Hi Folks,

I'm using DX4WIN 9.0.9.1259.

I want to see a listing of only DXCC entities that I have worked on 60m. I
do not want to see DXCC entities on that band that I have NOT worked. I
tried to do this with a "Needed Listing" by "Band" (Mixed and Modes
unchecked), All modes with 60m selected as the only band.
Still, the DXCC listing contained all the DXCC entities, many of which I
have never worked on 60m.

Is there a way to get the listing I want?

I agree with Tim K4TK. DX4WIN is an old school DXer's logging program and it
suits my needs very well. Manual LoTW import/export and WSJT-X import are only
a few mouse clicks and take less than a minute.

Having said that, it would be nice to know that Paul has a plan for the future
when he wants to (or needs to) bow out.

On a very different note - I would like to see a similar program for the Mac OS.

(Note that I made my living using a piece of equipment designed over 500 years
ago with one moving part, and I still drive a car with a manual transmission.)

Re: [Dx4win] any upgrades?

2023-03-29 Thread John, K9EL
I believe most DX4Win users who also operate FT8 would like full
integration. Most likely that would require adding UDP communication and
Paul says that is not likely to happen, at least not anytime soon.

Fortunately, it is not difficult to add FT8 QSOs to DX4Win. I create a
shortcut to the WSJT-X (or JTDX) .adi file. I import that file and it
imports very quickly. Not ideal, but very easy.

If you need a logging program with real time uploads to Club Log, LOTW, full
integration with other software and other fun things, DX Labs software may
be your choice. But the learning curve is steep and the number of settings
and options is significant. DX4Win is very straight forward and so easy to
use. I want to focus on making QSOs, not spending tons of time on the
logging program.

Just my 2 cents

I am just sorta on the fence here now since I finally have made the jump to
FT8 and just wondering if DX4WIN is going to be upgraded to handle WSJT-X
like it does with MMTTY. I have been using DX4WIN for many years and now
have 160K+ q's in the log. There are several minor changes I would like to

have been looking at all the windows logging programs now available I don't
really want to move away from DX4WIN if something is in the pipeline. If
nothing coming then I guess I'll be looking at other options. Thanks for

Greetings,

This one has me stumped.

The other day, I worked FK8HA on 6m FT8 for my first FK on that band. When
I look at either the DXCC (same country) window, or a DXCC Report Listing,
this contact does not appear. The 6m DIG square in the Same Country window
and the 6m spot on the report listing are both blank. A DXCC Report Summary
does not list this QSO. All of my other 6m contacts and all of my other FK
contacts appear as normal. If I enter another 6m QSO with a fictitious FK
station, it appears in the reports properly, but FK8HA does not. When I do
a search (F8) for FK QSOs, the 6m QSO with FK8HA is included. The QSO
details all appear correctly: Prefix =FK; Band =6m; Mode =FT8; Grid =RG37;
Freq= 50,313.00. I have the latest version of the program (9.0.9.1259) and
the country list that was released today. Any ideas?

Thank you.

Re: [Dx4win] Lost QSOs

Joe - did you set up a secondary backup? Under preferences, then QSO tab,
there is a place to enter a secondary backup directory. Assuming you did
that, you might find the log data there. Also log for a copy of your log file
name with “.~XL”

If the QSOs were FT8, then those Q’s will still be in your FT8 software.

Here's a longer explanation:

I have software that runs automatically once a week to download the latest
callsign changes from the FCC database. It specifically looks for callsigns
like this: KH6 call in lower-48 states, non-KL7 call in Alaska, etc. This
only really works well when the callsign is used by one ham.
The two things that the software doesn't do well are a) recognize canceled
callsigns, and b) recognize re-issued callsigns. KH6KW failed on both
fronts.

Every now and then (once every month or two), I will look for re-issued
callsigns. It's a semi-automated process. The software looks for callsigns
that were canceled (like KH6KW) to see if they have been re-issued after the
cancelation date. But it only looks for re-issued callsigns if the callsign
had previously expired or been canceled. KH6KW was not identified as a
canceled (or expired) callsign in my master database, so the process to
identify re-issued callsigns never checked KH6KW.

Someday when I have lots of free time, I am going to rewrite my FCC program.
I don't have that time now. The program is a little fragile, so I'm
reluctant to try to make small changes to it. It works 99% of the time, but
KH6KW fell into the other 1%. Plus, as I have discovered over the years,
the weekly data that the FCC provides has some idiosyncracies that are hard
to explain.

Re: [Dx4win] Mode Locked in RTTY

2022-08-10 Thread John, K9EL
There are many of us who use the same solution as Mike described - periodically
(could be after every QSO!) import the WSJT-X file. One way to make that
easier is to create a shortcut to the WSJT-X ADIF file on your desktop. Once
you navigate to the desktop the first time, the import window will open
subsequently on your desktop. Just click the shortcut and your FT8/FT4 etc
QSOs are imported with the proper mode designator.

There are two ways to deal with this:

1. From the Menu Bar at top: Radio > Ignore Mode in real time. This unlocks
the RTTY designation, but you must now enter the mode manually for every
QSO.

2. My solution is to just log any FT8 or MSK144 QSOs in WSJT-X and
periodically import wsjtx_log.adi into dx4win: File > Import/Export >
(select ADIF) > Import. Set the option for duplicate QSOs to "Duplicate
QSO is ignored".

Using data modes FT4/FT8 it recognises the mode only as RTTY which is locked

Is there any workaround?

Hi Folks,

I have been doing some work trying to integrate the OQRS users from Club Log
into the DX4WIN membership list that I update each week.
After a little trial and error, I was finally able to get it to work.
This adds an additional ~28k ClubLog OQRS users to the database. This will
make it easier for you to identify QSOs for which you can request
confirmation via Club Log:

Read 28159 good, 3227 invalid callsigns from clublog_users.json

I have uploaded a new membership list to the distribution area. When Paul
updates the county file, you should also see a new version of this file.

7/12/2022 16:17 2,313,743 members.dat

I'm going to let the Saturday data file update run as usual this week.
Then I will release a new version of the DX4WIN Data Updater for earlier
versions of DX4WIN. This will add the same functionality.

2022-06-13 Thread John K9EL
I work very hard to make sure the DX Marathon is scored properly. VK5 has
always been in Zone 30. I am a representative of CQ as well, so my scoring
database is very accurate.

How does DX4WIN determine DX Zones? By the country list? I have the latest
country list in my DX4WIN I just received my 2021 DX Marathon UBN results
back and I got dinged for entering VK5DOC for Z29. The VK5DOC qrz.com page
does not show what zone he is in. When I logged him in my DX4WIN log it was
entered as Z29, not Z30. The QSO is confirmed with LoTW. It shows him in
Z29, not Z30.

When I asked John K9EL, the contest manager, why I was dinged for a wrong
entry for Z29 here was his reply:
I also use DX4Win and if I enter VK5DOC, it says Zone 30.
I have never heard that any VK5 stations can be in Zone 29. I have been
doing this contest since 2008.

John may very well be right but why would my version of DX4WIN show
Z29 and his show Z30? I only have one entry for VK5DOC on 07/03/2021.
In my log for Z29 I have many VK6, VK8, and VK9 stations but only one VK5,
the VK5DOC shows as Z29.

It is a mystery to me.

Re: [Dx4win] FT4/8 not counting as digital

2022-01-30 Thread John, K9EL
The boxes to check are not in the Preferences section, but in the Awards
section.

Go to File - Awards.

There are tabs for DXCC, WAZ, etc. If you do not have FT8 and MFSK checked,
then FT8/4 QSO’s will not be counted for awards.

Re: [Dx4win] Help in searching

2022-01-09 Thread John, K9EL
There are multiple ways to search. Here is another good way - if you press F9
to clear the QSO window, then enter a prefix, such as SM. If you have the
country window open, you can click in any of the boxes and all the QSOs
associated with that box will appear in the logbook window.

For example, if I click on “20” it will show me all my SM 20m QSOs. if you
want to see all SM QSOs, double-click in the empty window above “PHO” and left
of the lowest band displayed.

Re: [Dx4win] Clearing all Label & LoTW entries

2021-10-02 Thread John K9EL
Brad,

Go to Preferences. QSO Tab. In the upper right is the "Label/Upl flag box.
Uncheck every item and there will no longer be any automatic "Y" in your
QSOs.

To get rid of existing "Y", I suggest you do go through the process of
printing all labels, but write them to a file instead of actual printing.
When done it will ask if you want all the "Y" flags cleared - say yes and
your done. Then just delete the file you created for your pseudo printing.

Hi.

A curious case has happened to me with my DX4WIN ver 8.05.

I created a new empty log file named AM8AM.dxl.

I entered 59 QSOs, each corresponding to a different DXCC entity.

But when requesting a report of the DXCC entities worked, only 50 entities
appear as worked. 9 entities, EA8, EA6, 3A, 3D2, A2, C3, V8,VE, ZA don't
appear in the report as worked.

Then I enter another EA8 QSO and now EA8 appears as worked.

I sent the am8am.dxl file to my friend EA8NQ, who also uses DX4WIN ver.
8.05, and when he requests a DXCC report from it, he gets all 59 worked
entities.

Any explanation?

Greetings...

Re: [Dx4win] QSO statistics

2021-02-15 Thread John K9EL
Chris,

DX4Win allows you to look at QSOs by country, by country and band, and by
country/band/mode.

For example, If I want to see how DL stations I have worked on 30m FT8, I
type DL in the callsign window - do not press enter or Tab or anything, just
enter DL in the callsign field.

The country window now shows C or W or M in each of the 3 modes, for each of
the bands.

If I double-click in the Digital box under the 30m heading, my logbook now
shows every DL station I have worked on 30m digital.

Subject: [Dx4win] QSO statistics

Hi all,

I have been using DX4WIN for quite some years now. But what I still haven't
found is an easy way to get QSO statistics like QSOs on band/mode in one
table without exporting all the log and importing it into another software.

Is there any hidden feature I haven't found so far or is it just not there?

Many thanks.

[Dx4win] FW: DX4WIN + WSJT-X COM Port Control

2021-02-05 Thread John K9EL

Mark,

I use DX4Win and I operate FT8. I run DX4Win, JTDX and WSJT-X at the same
time from my TS990 USB port.

I use port splitting software called VSPE. It is available at:
http://www.eterlogic.com/Products.VSPE.html

Any of the three programs can control (change) the frequency of my radio.
The VSPE software is very reliable.

I also have a Flex radio and Flex radios can create multiple software serial
ports, so VSPE software is not needed with a Flex.

Others have suggested solutions as well.

I have used DX4WIN for many years. I use WSJT-X for FT8.

I want both programs to have simultaneous full access to my transceiver
through the one COM port that is used for data transfer and control of the
transceiver.

I have tried many port sharing and port splitting software programs without
success. The two programs work for a few minutes, but when one of the
programs polls the port, the other program loses connection to the port.

Has anyone found a way to do what I want to accomplish?

I have been advised that Ham Radio Deluxe has the desired capability, but I
don't want to switch from DX4WIN to HRD.

Tnx & 73,

Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN 12month data collection!

2021-01-18 Thread John, K9EL
There are many DX4Win users who are active in the DX Marathon. There is no
easy way to look at both the current year plus overall in DX4Win. Only a few
logging programs allow you to track DX Marathon progress while still being able
to look at all years of QSOs.

I run DX4Win on 2 different PC’s - one running the current year and one running
all years.

For the rare countries, you can add certain prefixes in the Callsign Alert
window. You can also use the membership list, although it is not very
intuitive on using it for the DX Marathon.

Re: [Dx4win] Dx4Win spot window

2020-11-27 Thread John, K9EL
It is not currently possible to ignore spots that have been worked but not
confirmed.

If you are not worried about confirmations, then you can mark as a QSO as
confirmed and any posts for that country will be ignored if you set DX4Win as
N4QS described below.

Being able to ignore other levels of spots has been requested before as a new
feature, but obviously has not been implemented.

cannot make that happen. No matter what I try, he still gets spots in the
spot window for countries he has worked before. BTW, I have the box
unchecked that says "alert worked before countries".

For example, 7Q7RU is spotted on 10 20 & 160 FT8 and my friend has worked
Malawi B4 on both 10 & 20 FT8, but not 160, so he would want to see the 160

Cesar was asking about unique calls, what you've suggested would give you
all JA calls. Also, to do what you've suggested you need to us F8 in the QSO
window (search) and you'd want to put JA in the Prefix field, not the
callsign field. Even with a wildcard (JA*) in the callsign field you'd only
get calls matching exactly JA*, you would get things like JR, JH, etc.
However, with that said, you could use that to filter down then export from
logbook. Personally I'd just use F8, enter JA in the Prefix field and 80m in
the Band field. You'll have the results in the Logbook, which you can export
using "write to file". You'd then import the resulting CSV file and use one
of the spreadsheet programs to find the uniques. (There are other tools to
do that, but it seems like most folks have access to at least some form of
spreadsheet program.

Yes, very easy.

This is one of the things I love about DX4Win.

Open the country window.
Open the logbook window.
In the QSO window, type JA in the callsign field. Do NOT press Enter or Tab
or anything Double click "80" in the country window and your logbook will
contain only 80m JA QSO's.
Scroll down the logbook window and you will see how many JA's on 80 you have
worked.

Yes, as far as I know. 1.70 isn't really that new, see:

Re: [Dx4win] lost packet window

2019-12-23 Thread John K9EL
Go to your SAVE folder.

Open config.txt in a text editor.

Scroll down towards the bottom and look for [W-PACK]

Change LEFT to 0
Change TOP to 0

Save the changes.

Close DX4Win

Open DX4Win and the packet window should be in the upper left hand corner of
your screen.

Re-position to your favorite spot.

Go to File - Preferences - File - Write configuration file.

I recall seeing info about a clickable box in files>preferences>screen that
spoke to keeping or not keeping window positions. I think that must have
been for older versions, I see no such box with ver 9. Is there any such
setting in ver 9, as I have lost access to the packet window after upgrading
from win 7 to 10 with dual monitors etc. I have my spots window, but my
packet window is hiding somewhere. I don't really need it, as when I bring
up Dx4Win I automatically log in to a cluster and start getting spots, but I
would like to find the packet window :)

[Dx4win] FW: Callsign Alerts

2019-10-15 Thread John K9EL
Rory,

On the preferences page (File - Preferences), there is a section called
Packet 1. Inside Packet 1 there is a box called "Callsign Alert". You can
enter specific callsigns in that box.

When the callsign is detected by DX4Win, it is treated the same way as a new
country.

So if you have DX Alerts turned for New Country, then you will be alerted
for any callsign in the Callsign Alert box.

So, DX4Win will do alerts for specific callsigns. The feature works well -
I have used it for years.

One other feature I forgot to mention that is not in the release notes.

For users of DX4WIN 9.05 and later, the country file now contains an
extensive database of geographic coordinates by prefix. For example,
logging calls like UA4FBG and UA3RA will give more precise distance,
bearing, sunrise and sunset times. This is especially useful for beaming
countries that span a large geographic area, such as Russia, Canada, United
States, Argentina, etc. This is an easier way to get the information,
rather than having to go to the DX cluster and type "SH/SUN UA4FBG" or "SH/H
UA3RA". Grid squares, especially the 6-digit ones, as well as IOTA will
still override the prefix data, as they are typically even more accurate.

My WINDOWS drop down menu has these four selections with a check mark:

I do not see the IOTA and SAME CALL windows. The COUNTRY and WORLD MAP, as

I don't have any other windows open. Are they hidden beyond the edges of the

Subject: [Dx4win] Printer "setup" problem in v9.05?

Running on a PC running Windows 7 Pro.

I don't know if this a general problem or one related to, perhaps, my
printer (HP LJ 4000, parallel port connected).

If I click WINDOWS -> Logbook
Then Right click and click PRINT, then click Setup -> Landscape -> OK, then
OK to actually print, I get the Logbook printed in "Portrait" instead of
Landscape.

I did it twice and the same behavior.

For grins, I tried the same scenario using DX4WIN v9.01 on a different PC
and a different printer and it printed in landscape. Don't know if it
printed in Landscape because there is an issue with Setup on my HP LJ 4000?
Or if it is related to the DX4WIN version 0.05 vs v9.01.

Has anyone else seen this behavior?

73,
Lee N7NU

P.S. I upgraded from v9.04 to 9.05. DX4WIN restarted and I did the above
scenario. I did NOT re-boot between the upgrade and running the above
scenario. I'll reboot the PC tonight (when I get home) and see if that
makes a difference.

Hello Paul

Go to File>preferences>packet2

Check the enabled (this will make dx4win connected to clusters every time it
starts again)

Under node address write

VE7CC-1>Whonnock-BC,ve7cc.net

and put your call under Callsign

Exit and save. Maybe you need to re-start dx4win. Is it working now?

Hi Folks,

If you are using DX4WIN 8.05 or earlier, FO/JI1JKW will come up as Austral
Isl, FO/A. That is incorrect, he is Fiji during December
2018:

https://dxnews.com/foji1jkw-fakarava/

"Hiro, JI1JKW will be active as FO/JI1JKW from Fakarava Atoll,
 Tuamotu Archipelago, IOTA OC - 066, 23 - 26 December 2018."

DX4WIN 9.0x users will not have this problem.

This will be fixed in the next country file, before the end of the year.

Re: [Dx4win] Update Help Needed

2018-11-13 Thread John, K9EL
Jim and David,

Thank you for your emails.

DX4Win is allowed through the firewall and is installed in "C:\Ham
Programs". I have 3 PC's all with DX4Win running. After the power glitch
this morning, I did a fresh install of DX4Win V9.03 which is the latest on
the website. No matter what I tried I kept getting the error message when
I check for updates after I did a fresh install using 9.03.

So, I did a fresh install using a previous download of DX4Win 9.01 and all
works fine. I have no idea what the issue is with the 9.03 version on the
DX4Win website. I have done all the updates, so now all 3 PC's are running
9.04.1176 and update works fine.

I agree with Jim, and specifically, I believe the specific file is
http://www.dx4win.com/files/updatesv9/update.INF. You should be able to pull
that up in a browser. If you can, and if you still get the error inside of
DX4WIN, it's likely the Windows firewall blocking the application.

I just tried "Check for Updates" here and it worked. I suspect your
anti-virus/firewall isn't allowing DX4WIN to access the Internet for the
purpose of updating. I believe the "control file" is on the server, not
part of the DX4WIN installation.

Also make sure the installation directory is not under Program Files (x86).

I’m running Windows 10 Home and it looks like Home doesn’t let you execute the

From his email:

I got tired of navigating to the WSJT-X directory every time I wanted to import
my WSJT-X log into DX4WIN. Fortunately, Windows 10 has a solution. The idea
is to create a symbolic link in your SAVE directory that points to the WSJT-X
log directory. The full instructions for creating symbolic links are here:

https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/16226/complete-guide-to-

symbolic-links-symlinks-on-windows-or-linux/

Here's the quick start:

1. Start by opening a Command Prompt in Administrator mode. From the Start
menu, find "Windows System" and right-click on "Command Prompt'.

Follow the "More" link and then click "Run as Administrator".

2. Determine the location of your WSJT-X log directory. Here is one way:

cd %localappdata%

C:

dir

You should see a WSJT-X directory there. The full path should look
something like this:

C:\Users\jjrei\AppData\Local\WSJT-X

3. Now determine the location of your DX4WIN SAVE directory. Mine is here:

E:\dx4w903\save

4. "cd" into your DX4WIN save directory:

cd E:\dx4w903\save

E:

5. Finally, create the link. Here is the command I used:

E:\dx4w903\save> mklink /D WSJT-X C:\Users\jjrei\AppData\Local\WSJT-X

(do not type the part *before* the >, only the part beginning with "mklink"

That's all there is to it. The next time you want to import using "File |
Import", you will see the WSJT-X link in your SAVE directory.

Double-click on that link, and you'll find your WSJT-X ADIF file there.

This is not limited to WSJT-X, you can create links to anything you want.

Yes, no problem. I import the WSJT-X adi file all the time. I used AD1C’s
file shortcut recommendation to make it easier. A couple clicks and your QSO’s
are in DX4Win. When you import, DX4Win asks you want you want to do about

You can create a date filter for the exact dates you want and then export to

Re: [Dx4win] DX4Win - Elecraft K3 - Remote Rig

2018-02-21 Thread John, K9EL
My laptop is connected to the Remote Rig box on the K3/0, so certainly there is
no RF issue there. But if ultimately DX4Win must detect connectivity back to
the K3 itself, RF could be an issue. In my case, it is not RF as the
connection to the rig drops whether I am transmitting or not.

I will have to study exactly how the Remote Rig boxes work and then figure out
a solution. It is a pain to constantly lose the rig connection, and sometimes
I am connected for 5 minutes and sometimes for hours.

I will increase the Max Tries to 6 and set the poll rate to 1000 and see if
that helps.

The K3/K3-0 are about 2000 miles apart and both on Comcast. Neither end has a
fixed IP, but neither IP has changed for months.

John and Kostas,

I also have a K3/0 mini and I am glad to hear this problem happens to other
users. (No, not really!) My case is a little different. I never have a
problem with DX4WIN at the control site losing connection to the K3 at the
remote site. Stays connected -- rock solid for hours on end. I think I set
the poll rate at only 2000 ms and set max tries to 3.

My problem is with N1MM+. It loses connection quite frequently -- about once
or twice an hour on a good day. That will typically throw me out of run mode
and I must right click on the band map to Reset Radios. I figured that N1MM+
is somehow polling the radio differently than DX4WIN. There is a setting to
slow the polling 50% and 100% versus normal, but the same thing happens on all
three settings. N1MM+ does not have a way to increase Max Tries -- so that may
be the problem. I have recently sent my issue to the N1MM+ reflector with no
response.

Another ham in our local contest club mentioned that he once had the same issue
and his problem ended up being RF getting into the computer cables. He cured
it by adding toroid filters to the cables. Since DX4WIN works fine, I am not
sure that is the answer to my problem. But it could be yours -- think about if
there is any chance RF is getting into the pc.

Let me know what you find out.

I use a Kenwood 480 with remoterig and happens to me also. I believe the
problem is that when dx4win looses cat control, deactivate the cat control (com
port). Cat control via internet looses some packets from time to time. Dx4win
thinks that lost the cm port and deactivate it.

I use the same setup with writelog also. When writelog looses the cat control
the freq freezes, writelog continues to work and after some seconds finds again
the radio.

Some others users complain about the same: Dx4win pop up a message every time
it looses the CAT control - com port. Writelog behaviour would be much better
to have.

Re: [Dx4win] Merging country files

Walt,

One recommendation I have for everyone is to periodically upload your entire
log (via ADIF) to ClubLog. Even if you never use a single feature in Club Log,
it is a great place to store your log. You can download an ADIF of your log
at any time.

I made to DXCC was in 1992, I lost the certificates, cards, computer data,

for bands and modes they only kept track of the 1st QSO for that country and
it's band and mode

dummy QSO's
for those confirmed countries, using a dummy call sign including band and

Re: [Dx4win] Databases

2017-11-24 Thread John, K9EL
Jim - thank you again many times for your incredible work on the country
database and QSL manager database. I have found no reason to edit those
files for years. Your database has to be the most comprehensive and
accurate callsign database to be found! Those of us who use DX4Win are
soo fortunate that we have access to your work.

If you think something is wrong with or missing from the country file, QSL
manager/addresses or Custom Awards databases, please let me know with as
much detail as possible and I'll look into it.

Re: [Dx4win] DX0P

2017-11-17 Thread John, K9EL
Did you click on the actual QSO’s?If you just enter DX0P, it will come up
as DU. But if you have a DX0P QSO in the correct date range, it should come up
as Spratly. I just checked my log on V9.03 and DX0P comes up as Spratly when I
click on an actual QSO in the log.

There are others having issues with F8 as well. Something did change in

Re: [Dx4win] DX4Win Stopped Working

2017-11-06 Thread John, K9EL
DX4Win was connected through port 7300 to the VE7CC program and was working
just fine. The Auto-connect box in Packet2 was checked. Everything was
working fine. I clicked on Help, Check for Updates. I did the updates,
DX4Win shut down and re-started. VE7CC was still running. It did not
auto-connect, nor could I manually initiate the connection to VE7CC.

I restored DX4Win from yesterday (except my log, of course) and all is fine
again.

Could be an issue with my PC and my permissions.

I just tested this and had no issues. Silly question: Was VE7CC actually
running at the time you ran into the issue?

Also, I was under the impression that the Packet Window doesn't actually close
(I could definitely be wrong about that.)

I will have to completely un-install DX4Win and start all over again.

That's exactly right. If you sort by time, duplicates on the same
band/mode within a certain time window are filtered out. Only the
most recent spot is shown.

If you sort by arrival, you'll see all spots as they arrive. DX4WIN
has always worked this way.

Glenn,

Easy for 60 meters - go the Awards section and check 60m. Then when you go
to reports, simply select 60m.

No easy way that I know of to get FT8 only countries unless you assign all
FT8 QSO's to a specific group and then select that group as a filter.

Re: [Dx4win] Spots to ignore: Gray and Black

2017-11-04 Thread John, K9EL
This is a long time request and I agree 100%. The box that says to ignore
gary and black spots is misleading as the colors have nothing to do with it.
If you change P6 or any other level to Gray or Black, they will not be
ignored. Having the various levels is fantastic and is much appreciated,
but I would love the flexibility to ignore the levels of my choice.

A small enhancement request, please Paul

The "Spots to ignore: Gray and Black" setting ignores gray and black spots
in the packet window - these are the P8 or P9 spots that are by default,
gray or black.

It would make the filtering so much more powerful if this setting also
ignored spots that are set by the user to be gray or black. For example I
would like to hide P6 and P7 spots by setting them as gray on white in the
Preferences.

Unless I am missing something, of course.

Thanks

·Check for a valid US state when updating from callbook

·Other windows did not update when modifying callsign

Paul was able to determine that this is a migration problem from a v7 log
directly to a v9 log. If the log is migrated from v7 *through v8* then to v9,
the award status flags are maintained.

None of the beta testers noticed this because we all started from 8.05 logs
when we tested 9.01!

I assume this will be fixed in a future update.

John,

Windows 10 treats *.chm (compiled help files) as executable.
Use Windows Explorer to navigate to the folder containing the help file,
right click on the help file and make sure the file is "unblocked".

[Dx4win] Comment on Version 9

2017-10-21 Thread John, K9EL

Obviously each person is entitled to their opinion. It is true that 9.01
does not add any revolutionary features. However, there are many of us
that have used DX4Win for a very long time and enjoy how the software works.
It is easy to use and we know it well. Version 8 was getting old and was
missing some key features that have evolved since Version 8 was published.
Version 9 solves my concerns with Version 8 and adds some very nice
features. I was not expecting or wanting a revolution - I wanted DX4Win to
be modern and up to date - thank you Paul for doing exactly that. $35 is a
very small price to pay for software that I use every day. If you review
the detailed list of changes, there are a lot of enhancements.

Hi Mike,

Yes, I did that, but then found that I had to select QRZ Online from the
drop down menu under Data Source at the top. Now it works great. This is a
very nice feature -- especially how you can update and populate the QSO
fields by clicking on one button. Very nice enhancement. Thank you Paul!

Paul talked about all the new features.

I would like to note some long awaited features which I liked most in 901:

-> Auto connect in clusters

-> xml data with QRZ.com plus alt+f3 opens direct the browser to qrz!

-> Separate DXCC application either via LotW either via paper cards.

-> Auto update for files and dx4win.

-> new modes and reports (for the ft8 funs - I hate this mode... :) )

-> new search! Alt+f8 and you can search for data, phone, cw

-> in QSL methods added OQRSd (direct) and OQRSb (buro)

and much more according Paul's email...

Program Files is for 64 bit programs.
Program Files (x86) is for 32 bit programs.

I would suggest a new install and it will install in the 32 bit folder.

As a short term measure I want to transfer my DX4WIN V7 from my Xp machine
to a W7 machine. (I will then do the upgrade to V8 a little later)

I think I have seen that I can just copy the whole folder from one machine
to the other, is this correct or does it not apply if changing from Xp to
W7?

In Xp the folder is in c:Program Files
In W7 there are two folders.. Program Files and Program Files (x86) which
folder do I use?

Re: [Dx4win] vcruntime140.dll missing

2017-04-05 Thread John, K9EL
Jim has addressed this issue in detail on his DX4Win page. Since the new
version of the Updater is a lot smaller, it needs an additional Microsoft
file to be installed on your computer. It is quite easy to do and once it
is installed, you will never receive the error again.

You can get all info here: http://dx4win.ad1c.us/updater/#quick_start

I had the same message, downloaded and installed the file and all is well.

I had this issue the last time I used the Updater and it resulted in a
corrupted log file after futzing with the recommend fix. Fortunately I do
regular backups so nothing was lost.

[Dx4win] How to delete KH4 and KH7K from DX4Win as a current counter

2017-03-31 Thread John, K9EL
Do not delete the countries from the database!

Simply add an end date.

1. Close your current log file
2. Go to File - Databases - Countries
3. Click Country, then Find
4. Scroll to Kure Island
5. Double-click on Kure Island
6. KH7K should show in the upper left hand corner
7. Enter August 26, 2016 in the End Date box (08/26/2016 or 26/08/2016
depending on your setting)
8. Click on Country, then Update (very important)
9. Click on Country, then Find
10. Scroll to Midway Is
11. Double Click on Midway Island
12. Add august 26, 2016 to End Date box
13. Click Country, then Update
14. Click File, then Save Changes and Exit

If you do a Report, Summary, your DXCC available total should now show 337.

Re: [Dx4win] up grade to new PC

2017-01-02 Thread John, K9EL
Glenn,

You can install the 8.05 exe file directly on your Win10 PC without any
prior versions being present. As long as you have a license key, it will
work fine.

I don't believe there is any difference between an upgrade file or a full
version other than the price. And the author is the one to determine if you
qualify for the upgrade price.

Currently using Ver 6.05 with older XP PC

Purchased a new Win 10 PC , if I try to use my old 6.05 disk to install on
the new win10 machine, I get the message about the Port Driver is needed or
not found. My new machine has no serial port, I will go wireless with that.

I want to upgrade from 6.05 to 8.05

My old machine should not be a problem upgrading there.
However how do I get the upgrade on the new win 10 pc when there is no
DX4WIN installed there to the port driver requirement.

The full version is $90 and the upgade is $40 , so a sizeable amount,
considering the CDN dollar sucks.

Any suggestions how I might proceed ??

Thanks , Glenn VA3DX

Also, you can select how much information you want to see in the logging
window by hitting F5 - if you do not need to see all that info all the time,
you can make the window shorter (width unchanged).

Hi Joe !
I cannot help you on the first question, but on the second one, the answer
is that you must play with the scale factor in File/Preferences/Screen.
But changing this to make it bigger will increase all your windows sizes.

Re: [Dx4win] JT65A

2016-08-10 Thread John, K9EL
If you download and install VSPE from Eterlogic, you can share one Com Port
with two different pieces of software, thus negating the need to turn off
radio control of DX4Win when using other software. I use VSPE for DX4Win
and Radio Control software on the same single com port.

Subject: Re: [Dx4win] JT65A

Cort,

I use WSJT-X for JT65. It is also available as a free download. I setup
both WSJT-X and DX4WIN to run off of the same com port. But I do not run
them at the same time. When I want to work JT65, I click on Radio in DX4WIN
and click on Stop Radio, but I keep DX4WIN open. This disconnects DX4WIN
from the radio and opens up the com port.

I then open WSJT-X and it automatically connects to the radio. When I am
finished making a JT65 contact, the QSO is saved to the wsjt.log file. I
then import the log file into DX4WIN. Just go to File, Import/Export, make
sure ADIF is selected at the top, click on Import, go find the WSJT file in
your directory, double click on it, then when the window for Options for
Duplicates pops up, select Ignore Duplicate QSO. This will ensure that you
only import any new JT65 QSOs into your DX4WIN log.

Since the signal reports from WSJT-X incorrectly go into the Notes for this
Call field, I then cut and paste to move the signal report information from
that field to the Notes for this QSO field.

When I am done working JT65, I close WSJT-X -- which frees up the com port.
I then click on Radio in DX4WIN and Start Radio to connect the radio back to
DX4WIN. Again, not elegant but effective. BTW, it is fun to work weak
signal JT65 on 6m as well as the other HF bands. So you should give it a
try.

It would be great if Paul would someday start enhancing DX4WIN again. I am
sure many of us would like to see an automatic interface between WSJT-X and
DX4WIN like there is for MMTTY. We also need DX4WIN to support JT9 as a
mode. I might also add that an automatic interface for Fldigi would be
great for the many other digital modes currently available. But Paul has
been strangely inactive and incommunicado for five or six years now.

For the time being, this is a workaround that is cumbersome but pretty
foolproof. Good luck.

73,

Dave, N4QS

it might be something worth while to look into. So, I down loaded WSJT and
have it installed but looks to be very confusing to be sure. So any help on
getting me started would be appreciated. I also down loaded the instructions
and I can tell this is going to take some time and effort to get it all
playing correctly. I use DX4WIN for my general logging so maybe I would have
to have both programs open at the same time? Thanks, Cort K4WI
