to be specified.
· Counties have now coordinates

Re: [Dx4win] Updating DX4WIN 9 (was: DX4WIN.CTY country file Release #17.13 - 22 November 2017)

2017-11-22 Thread Bruce Blackley
Hi Jim,

I have both version 8.05 and 9.03 on my computer. I used the updater to
install the new country list IN 8.05, all went well.

I opened 9.03 and clicked on help/check for updates. The window opened up
but nothing showed up on the list. Any suggestions. I tried this feature a
few days ago and it updated two files. My country list in 9.03 still says
Oct. 30, 2017.

Tnx

Yes. The only way to update DX4WIN 9 files is using Help | Check for
Updates. The DX4WIN Data Updater does not support DX4WIN 9. The data
file names are all different.

I will continue to update data files for users on DX4WIN 8.05 and
earlier. Any data file updates announced on the DX4WIN reflector will
be for both DX4WIN 9 as well as earlier versions.

[Dx4win] Dx4win] Update DX4Win from LOTW

2017-11-20 Thread Bruce Blackley
Food for thought.

I spoke to a friend of mine at the ARRL about logging programs that upload
to LoTW after every contact. He told me that he wished that they wouldn't
do that. He said that it over worked the servers at the ARRL and kept them
very busy. He said that he would prefer people to save up several contacts
and then upload them all at once. Just an observation from the other side.

[Dx4win] Recvd Box

2018-01-04 Thread Bruce Blackley
I was looking through my log after I moved it into 9.03 from 8.05. I
noticed that many of my contacts had a value in the box marked "Recvd" just
to the right of the boxes marked "rstS and rstR". Is there any way to clear
that box in the whole log without having to deleting them one at a time?
Since that field was not even version 8.05, I don't know why anything
should have been put into that box when I moved the log over to 9.03.

When I updated to Dx4Win 9 from version 8, version 9.3 was the latest

that happen? I am happy to have the latest and greatest version of Dx4Win,

[Dx4win] Confirmation totals

2018-02-06 Thread Bruce Blackley
A week ago or so David Gould sent an email to the reflector asking how to
query the database to extract all the confirmed contacts from the log via
card and LoTW together. I lost the email so I don't have David's call or
email address.

I think I may have an answer to his question but it is a little hard to
answer in an email. If David still wants help with this matter please call
me at 804-883-7733 and I would be happy to explain how I do this.

I have gone to preferences, Ext. Date and entered http://www.qrz.com/db/

[Dx4win] Submission

2017-12-27 Thread Bruce Blackley
In 8.05 under Report/submission there was only one choice. Now one has to
choose either card or LoTW. I have done both but when I go to
reports/summery It still shows that I have some contacts confirmed and my
submit totals don't show the same number as my "tot conf" number. It is
short the number of contacts in the "confirmed" column. What do I need to do
to get all the confirmed contacts to appear in the submit column? I must be
missing something.

[Dx4win] cty list

2018-04-11 Thread Bruce Blackley
If you press enter after typing "version" in the log window, you will log
that as a contact and will later have to go back and delete it.

If you go to preferences/qso and check Callsign update, the desired results
will show up in the country box and in the qsl mgr box without pressing the
enter key. This way you won't have to go in and delete the contact you just
logged.

Another plus of checking this box is that as soon as the first few of
letters of the call of someone you want to work is entered, the country will
pop up. You won't have to type in the whole call to see what country it is
from. Handy if you just want to know the origin of a call.

Hope this helps.

Hi Alan,

You must have already checked the "Callsign update" box. Several of my ham

[Dx4win] Log import

2020-02-14 Thread Bruce Blackley
I have been trying to get a friend of mine to switch from his logging
program, Log4OM, to Dx4Win. He sent me an ADIF file of his log and I
imported it into Dx4Win to demonstrate to him how powerful Dx4Win was.
Unfortunately when I imported his log into Dx4Win many many of his contacts
showed up as

60M CW for the mode in Dx4Win that were not on 60M in his logging program. I
opened the ADIF file and searched for the call sign of one of the 60M CW
contacts and in the ADIF file it was not 60M. There were a very few 60M
contacts in his log but Dx4Win showed hundreds and hundreds.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

I have tried many of these free programs. They all are loaded with so much
junk that is not needed that it takes forever just to figure out how to just
log a simple contact. Dx4Win is very simple to use and does a great job of
tracking awards. There are also many, many ways to query your log if you
want to extract information you need. I have been using Dx4Win for 17 years
and I have never found a logging program that comes close to Dx4Win.
Hopefully Paul will outlive me. Hi Hi. Plenty bang for the buck.

All of us are witness of very poor upgrade of Dx4Win . For instance

implementing MMTTY. OK , Dx4Win is commercial programme but question is

"is it enough bangs for buck", especially in time when you can find more

then few freeware logbooks with significant improvements. Certainly not.

If one day Jim decide to abandon Dw4inx what is future of programme? Just

my two cents. PS sorry for my poor english but I believe that you will

understand the point.

[Dx4win] Worked all states?

2019-12-31 Thread Bruce Blackley

I have been trying to work all states on 10m. I have managed to confirm 49
out of the 50 states. I still haven't been able to confirm North Dakota. I
have worked North Dakota four times but I can't get it confirmed. When I ask
Dx4Win to list the states I have confirmed it lists all 50 states including
North Dakota. When I ask for a summary on 10 meters it says I have 50 states
 I don't have 50 states confirmed because I still haven't confirmed North
Dakota. I have checked all of my 10 meter contacts with North Dakota and
none of them have a "Y" in any of the boxes for confirmation.

Does anyone have any suggestions how to fix this problem?

Tnx

[Dx4win] Worked all states?

2020-01-01 Thread Bruce Blackley

Thank you everyone for all the suggestions. I have tried all of them. As it
turns out, one of the stations I worked was in MN not ND. I changed ND to MN
and all is ok now. I still don't know why it said North Dakota was confirmed
when nothing was marked with a "Y". Not card, not LoTW or eqsl. I guess it's
just one of life's little mysteries.

I still wouldn't trade Dx4Win for all the logging programs out there. Even
if they paid me.

As long as you are happy with whatever logging program you are using and you
are having fun with the hobby, that's all that matters.

Some people drive Fords and some people drive Chevrolets. What ever turns

rue Bruce, the search is just great with DX4Win.

But the program is not being adapted to the changes in our ham world...

FT8, LoTW, Clublog...

Is it that hard to implement these improvements ?

All other programs do that, why can't Clublog do it too ? Is it that hard ?

But no matter what we Europeans say about it, there will still be no

reaction from the developpers.

I fully agree with Ricardo : if we are not informed of the future of

DX4Win, we will leave...

The fact we "insist" indicated that, yes, we like DX4Win, vut we could

like it even more if we were listened to

As flakey as LOTW has been recently I for one do not want my QSOs being

Would I like to see WSJT -> DX4WIN automation sometime in the future? Sure

Me neither, I prefer to control how and what I upload my Lotw QSO's. A great
improvement could be like in some contest programs the Shortened RST in CW.

Simple cero as T
Advanced cero as T and nine as N
Expert cero as T, Nine as N and one as A

What do you think?

Re: [Dx4win] Labels

2020-12-22 Thread Bruce Blackley
Thanks for the input Mark,

Paul suggested that the problem might be related to the printer, and he was
100% correct. The black ink cartridge had a bad connection. I tried
printing from a word processor and I had the same problem. I went to a
different printer and all was okay.

I should have known my problem was not Dx4Win, it never is. Usually I do
something dumb. I have been using Dx4Win for around 15 years and it is the
most stable program I have ever used. Paul has a lot to be proud of.

Thanks again

the band of the qso,the signal report of the qso and the mode of the qso.
Verified and printed by DX4WIN also was printed at the bottom. The call of
the station I worked was not printed.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas.

[Dx4win] FAILURE OF MY PROGRAM

2021-08-11 Thread Bruce Blackley
I don't know if anyone would like this idea or not.

I wrote a DOS batch file that executes whenever I boot up my computer. It
copies my current log file to a thumb drive plugged into the back of my
computer. That way I don't lose anything up to that point. If later I make
contacts and want to save them as well, I have a shortcut on my desktop to
activate the batch file and it will save the log file at that point whenever
I click on it.

Any time I open Dx4Win, it always opens the file in my save folder not the
one on the thumb drive. The only time I have to be careful is if I open the
file on the thumb drive to look at it, I have to go to the save folder and
open my log from there to make sure it doesn't open the one on the thumb
drive.

Just a suggestion. It has worked for me for several years with no problems.

73 and good luck

[Dx4win] : Re: QSO won't log problem

2022-05-18 Thread Bruce Blackley via DX4WIN

Hi Bill,

Ask your friend if he has the mode that he is trying to log checked in
awards . If it isn't checked I don't don't think it will log the contact.

(reports/awards/mode group) Also make sure he also has the other boxes
checked for the qso he is trying to log.

Good luck I hope this helps

Subject: [Dx4win] QSO won't log problem

A friend called me for help with dx4win but I'm baffled. He's a long

time user of DX4Win but hasn't been on the reflector before (he's

signing up right now - W2KKZ Bob) but is hung up trying to log the contact.

He has his log open and is trying to add a new QSO. He hits F9 and the

log box clears. He can enter all the QSO info and when he his "Enter"

the log box clears - but the qso doesn't show in the log.

When I repeat his steps on my computer everything works OK. I ASSUME

(?) something must be set wrong on his computer. Anyone have any

suggestions as to what to look for?

[Dx4win] FW: Can we add Q65? Other suggestions...

If it's not broken, don't fix it.

Unless you are the Government, then you fix it until it is broken.

Re: [Dx4win] any upgrades?

Subject: Re: [Dx4win] any upgrades?

Hi John, you hit the nail on the head. I am 78 years old and I have been
using Dx4Win ever since version 6.XX. The last thing I need is a big
learning curve with a program that may not be as good as Dx4Win when I
finally figure it out. With a little work you will find out that Dx4Win will
do more things than you can imagine. I wouldn't give up Dx4Win if someone
paid me.

When ever a new ham joins our radio club I suggest Dx4Win for their logging.
They are all happy because is is very easy to get started using it. As time
goes on one can add more and more knowledge of the use of the many features.

I believe most DX4Win users who also operate FT8 would like full

integration. Most likely that would require adding UDP communication and

Paul says that is not likely to happen, at least not anytime soon.

Fortunately, it is not difficult to add FT8 QSOs to DX4Win. I create a

shortcut to the WSJT-X (or JTDX) .adi file. I import that file and it

imports very quickly. Not ideal, but very easy.

If you need a logging program with real time uploads to Club Log, LOTW, full

integration with other software and other fun things, DX Labs software may

be your choice. But the learning curve is steep and the number of settings

and options is significant. DX4Win is very straight forward and so easy to

use. I want to focus on making QSOs, not spending tons of time on the

logging program.

Just my 2 cents

I am just sorta on the fence here now since I finally have made the jump to

FT8 and just wondering if DX4WIN is going to be upgraded to handle WSJT-X

like it does with MMTTY. I have been using DX4WIN for many years and now

have 160K+ q's in the log. There are several minor changes I would like to

see but integration of WSJT-X is one that I would like to see. So while I

have been looking at all the windows logging programs now available I don't

really want to move away from DX4WIN if something is in the pipeline. If

nothing coming then I guess I'll be looking at other options. Thanks for
