Re: [Dx4win] New vanity call sign and log in Dx4WIN

2023-12-15 Thread Dan Violette
When I was using DX4WIN, I set my old call QSOs as Group 1 (or whatever you
have available). Then my new call was Group 0 default. The QSOs stay in
the same log for tracking purposes. I also used other groups for operating
from work club station, when I went portable 7, etc. Some use groups for
different contests. Helps with sorting for sure.

Subject: [Dx4win] New vanity call sign and log in Dx4WIN

So this morning I got an email from the FCC that my new call sign was
granted. I wondered if I should start a new log in DX4WIN or just change my
call sign in preferences and keep using the same log?
I know I will need to apply for a new LOTW certificate once the FCC call
sign change winds its way through.

I am interested in tracking award progress with the combined activity but
not sure what steps I need to take. Thanks for any guidance on this.

Re: [Dx4win] Computer keying of Yaesu FT-857D

2023-05-19 Thread Dan Violette
The CAT port on the Yaesu does not interface with CW at all (see page 32 of
manual). You need to use another port that can key the CW jack which will
probably not work directly (since USB to COM, WIN 11 timing, etc., will mess
up the CW). You need a WinKeyer, or similar, and then it becomes another
COM port (connected to your USB) and sends the CW itself internally so
Windows is not involved and keys the CW port of the radio fine.

Subject: [Dx4win] Computer keying of Yaesu FT-857D

I'm trying to hook up a Yaesu FT-857D to a new Windows 11 laptop. (Haven't
used the Yaesu before.) I'm using the Yaesu CT-62 CAT cable to an Edgeport
USB to RS232 unit and into a USB port on the computer. COM 5 is the
appropriate port, and the Radio type is "Yaesu FT-857 modified by G4IRN."
I can get DX4WIN 8.05 to correctly show the frequency on the band map, move
the frequency when I rotate the radio dial and jump to spots when I click on
them in the band map.

But I can't get it to send CW via the computer. I have COM 5 selected in
the CW setup tab, the Device type is DX4WIN, DTR is CW keying and RTS is
None. If I key the radio with a straight key it works fine, but the
computer does nothing.

I also have the same situation with N1MM Logger+. I can get the frequency
data to work, but can't key the radio with the computer.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Re: [Dx4win] any upgrades?

2023-03-30 Thread Dan Violette
I also was a great fan of DX4WIN for many years (version 5.xx or late 4 is
where I started). I even slugged through the long delay to V9 from V8. I
have moved on after a year or so of V9 when no further real updates were
expected. I also would never recommend a newer ham to use DX4WIN since the
items that most would find almost necessary these days are LoTW integration
(upload/download confirmations within the program), and notification of
award needs in the WSJT window. Keeping LoTW in sync with one button and
seeing color coded FT8 needs in WSJT receive window sure is nice.

Hi John, you hit the nail on the head. I am 78 years old and I have been
using Dx4Win ever since version 6.XX. The last thing I need is a big
learning curve with a program that may not be as good as Dx4Win when I
finally figure it out. With a little work you will find out that Dx4Win will
do more things than you can imagine. I wouldn't give up Dx4Win if someone
paid me.

When ever a new ham joins our radio club I suggest Dx4Win for their logging.
They are all happy because is is very easy to get started using it. As time
goes on one can add more and more knowledge of the use of the many features.

I believe most DX4Win users who also operate FT8 would like full

integration. Most likely that would require adding UDP communication and

Paul says that is not likely to happen, at least not anytime soon.

Fortunately, it is not difficult to add FT8 QSOs to DX4Win. I create a

shortcut to the WSJT-X (or JTDX) .adi file. I import that file and it

imports very quickly. Not ideal, but very easy.

If you need a logging program with real time uploads to Club Log, LOTW, full

integration with other software and other fun things, DX Labs software may

be your choice. But the learning curve is steep and the number of settings

and options is significant. DX4Win is very straight forward and so easy to

use. I want to focus on making QSOs, not spending tons of time on the

logging program.

Just my 2 cents

Of course, you can look on the LoTW website for this QSO and see what VK5DOC
has entered on his certificate. I also suspect you accepted your logged

Yes, the LOTW entry shows Z29 in the confirmation. I don't remember now but
am guessing after downloading the confirmation ADIF file from and entering
it into my DX4WIN file either it automatically changed it to Z29 to match
his info or I was directed to do so when I ran the search for IMPORT to find
differences between what I had logged and what LOTW had in its records.
Usually the only differences are in GRID numbers. Anyway, mystery solved,
not a problem with my country file.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Entering VK5DOC over here correctly assumes zone 30. If your log has him as
29, it's possible that you created an exception in the database by
overriding 30 with 29. He may have given you a wrong number - he wouldn't be
the first one. The other possibility is that he incorrectly set up his TQSL
station information with a wrong zone and you overrode the default zone in
the log by accepting the LOTW value.
LOTW works on the GIGO system - virtually no station info verification
exists.

Hope this helps.

not put in FT8 in the note field.

If the problem should be solved, I guess that there must be a band plan for
e.g. DIGI including FT4, FT8 etc. build into DX4WIN. I am not sure whatever
that is possible.

Hellooo everybody,

Just verify this thing :

Create your wsjt_log from WSJT-X software.

Open the file you have created and you will see this :

WSJT-X ADIF Export

You just have to make a correction to , you must write :

WSJT-X ADIF Export

And then it will work well, because i am also using DX4WIN and WSJT-X 2.2
and that work fine like that.

Re: [Dx4win] Comments in logbook?

2020-06-23 Thread Dan Violette
Yep, there are a few ways someone could do it. I just think it would be hard
to find the notes when they are inside random QSO records. In a paper log I
would add it to the middle of the row with blanks top/bottom. Then a quick
scan through the logs finds the notes. I can see using personal call and then
search your own call for the “station notes”.

So I guess I'm still missing the point, as you say. No problem though, it works

I liked someone's idea about logging yourself and using that for personal

I might be missing your pointbut there aere already two fields in the QSO
window for each QSO made. Notes for this QSO and Notes for this Call (if I
remember correctly, I don't have the program loaded on this computer). So are
you talking about some other kind of comments? I use them frequently. When I
work someone with the same radio as me, I'll put a comment in the QSO in one of
those fields. When I get a new radio, I add comments like "first 6 meter
contact on new FT991A"or "he's using same microphone as me"and on and
on, etc, etc.

So are you talking about something different? Because there are already TWO
comment fields as the software already is. So I'm a bit confused what you are
asking foris it something different

2020-06-22 Thread Dan Violette
You missed the point.

Tom meant non-QSO related notes (e.g., raised dipole to 60', new TS-990, new
amp, North Korea added to deleted countries, etc.). QSO related notes are easy.

I liked someone's idea about logging yourself and using that for personal
station notes. I actually still have a paper log handy where all it is used
for now is station notes. I should just use a notebook and can then file a lot
of stuff in there with the notes. I have heard that recommended before but
have not implemented (is it too late?).

Re: [Dx4win] LoTW

2020-04-26 Thread Dan Violette
As long as it accepts your log it is working and will eventually process.
Very large logs can make it look like it is frozen. Give it 24 hours and
then worry. Most of the time during weekdays it processes smaller uploads
in a couple minutes. Z Monday (after a weekend where the contests are)
it will slow down. DXPedition uploads really slow it down. It was not too
many years ago when 24 hours was expected. We sure have gotten used to
immediate gratification!

Anybody knows what the problem is with LoTW ?
It gets stuck very often, and no log at all is uploaded for hours. This has

Are they planning to solve the problem ?

Was hoping someone had the right answer before I started speculating.

Not sure, but I think some things are cleaned up deleting (or rename for
now) "config.dat" in SAVE directory.

Worth a try. Might have to reset all your configurations if you have not
saved.

I can rename members.dat to .datx and DX4WIN still launches so something
else.

DX4WIN still fails to start with access denied to members.dat.

And if it was not for Jim (AD1C) the accuracy would not be there either.

Just an FYI from earlier discussion: I use DXLabs at the club station and we
send in our LoTW uploads in bulk but just two clicks to send (one to add
requested QSOs, one to send). Then downloads are one click to download log
match (that QSOs are matched in both places) and one more to update
confirmations. Last click can be done whenever you want to check for more
confirmations. I also think every QSO uploaded real time is a waste of LoTW
computer resources but they are so fast normally now that is not really an
issue.

It is normal that the most of the users still use dx4win are not interested for
auto upload to lotw, clublog and eqsl. After some time I believe the majority
of the dx4win users will be like me: they will not have interest for ft8 as
well.

Dx4win should be able to offer these 2 things. Of course switchable auto or
not. But this is what most of the people ask today. I have showed dx4win to
many new hams. I explain that the most important thing in a logging program is
to be reliable (not loose my qsos) and show the right dxcc entity and zone of
every call. Dx4win does perfect these 2 things.
I am a CQ checker in my country. You can not believe how many mistakes other
programs have in zones. But all the new hams are interesting for
ft8 and other digi and they don't like the way dx4win handles this. Also they
want to be able easily upload to lotw and clublog. In combination that they
need to pay for dx4win (not a few $) the most of them go away.
This is not good for most of us even we are ok with dx4win...

If you made the QSO in 1998 but it CONFIRMS in LoTW on March 15, 2020 the
March 15, 2020 is the date you will be downloading the confirmation from.
You do not need to go back to 1998 or you will be downloading ALL
CONFIRMATIONS since 1998. Not needed if you already download regularly.
LoTW keeps track of last download date.

Hello Luc,

Those are the correct steps. LoTW keeps track of when you made your last
download and when new QSLs arrive. You do not need to put a date in when
you download your reports.

Hi, I have a doubt.
I have imported all my log to DX4WIN from the ARRL's Logbook on the World
page.
1) Your QSO
2) Download report (I put the date where my radio activity started)
3) Your Call sign (any)
4) Download report (save it as Lotwreport.adi)
5) Then I go to DX4WIN in the LoTW menu, Import from LoTW and import the
file Lotwreport.adi into DX4WIN.

I think those are the correct steps.

My question is: Every time I import that file, should I do it completely?
Imagine that a QSO arrives confirming an entity that I made in 1998, should
I import from before that date?

Greetings to all and wishing this pandemic to pass as soon as possible.

Re: [Dx4win] Portable grids?

I have s second location. I upload to DX4WIN in a different group. Then
when LoTW submittal time, I sort by that group and export to LoTW (keep the
filter). Then I clear the filter and export the rest. Now I have two ADIF
files saves for each location (I add location and date in file name). Then
when I run TQSL, I choose the file and station location associated. Then
the county, state, grid, etc. get uploaded to match. Actually for me
everything the same except grid but with some 6M and FT8 etc. it matters.

Does the DX4WIN DX Spots consider a COUNTRY a NEW ONE until it is CONFIRMED or

Will the DX4win DX Spot window, continue to consider any spots with Mexico as a

#1 - For a specific time period (like a contest), turn on contest mode (QSO -
Contest Mode). Make sure to check off contest mode. I think it now resets
when you exit when it used to stay on until you unchecked. It will then let
you know of dupes and give a serial number. Works nice for casual contest

#2 and #3 have been talked about here but I would not expect to see and have

Re: [Dx4win] Fwd: WSJT to DX4WIN

2019-10-15 Thread Dan Violette
On Windows the WSJT will usually still be in the "Recent" folder when you
import. Then you don't have to remember where it is nor map a drive. You can
always look up the folder in WSJT under Open Log File Location (or something
similar).

Subject: Re: [Dx4win] Fwd: WSJT to DX4WIN

Hello Raymundo,

Unfortunately, there is not an easy way to import your logged QSOs from WSJT-X
into DX4WIN. We have asked Paul to consider adding UDP broadcast support to
DX4WIN, so that once a QSO is logged within WSJT-X it would also automatically
be logged in DX4WIN. But Paul has not responded to this request -- even though
most other logging programs already support UDP.

So now all you can do is manually import the logfile from WSJT-X into DX4WIN.
This is not as easy as it sounds because the WSJT-X logfile is hidden in an
obscure folder within Windows. I have shortened the search process by mapping
a drive in Windows to the folder within WSJT-X so that I can find the file
faster. But it is still not ideal. We need UDP support.

To manually import the log file from WSJT-X, go to File in DX4WIN, then
Import/Export, make sure ADIF is the file type selected, in the smaller window
select File again, Import and then go find the logfile for WSJT-X. Select the
logfile and either double click or click on Open. You will see a new window
for "Options for duplicate QSOs", and make sure "that Imported QSO is ignored"
is the one appearing in the drop down menu. You want DX4WIN to ignore all
duplicates as it imports the log from WSJT-X. Click OK and you are done.

I have over 6,500 FT8 QSOs and 1,300 FT4 QSOs in my log and they all have been
imported that way. The manual import of the logfile is very time consuming and
laborious, and can be a real problem when you are in the middle of a big
opening on 6 meters into EU. DX4WIN is an excellent logging problem except for
this one glaring weakness.

Now all you can do is manually import the WSJT-X logfile over and over and
over...

I hope this helps.

73,

Dave, N4QS

Re: [Dx4win] upload to LoTW problem from DX4WIN

2019-08-26 Thread Dan Violette
F8 works for me before I Export to LOTW. I label my QSOs from work club
with a different group number. Then I F8 to only that group number and
export to LoTW so when I use TSL I select the right location. It does ask
to use filter which I say yes. Then I clear the filter and upload the rest
as my home location for TQSL home location.

Out of time tonight to test with one QSO. I would assume the one QSO has
LOTW Upload flag set to Y.

F8 and Export to LoTW has no relation!

Export to Lotw means: check all QSO and select where is LotW field set to Y

Only this QSOs will exported in a file for the upload

Re: [Dx4win] Log export as .csv file (for spreadsheet analysis)

2019-08-22 Thread Dan Violette
I have never had a problem with the '*' and Excel. I convert VUCC to CSV then
edit to one page for reference and saved to .XLSX. I also do DXCC with an
Excel macro (.XLSM) to format and remove deleted that were not worked. Again,
for a reference paper I take with me.

Be aware if you are exporting a DX4WIN report as a csv file into Excel:

DX4WIN uses an asterisk (*) to denote credited entities in a report.
This character is a special reserved character in Excel, and attempting to use
the raw csv export file from a DX4WIN report will therefore give some weird
results. I'm always forced to first run the csv file through Notepad or Wordpad
and do a search and replace on all the * characters.
This has been a problem with the program forever, and I sure wish it could be
fixed.

Re: [Dx4win] Not Recognizing LOTW Confirmation

You need to edit the AWARD boxes at the very bottom. LOTW=Y just says you got
a confirmation via LOTW. The boxes at the bottom specify your award status
(submitted, confirmed) for DXCC, DXCC/CW, WAZ, etc.

Hi Mike,

The first thing I did in DX4WIN was to change each one individually to S.
Then in ARRL LOTW I confirmed and paid.
Today ARRL LOTW confirmed them.
I went into DX4WIN Reports and changed Submitted to Confirmed for Mixed, Band
and Mode.
Then I made Bothe the LOTW and DX4WIN files and saved them.
Then I started AD1C LOTW DX4WIN program.
Pointed DX4WIN and LOTW each to their file locations.
Then ran ADIC.
Surprised to see the AD1C report with the 8 mismatches.
Looked in DX4WIN DXCC reports and surprised to see M for each.
Next went into each of the 8 contacts and at the bottom changed LOTW to Y.
Updated the DX4WIN file that AD1C looks at and ran it.
Still 8 mismatches.

The 8 contacts in DX4WIN still do show a C in the DXCC Reports window.
Each individual 8 contacts still do show a Y in the confirm box.

No Joy.

Re: [Dx4win] Contest log program

2019-02-18 Thread Dan Violette
You do have to stop the radio in DX4WIN if you run both programs together so
the contest program can use the radio control. I also use N1MM+ then ADIF
export and then import into DX4WIN. No program is going to log into DX4WIN so
you are really just using DX4WIN for the cluster spots telling you what you
need special (but can't click to move radio to freq in DX4WIN).

I do #2 and create a personal log that I overwrite with new LoTW info for
JT-Alert, Import (ignore duplicates) like the other file. I actually then
have the WSJT-X log file as a backup and my JTAlert as my real one.
Remember you do not need to go before July 1, 2017 for uploads since FT8 did
not exist (go back another month if you were testing early).

1. Does DX4WIN developer, KK4HD, have any plans to provide support for this?

2. Are any DX4WIN users currently using JTAlert by exporting a copy of the

Re: [Dx4win] log question

2018-05-19 Thread Dan Violette
Start Import ADIF file like you normally would.

Import "wsjtx_log.adi" probably in "C:\Users\ki6x_000\AppData\Local\WSJT-X"
with "ki6x_000" actually replaced with your USERNAME on the PC. I know
there is a shortcut that is generic but don't know it off the top of my
head.

When "Option for duplicates" pops up make sure it is "Imported QSO is
ignored" so you don't get the previously imported ones again.

There was discussion on this which has better explanation:

http://mailman.qth.net/pipermail/dx4win/2018-April/thread.html

See "Importing WSJT-X ADI..." thread. Not the best information and can't
find the other messages quickly.

Might be some from March also (or earlier):

This morning, I discovered the many (most) modes were *not* enabled for the
CQ WAZ award in DX4WIN. This may have been something specific to my DX4WIN
configuration.

Go to File | Awards, then click on the WAZ tab at the top. The box in the
lower left lists "Valid modes". I believe all can/should be checked.

The reason I noticed this is that I was not getting "Worked" credit for an
FT8 QSO made with Zone 24.

[Dx4win] MMTTY with DX4WIN will not TX (for EA5FID)

2018-04-14 Thread Dan Violette
I have been trying to help Juan EA5FID with his problem. I ran out of
ideas. Here are the clues:

* MMTTY transmits and receives OK alone
* MMTTY launches out of DX4WIN OK (executable entered correctly and
launches)
* MMTTY receives OK when launched from DX4WIN
* Problem: Does not transmit when launched out of DX4WIN

* Using: TX / PTT & FSK / Port EXTFSK in MMTTY
* Using ICOM radio commands for Rx/Tx (Icom CI-V)

If you can help Juan that would be appreciated. I am not using Icom. I can
send an email train with pictures of his settings directly if needed.

It is very simple to do.

1. Simply create an up to date ADI file of your entire log using DX4WIN.

2. Under logging in JTAlert, point to this file as your log file.

3. In JTAlert, use scan log and rebuild

4. Specify mode as FT8 for example, and all your DXCC countries worked and
needed will be updated for that mode.

New worked stations will be automatically added to the ADI file you created in
step 1. As always, create a back up copy of your log in case something gets
hosed up.

Worked great for me. Good luck.

There doesn't appear to be a simple way to do this, as far as I can tell. I
think that Paul would need to make some kind of an interface available.

There might be some way to have JT-AlertX do a period ingest of an ADI file to
get the countries, but I just decided that I'd treat everything as a new one on
FT8 so I haven't bothered to try (though fortunately my needed list of ATNO is
small enough to enter manually).

From his email:
I got tired of navigating to the WSJT-X directory every time I wanted to import
my WSJT-X log into DX4WIN. Fortunately, Windows 10 has a solution. The idea
is to create a symbolic link in your SAVE directory that points to the WSJT-X
log directory. The full instructions for creating symbolic links are here:

https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/16226/complete-guide-to-
symbolic-links-symlinks-on-windows-or-linux/

Here's the quick start:

1. Start by opening a Command Prompt in Administrator mode. From the Start
menu, find "Windows System" and right-click on "Command Prompt'.
Follow the "More" link and then click "Run as Administrator".

2. Determine the location of your WSJT-X log directory. Here is one way:

cd %localappdata%
C:
dir

You should see a WSJT-X directory there. The full path should look
something like this:

C:\Users\jjrei\AppData\Local\WSJT-X

3. Now determine the location of your DX4WIN SAVE directory. Mine is here:

E:\dx4w903\save

4. "cd" into your DX4WIN save directory:

cd E:\dx4w903\save
E:

5. Finally, create the link. Here is the command I used:

E:\dx4w903\save> mklink /D WSJT-X C:\Users\jjrei\AppData\Local\WSJT-X

(do not type the part *before* the >, only the part beginning with "mklink"

That's all there is to it. The next time you want to import using "File |
Import", you will see the WSJT-X link in your SAVE directory.
Double-click on that link, and you'll find your WSJT-X ADIF file there.

This is not limited to WSJT-X, you can create links to anything you want.

That's what I was going to basically say. Never will be a LoTW match unless
they go back. You uploaded with the correct info in case they do? As long
as the records match credits you are fine and all you can do. I too have
DXCC submittals from 80's - 90's and all they did was write the call suffix
on the proper record sheet (SSB, CW, etc.) and did not note date, band, even
mode in some cases.

These are probably pre-computerization QSLs. I have several DXCC records
that have no info other than a entity name since I've never submitted a
paper card or LoTW credit since computerization.
For example, this one:

*Worked Station*
*Worked* 002
*DXCC* ABU AIL ISLANDS (DELETED) (2)
*Date* 1945-11-15
*Mode* UNKNOWN
*Band* UNKNOWN
There's no QSO details for LoTW to provide since there's no QSO details
recorded. I occasionally submit QSLs to fill in the details for these,
especially back when a submission allowed 100 QSLs.

Not sure of specific problem but want to make sure you understand that Group
000 is ALL CALLS. So, if you select Group 000 all QSOs/QSLs from your log
are selected, no matter the actual call used or group number. Group 000

000 - WC2L

000 - WC2L-QSL
001 - NA2NA-QSL
002 - KB2HUN-QSL
They are all Group/Date filters The WC2L & KB2HUN appear to work, The NA2NA
does not. They are all configured what I think is right. I have not tested

Re: [Dx4win] FT8

2017-12-26 Thread Dan Violette
You must have DX4WIN V9 to have the FT8 mode included. Which version do you
have? There is a work around for V8:

Set those QSOs to an unused mode like "TOR" and then update TQSL settings to
convert TOR to FT8 upon upload to LoTW - OR - edit the ADIF from TOR to FT8
before upload. Note if you use another mode and edit the ADIF that the length
of the MODE field is 3 when FT8 is used. Later when you upgrade, you can
convert all 'TOR' QSOs easily to 'FT8'.

Each install from the original download (including new license) or did you

Your log is ONLY on the first PC and not on a shared drive somewhere?
Is your old DX4WIN log available to the new program on the new PC?
When you say 20 QSLs, do you mean 20 QSOs were inputted and now 5000 of

I would like to print the complete manual for version 9 that came with the
download but I don't see a way to do that. Is it possible to do that and I
am too dumb to figure it out?

Version 9.03 sure works great and it is exciting to have it to use.

Thanks for your help.

Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN V9

2017-11-22 Thread Dan Violette
Doyle - File ends in ".dx4w9", correct? Make sure it is in your DX4W90x folder
(x being another number, probably DX4W901 but maybe the later updates
originally installed create another name matching the version) and not being
saved in an older version folder by mistake.

All - Speaking of that, makes me wonder, would there be much of a problem
renaming the folder to end in the 9 (i.e., DX4W9). Would that affect more than
just the log not being found the first time (which might still be found since
launching out of that folder). Thinking out loud before trying...

Re: [Dx4win] Rig file ? Kenwood TS690S

2017-11-20 Thread Dan Violette
I would try the TS-850 if someone with the radio does not answer you. About
same vintage. Not sure how it would handle 6M+ though auto selections.
Most Kenwoods are almost the same in radio control. Can create a custom RIG
file if something missing. Just start with the closest Kenwood first. I
have not done that but many have on here and someone may have a 690 rig file
they created already.

Re: [Dx4win] Printing Direct To QSL

2017-10-23 Thread Dan Violette
Been a long time since I set this up. I have a "paper size" set in my
PRINTER preferences itself called "QSL Card" (you can call it anything).
Then I choose that from the custom paper. Hopefully this gets you started.
I could do some more research if needed. It is nice putting a pile of my
printed cards with a blank spot for QSL info in the laser printer and just
spitting them out. Global QSL though has cut back my use of that ability a
lot.

OK, I used to know how to do this but have obviously forgotten.

Using Version 9

I am setting up (trying to that is) to print directly to one of my
pre-printed QSLs. The card is 5.5W x 3.5H. The info needs to print in the
top right corner, starting at 2.81 from the left and the size of the
printing window is 2.69 x 1.69 inches.

I have created a custom label (Custom1) with label width and height set as
above. Spacing left is 2.81 and spacing top is .16. Nr Across and Down is 1.
I have set a custom paper size of 5.5 x 3.5 and that seems to be the issue.
When I click Ok, I get a "Not able to set Custom Paper Size" message. In
'Preview', I get a graphic of the label in the correct position but the page
size is 8.5 x 11.

Just found out that it does not like 4 x 6 but accepts 5 x 7.

Am I missing something or is what I'm trying to do just plain illegal?

Thanks,

Re: [Dx4win] Packet Filtering

2017-10-13 Thread Dan Violette
Don't see a reply yet. I am not the best to answer since I let everything
through, but some things I do know:

DX Alerts are the audible notices. This allows you to specify what you want
announced (voice, alarm, etc,)
Ignore Gray/Black I think is the highest level you can go to block.

I do not think this would work, but, have you tried setting the color for
the items you do not want to see to black? Maybe you only want level 1, 2,
3 then set 4+ to black (or gray). Pay careful attention to what each level
does. I think there is some overlap. I want new bands and modes for each
DXCC and level 6 is more important to me than 4 & 5. I pay attention to all
background highlighted spots. That is if I have kept the default spot
colors where levels 1, 2, 3 & 6 are highlighted. I may have done that
myself (forget since have had Ver 8 since it first came out years ago).

Hi

level of 6 or above.

The following parameters have been set:

Preferences | Packet 1 | DX Alerts = Award Band not conf

Preferences | Packet 1 |Options | Spots to Ignore = Gray and Black (this is
confirmed to filter out P8 and P9 spots)

Yet still I see spots in the packet window of priority 6 and 7 - in addition
to those I want of P1-P5 (well I see P2-P5 anyway).

Actually the DX Alerts setting doesn't seem to make much difference.

Re: [Dx4win] question (FT8)

2017-09-29 Thread Dan Violette
Many of use change the mode to "TOR". This leave the 3 characters in the
ADIF, you can have TQSL convert TOR to FT8 upon upload, and when DX4WIN
(version 9 in beta) comes out you can sort by TOR and change to FT8
(assuming you have not used TOR for real - it is not an ADIF mode so should
never have been used). I even change the WSJT-X mode in the ADI file to TOR
after I transfer (find/replace) so I can keep the ADI file for checking for
worked before and I can specify "Ignore Duplicate QSOs" when I import so I

Yeah, except for this:

No. If you've submitted a QSO containing erroneous information, correct
the information and submit the QSO again

So how can the total be affected with an action that can not be taken?

Re: [Dx4win] JT65A

2016-08-12 Thread Dan Violette
Easier to do in person. Basic ideas: Run in CW part of band first and get
signal on the screen. Should be blue/gray background with yellow signal
(something like that, going by memory don't do too often). Makes sure wide
filter and there is a slider for shooting for 0 when no signal (and + numbers
when signal). When you see a signal, go to 14.076 and see if you find some
JT65 there. Make sure either digital mode or USB depending on what radio
recommends. If you hear something, it should decode at the end of the minute
(46 seconds after). Do that a bit until you are comfortable receiving. Then
TX is a combination of speaker output from the PC and radio mic gain along with
PTT. More difficult but get the RX first.

This all assumes you have the audio lines from the PC to the radio correct.
May need to find a local friend who has done it.

Re: [Dx4win] MMTTY

2016-07-01 Thread Dan Violette
Bjorn, Tested mine. It does it too. Plays the "asterisk" sound from Windows.
Have not had 2 sound cards long so never really paid attention to it. My theme
plays a quiet "strum" that would hardly be heard over the RTTY and monitor I
usually listen to at the same time. Don't contest with DX4WIN so never really
noticed.

Subject: Re: [Dx4win] MMTTY

Hi List,

Thank you for all the responses.

I now know %X/%e are valid macro tokens used to switch on/off FSK transmission
in the DX4Win GUI for MMTTY.

However the "ding mystery" remains unsolved.

I have made the following observations:

The loudspeaker ding is associated with using the %X token (start FSK
transmission) in a function key macro (e.g. F1). The %e (stop
transmission) creates no ding.

The actual sound made is called "Windows Background" and is also used e.g. when
changing the Windows loudspeaker volume using the mouse in the system tray.

I have confirmed the issue on three different installations; A HP Pavilion
Desktop running Swedish Windows 10, an ASUS UL-30VT Laptop running Swedish
Windows 7 and an HP Folio Laptop running English Windows 7.

The ding sound comes through Windows' general audio channel, not the
communications audio channel (which is used for e.g. the FSK audio from MMTTY).
If you use an extra sound card (like I ended up doing) the ding will come
through your loudspeakers and just annoy you.
However, more severely, if you use the PC's built-in sound card for the FSK
signal the ding will overlay with the FSK and distort the first few characters
of ALL your transmissions.

I have tried different settings in "keying setup" Alt-S with no effect.

I have tried placing the MMTTY executable in the default place (c:\program
files\mmtty instead of c:\ham\mmtty where it is installed by default) with no
effect

I have tried changing the settings on most things I find in the Preferences
drop down with no effect.

I have also played around with the standalone version of MMTTY and it shows no
such behavior (it uses backslash "\" as a token to turn on and off transmission
in function key macros.)

Am I alone in seeing this?

Cort,

%x (small x) sends the date, so that is why you are sending the date. I
think you want %X (capital X), which starts the transmission - even though
it says starts a PSK transmission. %X is what I am using.

Offhand, I can't find the complete definitions of all the control keys with
capital letters - maybe someone else can point us at it.

Good luck.

If it is marked as Mailed (M) then there is a date it was mailed and then
printing assumes already sent and does not print. Remove the date mailed
when you mark it Y for Label and it should change to Label (L) and show up.
Try one and if works you can search for all "Y" in Label and then under QSLs
menu can clear date for the filtered items (make back up of file in case
accidently remove all dates or the like).

Have not tested for your situation to not 100% sure I have the answer.

I just got a new Windows 10 laptop. DX4WIN works fine on it, other than one
very annoying problem. I wonder if anyone has the same problem, and/or has
been able to fix it:

Normally, Dx4WIN uses the F9 function key as a shortcut to select "add real

when I hit F9. I can select add real time by using my mouse, but I would
really like to be able to use the F9 key.

If anyone has had the same problem and has found a work-around, I'd like to
know about it.

Re: [Dx4win] VUCC Report Blank

2015-11-26 Thread Dan Violette
Thanks much Arne, that did it. I kept looking at VUCC in the report awards.
Now I think I know what happened. When I upgraded with Win 10 and had
changes in ports, I loaded an old INI without that and forgot to edit that.
I knew something to do with no bands to choose in the award report was the
issue.

Re: [Dx4win] Print details on QSO labels

2015-05-25 Thread Dan Violette
Yes, I was going to say the same thing. Look at Jim's (AD1C) utility ADIF
to DX4WIN. You can assign a group number, add a note, and couple other
nice things. I use to import my contacts from club station to keep separate
from home station QSOs. It originally was only for importing contests but I
asked Jim to add NONE for general QSO imports (been over 2 years since
that was added).

John,

When you use ADIF to DX4WIN utility, you import ADIF files (assuming you
know the call/operator) and can give it a group number. The result is a
DX4WIN file including group number. In your case you change the group nuber
per imported file. Later you merge all the DX4WIN files. This provides you
with a single file but with different group numbers. This is the way I
handle all my different operations.

Hi Joe, funny I was going to mention start at 1 leaving 000 for All QSO but
didn't want to confuse the issue.

One small issue with DX4Win is you cant export/import the group name with
the ADIF, 1 of the calls I manage we have a QSL manager and he needs to
print the operator's call on the QSL card. Each operator's log I edit the
OPERATOR field to NOTES and delete all fields that populate the NOTES FOR
THIS QSO in Dx4win like STX, RX FREQUENCY. I now have just the operators
call in the notes field and when I export the combined logs to our manager I
just edit the export adif from NOTES back to OPERATOR.

Hi Joe, one option is to give each operator a group number and the operators
call as the group name, add %% to the label greeting line including any text
you want printed under Preferences/Set-up Parameters/Lab Rep. When you
print your labels check print group names under Print QSL Labels.

To import your .adif set the DX4Win group number under Preferences/Set-up
Parameters/QSO for each operator log you import.

Hi Paul,

As many of HAMS already have android based tabs/smartphones, it may be very
useful to consider porting some basic DX4WIN features (logging, spots, rig
control) into the Android OS environment. It would be great for portable
operations with small rigs like FT817. IC706 etc , thus avoiding to carry
the bulky PC (hated by XYL-s :) ! ).
Any thoughts on this?

Possibly nothing wrong but the MMTTY window with the tuning indicator you
are looking for has a tendency to get hidden. Have a look in your tool bar

this should bring the window to the top. You will have to arrange your

Actually, it would be extremely handy to have dual/dual receive - MMTTY and
2-Tone on each the left and right channels of the sound card to permit
listening in the pile-up on split DX. It's not difficult to do a separate
instance of MMTTY for the sub RX/TX VFO but it should be equally easy to add
the ability to clone the basic RTTY receive Window.

when submissions are initiated outside of DX4WIN it has no way of knowing

I have several DXCC credits from card submissions for mixed DXCC that have
no information other than the fact that I have a QSO with that entity.. this
is clearly not very useful for matching my log.

I have looked at the ADIF file and it would be fantastic to be able to use
this file to set the DXCC award flags in DX4WIN. Since most of my DXCC
submissions have been done using LoTW I am unable to easily and accurately
educate my DX4WIN log of QSO's DXCC award status, this would be the missing
link.

That's the reason ARRL added it, to allow data in your DXCC record, when
it's available, to be queried.
It's good to be able to tell which one of the dozens of QSOs with a common
DXCC entity that ARRL used in your DXCC record.

Re: [Dx4win] FW: Printing Labels showing frequency

2013-10-12 Thread Dan Violette
Alan,

I don't think you can. The exact frequency ends up in the notes field if
you added the $$ (so probably cannot be put on a label). There is the
setting in the QSO preference for MHZ instead of Band, but without trying, I
think it will just put 14 MHz instead of 20m and not the exact frequency if
it even does that on a label.

I posted this a month ago but no one replied. Anyone have any suggestions

Subject: [Dx4win] Printing Labels showing frequency

I've been poking around various HELP topics but can't find an answer to
this.
I presently have my labels set up with small windows showing the following
QSO info:

DATE UTC BAND RST 2X

When I print the labels this info is filled in. Example:

 DATE UTC BAND RST 2X

15-SEP-2013 2156 14 MHZ 599 CW

Rather than just showing the band (14 MHZ) is there a way to show the exact
freq logged (14012.0)?

My contest loggers always show the exact freq I worked a station (ex:
14012.0) rather than just 14.000 or 14 MHZ. When I transfer my contest logs
(via ADIF) into DX4WIN the exact freq appears in my FREQ (KHZ) little box in
the main logging window after the download. I am now in the habit when I log
a regular every day QSO I fill in the exact freq in this same window. But
when I print the labels it will just print 14 MHZ.

TIA 73

Alan, K7ACZ

Re: [Dx4win] (no subject) VFO A/B Flash

2013-09-13 Thread Dan Violette
I think this is an ICOM software (CI-V?) issue. DXlab does it to an IC756
also at the club station. I have never had it happen with my Kenwood.
Seems to be a command that connects the ICOM radio to the software causes
things to switch to the sub-VFO for a couple seconds and then back. With a
SteppIR hooked up and the alternate VFO on a different freq/band, the
controller starts changing the antenna and then reverses and changes back
when main VFO comes back.

Re: [Dx4win] Cabrillo file

2013-06-24 Thread Dan Violette
Nope, will not. Not a contesting program per the author (other than the
minor ability it has). Cabrillo needs special headers and format for each
contest so would be too much worth anyway. Contest in another program (e.g,
N1MM) and export ADIF from that and import into DX4WIN. You can output in
ADIF and then convert to Cabrillo (I think) in some software. You enter all
the header info when asked and it creates. Also, WA7BNM's site has a
Cabrillo generator that does similar and you paste in your log (or type in
your log) for small ones. I can look up more info if you do not find
yourself or get in many replies.

about my LoTW up load problem. I finally got the file up loaded and
confirmed.
I went through the process for a third time this morning and it worked.
During the process there is a file that asks if you want to allow dupes. I
checked my file and there were no dupes so I selected NO. This time I
selected ALLOW DUPES and the file was up loaded and a window came up that
said the file was received by LoTW and credit for the 14 calls I sent. I
don't know why that made a difference, but it worked. I am sure there were
no dups in the file, but LoTW thought there was. Thanks again for all the
help. I just hope it works next time I up load.

Several of you have said that LoTW will not accept a ADIF file and needs a
tq8 file. In the HELP file it states that LoTW will accept a ADIF and
CABRILLO file. I did not find any prompt about a tq8 file and figured it was
not needed in v1.14.1.
I checked my ADIF file and it has the calls to up load correct. The ADIF
file is located in C:\LoTW as ks0m149.ADI. That is the file I selected for
the TQSL to sign and upload. It did not do that. I tried to attach the
file to email and LoTW cannot find the attachment in the ADIF format.
I have tried twice this morning to up load the file with no success. If
this version needs a tq8 file how do I make one ?
My CERT is active and my profile info is correct. I am at a loss as to what
to do next.

Hi Dick,
I have no idea why TQSL did not automatically send the file but you can only
upload a TQ8 file not an adi file to LOTW.

When I updated my TQSL program I just started the new downloaded file and it
removed the earlier version, kept all my certs, and was ready to go and it
did work fine here.

 Here is what I did.

In DX4WIN made a ADIF file (ks0m149).ADI and saved it in my C:\LoTW

.

Opened TQSL - File - Select file to sign and upload ADIF or CABRILLO

Selected the ks0m149.ADI file in C:\LoTW

The file (C:\lotw\ks0m149.ADI) will be signed and up loaded using Station

I thought then the file was automatically up loaded. It apparently was
 not sent.

I then opened a e-mail addressed to LoTW and attached ks0m149.ADI

Did this twice and both were rejected.

What did I miss or doing wrong?

new LOTW certificate for NA2U/7 and I'm waiting for it to arrive. BUT, now
I realize that the Qs I uploaded from DX4WIN (probably) show NA2U.

Now I'm wondering if I have to create a separate log for these Qs for
uploading to LOTW. The ADIF file I imported/uploaded must have been for /7.

I always suspect pilot error. Am I missing anything here? What other
steps, if any, do I need to take?

Fred, there's no need to make a separate log. Just do an ADIF export of
your current log, filtering (F8) on the contest date(s) as well as the mode
(RTTY?) and/or group number. Then you can sign just those QSOs with the
NA2U/7 certificate and upload them.

Yes, those are the labels I use. You can even specify where the first label
is (skip blanks) if you have used some and there are more on the sheet.
Last purchase of cards (I had them printed/cut at office store) I left 3 of
4 on each sheet with a blank space instead of an information box. I can
stick the label there and nothing to show through. I actually set up the
laser printer to print directly on the cards which I can do now instead of
labels.

Groups can be any date since you specify each QSO to a certain group #.
If you want to view (filter) only a certain group # then you go in to:

Filter and Search by group number

OR if you want a selection instead:

Filter
Selection
Under Current Selection if you have already created the other selections
you will see the date range (leave the end blank for no end date)
If you do not have a selection yet, choose ADD, Rename + Set date range +
Double click the group # you want in the selection (can choose more than
one, but you appear to want only one)

Try that. Dan KI6X

Barry, Dave, Dan,

Thanks for your encouragement and advice. It looks like it is going to work.

Here is a little background information for those who might be interested.

The switch on the back of the TS-850 near the key jack is set to manual so
as not to use the internal keyer. The keying voltage of the TS-850 is 5
volts at about 1 mA. It has a positive keying line.

I''ve got a Y connector. The plug that goes into the jack on the TS-850 is
wired correctly (it makes a difference if the 1/4 plug is mono or stereo).
The line from the serial port of the computer will plug into one branch of
the Y and the line from the keyer to the other branch.

The Heathkit Model SA-5010 microMatic Memory Keyer dates from 1982. The
keyer output is rated at +250 volts @ 100 mA (or -200 volts @ 40 mA) so it
can be used for either positive or negative keying lines. It uses transistor
switching, not a relay, but at these ratings I think there should be little
strain on the transistors. I believe the keyer was designed to be used on
transceivers with tubes.

My next step is to build or buy a serial cable. There are plenty of diagrams
for building one of these. Got to look in my parts boxes.

As others said, yes should work. Make sure the small switch on the back of
the TS-850 is on manual keying (not using internal keyer). Since you are
using basically 2 external keyers (on/off keying of the line), either keying
will key the radio.

OR a paddle/keyer without having to unplug one and plug in the other.

Thanks for your advice.

Re: [Dx4win] LoTW Upload

2012-12-09 Thread Dan Violette
It shows an upload date which corresponds to when it is processed not first
uploaded despite the wording. I verified this with my last upload actual
date/time versus when new QSL matches hit.. Dan KI6X

Hugh,
After you do an upload, go to Find Call and search your call? This option
says it is the callsign's last upload. I haven't tested this myself. I'm
waiting until the backlog clears before I do an upload again.

Hugh
It only shows up when you have uploaded those files.
No trace afterwards, if b4 28/11/2012 you probably need to upload Again due
the BUG they fixed late evening on 28 November

I have uploaded two TQ8 files to LoTW recently.
Shouldn't those show up somewhere even though they have not been processed
by LoTW ?
I can't seem to find them, unless I'm not looking in the right place
Using Dx4Win v8.05...

Well for me, the clublog feature was exactly what I wanted in this case, but
I can see where there might be other variations as well. None of the
examples that I can think of (including the one I started this thread
with) are must have things, but rather fall into the category of
interesting things you can find out.

Actually, that is the perfect solution, and one I'd forgotten about.
(I've been a member of Club Log for a long, long time.) That actually
gives me the exact information that I was looking for. Thanks for
mentioning it.
This works for all-time new ones, but not, for example, if I want to
see if I worked any new countries during CQWW CW for the CQ DX
 Marathon in 2012. A while back, I wrote a quick-and-dirty program to
display the first time a new country was worked, given an ADIF file as
input. It was never meant for release, but I could add filtering to
it. That way you could export whatever portion of your log you cared
about (to ADIF) and run the report against that.

But it would be better if Paul could build this into the program. If
I recall, KD7P/N7XR's logging program (whose name escapes me at the
moment) was able to do this, back in the mid-1990's!
