Re: [Dx4win] wish list!

2020-08-10 Thread Tim moore
On number 3, you must have an issue with something in your
setup/implementation. It already does what you describe you WANT it to do.
IE, whatever size I have it set to, that's the size it opens in every time.
I just went and resized it, closed it, opened it.over and over
againtrying every possible different size. It always opens in whatever
the size was the last time you were in the program. Once you select a size
of the Log Entry window, it opens up in that size (you selected) every
timeunless you change it to open in another size. And then, of course,
it would open in that size from that point on. So number 3 is already just
as you say you want it.

Re: [Dx4win] Comments in logbook?

2020-06-24 Thread Tim moore
OK, that's indeed a good point. It likely would be hard to find notes in
random QSOs. I've never tried searching on those fieldsand I wouldn't
be surprised (don't have the software in front of me here on the work
laptop) if there is no search capability on the existing Notes fields.

2020-06-20 Thread Tim moore
I might be missing your pointbut there aere already two fields in the
QSO window for each QSO made. Notes for this QSO and Notes for this Call
(if I remember correctly, I don't have the program loaded on this
computer). So are you talking about some other kind of comments? I use them
frequently. When I work someone with the same radio as me, I'll put a
comment in the QSO in one of those fields. When I get a new radio, I add
comments like "first 6 meter contact on new FT991A"or "he's using same
microphone as me"and on and on, etc, etc.

So are you talking about something different? Because there are already TWO
comment fields as the software already is. So I'm a bit confused what you
are asking foris it something different....

I'm doing it, except with HDSDR. There are several keys. The order you
start the programs, the polling rates, and the Virtual Com splitter

all working, but I did. You've got my number, give me a ring.

Re: [Dx4win] Fw: Re: Very Satisfied with DX4WIN

2020-04-16 Thread Tim moore
ted input. Back to coding again.
And again. And again. Every time you think you finally have it right, you
think of another negative thing that can be entered that breaks the code.
Regression testing is long and tediousif done right. Usually you try to
automate all regression testing...using something like HP ALM Quality
Center or the like. You write test scripts to automate as much of that
Regression testing as possible to save some time. And finally, of course,
Capability Integration Testing (CIT). Does the new stuff the customer
demandedand I codedactually WORK! Of course ...if notback to
coding. Of course if CIT breaks something and I recode, that could break
something that worked beforeeven something that worked after ROT
testing. So even bringing as few as 6-10 new REQUIREMENTS to marketcan
take anywhere from 6-18 months in my experience.

Note I said REQUIREMENTS. Often what customers want are NOT requirements,
but rather capabilities. Requirements are defined as SINGULAR testable
items. They stand alone. Saying I want a chrome carb cover would be a
requirement. Saying I want a V8 engine (with that chrome carb cover) would
be a capability, which would require possibly 100s of requirements to build
that capability. That of course, takes alot of time coding and testing (and
rework to refine and get it right).

So yea.a small software company has to decide on their
prioritieshow much time and effort can they spend...is the risk worth
the rewardetc. I knowI've lived that life (on a somewhat larger
scale I suppose). I still do today. I run the CIE environment where the US
Air Force does ALL their software testing and development. I have over 75
Programs with multiple software products and 1000s of users each doing test
and development. That's why I can say...from knowledge and
experiencefor the money I paid (and if memory serves me rightin the
25+ years I've used the product.I've only been required to pay 2 or 3
timesand the payment was pretty darn small for the reward I
got)I've MOREMORE than got my money's worth and I'm a very happy
camper.

And if I weren't, I'd contact the Vendorvoice my concerns. If I didn't
get satisfaction that way, I'd research other products...and if need
bemove on.

I'm happily staying right here. Some won't, so be it. And some will no
doubt leave.and eventually come back IFI say IFthat grass aint
greener in the other pasture.

73and please take this for what it's worth. My opinion, and that's all.
I don't work for DX4WIN. I just use the product (happily). If you don't
agree, no sweatagree to disagree. Just please be civil about it, that's
all I'd ask. Some of the private emails I got after my initial post were
kind of over the top. It's just a logging program after all, we've surely
all got "bigger fish to fry" in life than to argue about a radio program
with animosity? Again, I just thought it was time some of us that LOVE the
product for what it ismore than what it could bespoke up and
said so. I respect that some of you don't share my enthusiasm for the
product. Please respect that I do like and support it.albeit maybe from
a little different background/perspective than many here.

To those "leaving" DX4WIN.I'll say Goodbye to you, adios.and
hope you find greener grass in other pastures.

Me, I'm delighted with DX4WINhave been for .I can't count how
many years25 or more I do believe. I have worked in the IT
industry for over 35 years as an Electrical Engineer and the last
almost 10 years in Software Development. No software is PERFECT. I see
updates/patches from DX4WIN often. I've gotten support any time I
needed it. I've gotten MORE than what I paid for. Do they implement
EVERY function or capability that every customer asks for? NO. No
software does that. They all have pros and constrade-offs.

So I'm delighted with DX4WIN and what it offers and I'm going
absolutely nowhere. For those leaving, bye bye baby. Don't let the
door hit ya' on the way out...you're free to spend your money
anywhere you like. I hope you find happinessbut for some, after
dealing with customers for many, many years in this industry.I
know some of you will never be satisfied. That's just the way it
is..

Just figured with so many vocal folks voicing their opinion out there
and complainingit was time some of us who love the product spoke
up. We're free to do that and support it too, of course.just like

Re: [Dx4win] Disappearing notes, qsl info window when I hit F5 button

2020-04-15 Thread Tim moore
Each time you hit F5 it changes what you see in the QSO window. Try hitting
F5 several timescycle thru the different QSO window viewsuntil you
see what you saw before.

Re: [Dx4win] Lost packet connection

2020-04-06 Thread Tim moore
It would probably require more information to pin point what it could be.
You'd need to show your config for the packet.are the clusters you're
trying active (my favorite one goes down sometimes. And sometimes, my first
3 or 4 choices are down...but I keep trying to I get one that does work).
So what is your packet configuration?

You have to configure and enable that pop-up window. The configuration is

The Lookup window or external data pop-up window comes up after entering
JUST F3. Alt F3 actually brings up the external data source, as in the QRZ
website. F3 on the other hand brings up the other pop-up window, and from
there you can right click and chose the automatic update choice

The Lookup or external data pop-up window you get when you enter F3 from

Re: [Dx4win] Call Sign/Name look up

2020-01-01 Thread Tim moore
OK, after some experimenting, I see what this command REALLY does. It does
NOT automatically populate the QSO window (which is what I thought KE9L was
asking foras in enter a callsign in the QSO windowand the name and
address info fill in the QSO window "automatically"). Rather, what this
command does is allows you to "automatically" populate the EXTERNAL data
popup window (also called the "Lookup Window")IFyou already have it
open (as in, you entered the callsign in the QSO windowthen ALSO hit F3
to bring up the external data popup window). Now when you scroll between
callsigns you have already enteredit updates the info in the external
popup window. Or if you entered a callsign in the QSO window.ANDyou
have already opened that external popup window (again, by additionally
entering F3)then yes, the external window would be updated with the
info of the callsign you entered. To have the info populate the QSO window,
you would still have to take the extra step of hitting "update QSO". It
isn't going to populate the QSO window "automatically"just the external
data popup window.

So, depending on what KE9L was asking, the answer may actually be "hit F3"
to get the info to pop upand then if you also want it in the QSO
window...hit "Update QSO".

I got excited for a second there when I thought that command was going to
automatically update the info in QSO window!

Re: [Dx4win] Call Sign/Name look up

2020-01-01 Thread Tim moore
I tried that, and nothing happened. Is that supposed to automatically
populate the QSO window if you merely type in a call sign? It didn't work
for meand I have a QRZ subscription. F3 brings up the pop up
window with the info. If i hit "update QSO" from the popup window,
thenit will populate the QSO window. But "automatic update" from the
external data popup window does't seem to work?

Re: [Dx4win] World Map won'open

2020-01-01 Thread Tim moore
I think someone might have mentioned this, but it bears repeating. Try
going into the config file, and just like the lost packet or spot window
trick... find the map portion of the configuration and try setting the top
and left settings to ZERO. That might bring it back. For me, when I lost
both my spot window and packet window, this trick did not work, and the
only thing that worked for me was to put the monitors back in their
original configuration and then I physically moved the windows to where I
could see them again in the new monitor configuration.

There is a setting to get audio alerts too as I recall. Also, multiple
times in the last year for whatever reason, windows 10 sometimes
changes my audio source and my alerts stop having audio. I go into windows
audio settings and change it back to my external speakers and all is well
again for several months ... until the next time windows mysteriously
changes it again. Go figure

Re: [Dx4win] New Country Question

2019-12-26 Thread Tim moore
I would say it depends on how you have it set up in Preferences. I have
mine set up to spot depending on status with different colors. One color
means "worked on that band, but not that mode (ie CW vs SSB)". One color
means haven't worked on this band at all (but have worked on other bands).
One color means new country, as in never worked it on any band/mode. Oh,
and one set of colors may indicate worked, but NOT confirmed yet. Etc. I
have red, green, blue, and yellow spots (background color), as well as red
and green spots (word font color, with white background) for spots I've
worked but not confirmed. I have mine set so that black indicates worked
and confirmedand in facti've set my spots to therefore ignore spots
in black that i have indeed worked and confirmed, as I don't care to work
them again.

But again, it all depends on what you've set in preferences. You can pick
what you want to spotwhat colorwith whatever matches you want.

This is exactly what I talked about doing in my email, and as I said

Re: [Dx4win] lost packet window

2019-12-23 Thread Tim moore
When I added a second monitor and then later removed it, I lost both the
packet window and the spot window (which I'd moved both windows to the 2nd
monitor). I tried editing the config file like an earlier email suggested
to move the windows, but no joy. In the end, I had to reattach the second
monitor...move the 2 windows back to the first monitor, and then remove the
2nd monitor again.

And while this might seem obvious, of course, if you don't have any DX
spots in the spot window, there won't be any bandmap to show. While it

You can exportADIF is the first/ top choice and then hit export again.
I'm at work and can't look at DX4WIN to give you exact details. But you
just want to export in an ADIF format.

Re: [Dx4win] I don't see DX4WIN reading the freq of my 7300

2019-04-18 Thread Tim moore
I'd get with someone who has a 7300 hooked up to DX4WIN (and the 7300 is a
VERY popular radio, so there has to be LOTS of folks with that
combination!) and compare configs. That said, does your radio really
support that baud rate of 115200? Mine does NOT, It only goes up to 38400..
And again, my setup (which of course is different, because it's for a Yaesu
FT DX 3000but some things remain constant between most radios/comm
ports/software logging apps) makes me wonder where you got some of the
numbers/config.Where did you get that address of 94 hex? Does your poll
rate (5000) match the poll rate in your radio menu? does your baud (115200)
match on ALL THREE PLACES: radio menu, DX4WIN (we see that it is what that
is set to) and also on the port on your laptop/computer? the key is
EVERYTHING has to matchthe settings in the radio menuthe settings
in DX4WINand any settings on the port you are attached to on the
computer/laptop. I'd check ALL three places...that things like baud rate,
comm port, poll rate (only applies to the radio and DX4WINnot the
computer port), DTR, RTSare all set to the SAME THING. For instance, my
radio requires RTS to be set to HIGH. And mine requires NOTHING to be
configured in the Address (where you have 94 Hex). Mine will only go to
38400.and i have all three places set to 38400the radio (via the
menu option), the port on the laptop AND DX4WIN (in preference). All three
places have to match...and can only be set to a rate that all three places
support.

Forgive me if the above was to "obvious", but I've learned in trouble
shooting over 40 years in the comm/IT business (and often...like this
case...with the proverbial "3000 mile screwdriver" as we say in the
business, because I'm not there to physically see your setup)...never
assume anything, no matter how obvious it may or may not be to one person
or the other! Again, get someone with a 7300 on the DX4WIN forum to share
settings.or check the things I mention.

Of course if you do that, you'll no longer be able to go click on a spot
and have your radio automatically tune to the frequency and correct mode of
the spot ( if you have your radio linked to your computer).

Re: [Dx4win] Contest log program

2019-02-18 Thread Tim moore
I run multiple programs at the same time on the one serial control line to
my radio using a virtual serial port application. It allows you to run
multiple programs at one time off of one line to your radio. It can be
challenging to get multiple programs set up and running off of the virtual
serial port application, but well worth it.

Re: [Dx4win] External Data

2019-02-07 Thread Tim moore
At the BOTTOM of the pageafter going to File>Preferences>Ext Data:
(copied from my 9.x versionbut this should be the same in your version)

FirstI think this gives the capability to look up callsign info on QRZ
via *YOUR WEB BROWSER* using the *ALT F3* key combination

*Website callsign lookup:*

X Enabled

Address – http://www.qrz.com/db/

Then this critical partwhich gives the F3 (and JUST the F3 key, as
opposed to the ALT F3 mentioned above) key it's function: (for the callsign
popup windowwhich is what I think you're trying to get)

*Online callsign lookup:*

*X Enabled*

*Initial callsign lookup:*

http://xmldata.qrz.com/xml/current/?username=[USERNAME];password=[PASSWORD];agent=[PROGRAM
*]*

*Callsign lookup address:*

http://xmldata.qrz.com/xml/current/?s=[SESSIONID];callsign=[CALLSIGN*]*

*User info: **Your Callsign hereie ...NS4J*

*Password:* *Your password for logging on QRZ here*

Do NOT put ANYTHING in the URL's where it says USERNAME and PASSWORD and
PROGRAM and SESSIONID and CALLSIGN. Leave the URL's EXACTLY as I have
posted them here. ONLY put your callsign and password DOWN BELOWwhere
it asks for "user Info" and "Password". This is working for me
perfectly.both for web browser lookups using Chrome on the QRZ site
when hitting ALT F3and for getting just the address info using JUST the
F3 key in the QSL info popup window.

I'm at work right now and don't have access to my DX4WIN app. But I'll look
when I get home (if someone else hasn't answered). You have to have the
correct URL (and you may or may not have that correct)and you have to
have your correct login userid (think that's your callsign) and the correct
password from your QRZ login. In fact, if memory serves me correctly, there
may be two URLs you have to enter? Again, I'll have it EXACTLY when i get
home in a few hours and check.

Maybe someone else will answer before me

I'd try connecting to another Cluster address. That happens to my favorite
Cluster from time to time.when they are down. I just go to another
cluster in the listbingoproblem solved. Later when my
favorite/local cluster comes back up, I'll connect to it again. It's most
likely your favorite cluster is simply down right now.

Re: [Dx4win] QRZ xml service

2019-01-21 Thread Tim moore
If you're talking about QRZ website callsign lookups, there is a
limit.IF...you are not a Subscriber. The limit is 100 per day if you
are NOT an XML Subscriber. If you do subscribe (it's 25 per year I think
for basic XML service), then the number of lookups is indeed UNLIMITED. But
non subscribers are limited per dayand I'm pretty sure the limit is 100
per day.

Re: [Dx4win] Need help with rotor control

2019-01-05 Thread Tim moore
You have to do what you did or hit F11 for shortpath. There are other
variations of a function Key for things like longpath, etc. It doesn't
rotate just because you grabbed a spot. You can also program it to know
which antennas are rotatable and which aren't. Also, you have to be in the
qso window for things like F11 to work.

Re: [Dx4win] Little problem noticed

2018-12-19 Thread Tim moore
The F3 search into sites like QRZ hasn't kept the search data in the log
for sometime now. One Known Problem and Workaround (KP) is to save the
QSO, then research on the data and add it to the existing QSO using F10 to
finally save the data.

That issue has been around for a while now.

And with that configuration, using a USB port as a serial port, you'll need
to go into that port in Windows and make sure you have it set to be a
virtual serial port with the settings that match.

Yes to a specific comm Portthe one that matches the comm Port you are
using to connect from your PC/ laptop to your radio. Yes to a specific data
rate/ speed...the one you have set in the ftdx 5000 menu ( I use 38400,
which is supported in my ftdx 3000 menu and I'm sure is also on your
5000 under the heading of cat rate). You also have to match either DTR
or CTSI think it's DTR bit I'll have to check. Probably should be set
to high most likely.

Re: [Dx4win] packet nodes

2018-10-22 Thread Tim moore
You can edit the list by going into the cluster file in the SAVE folder.
It's a .txt fill. I put my favorites at the top of the listand then all
of the others below. You could even delete the ones you never use. Or even
make a backup file with all of them, while the file you actually use could
only have the few you use all the time. You can always go back to the
backup file...and often the cluster list fille gets updated anyway.

Related, you can go into preferencs and set the cluster you want to
automatically connect to every time at startup.

Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN and QRZ Lookups

2018-05-16 Thread Tim moore
Yes...DX info is also compiled in the pop up window after hitting
F3.BUT REPEATINGyou MUST:

1. have it configured.in the Preferences.to include having it
ENABLEDand .THIS IS IMPORTANTyou HAVE to have those EXACT URL
links i typed up for you.in the proper window in the Preferences. Get
those URLs wrong..and it doesn't work. I'd COPY WHAT I SENT YOU AND
PASTE IT IN the proper windowswhich i have labeled for you.
2. Have a callsign placed in the QSO window that you want to work or
lookup.
3. Have your cursor IN THE QSO window (again, NOTHING will happen if you
aren't in the QSO window)then hit F3 (Alt F3, would bring up your web
browser and QRZ web pageIFyou have that configured properly in
Preferencesin the area ABOVE the info you are configuring for this
feature)
4. BE CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET (i know, should be obvious.butI've
had some ask or have issues with that too..)

When you do all that, it works .SORT OF. Yes, it will grab EITHER DX or
Stateside info.IFit is listed in QRZ. It will give you a blank pop
up window if QRZ has no listing on the callsign, of course. It won't work
if you aren't a member of QRZ or put in a wrong callsign/password combo.

Now, the glitch...as I mentioned beforeis that the info WILL indeed
populate in the QSO windowwhen WITH YOUR CURSOR IN THE POPUP WINDOW
(with the callsign info from QRZ)...you hit "Update QSO Info" in the bottom
right corner of that window). BUTbecause of a glitch in 9.x version of
DX4WIN, it will NOT save it. As i mentioned before, the KP as we say in
the software development worldis to bring up that QSOAGAINand
do the Update QSO Info thing AGAINand THIS TIME, hit F10 and then
saveand it will KEEP the info in the file. that's the glitch. They're
working on getting that fixed.

But all else works as described above...

If you hit F3 it brings up a Window with all that same info (IF.you
have it configured correctly to do so under Preferences>Ext Data>Online
Callsign Lookup). You have to have not only the proper URL info for
QRZbut also your password and userid for QRZ. Once you get that
configured right in Preferencesand you hit JUST F3 (not Alt F3that
brings up your web browser and the QRZ website)...then "Update QSO" in the
bottom right corner of the popup windowit will populate that info into
the QSO window. HOWEVER, currentlythere is a known bugwhere the
info gets lost when you enter/save the QSO. The KP (known problems and
workarounds)is to bring that QSO back up AGAIN after saving ithit
F3 againhit "update QSO" again...but THIS time, hit F10 and it will
repopulate that same info again. THIS timesaving itit will stay.

They are supposed to be working on a fix for that.

Re: [Dx4win] Error messages

2018-04-26 Thread Tim moore
Those error messages would indicate the comm port you have chosen in
Preferences>Radio is not correct or available. Do you have the program
linked to your radio? Do you have it configured correctly for the comm port
for your radio?

Re: [Dx4win] Question on the ver 9

2018-04-09 Thread Tim moore
Another thing in Preferences >Screen is to set the Scale Factor to 150
(default is 100). This will make that window bigger. Also, you can
experiment with the fonts and font sizes for the 3 different listings
Heading, Input and Listbox. I've found that also changes window sizes.
Even setting Bold on for one or two of those windows, changes the
size/appearance of not JUST the text, but also...in some casesthe
window itself. I wanted to move the Packet Window and DX Spots window to my
second monitor screenand put them above my HDSDR software radio
application. My second Monitor screen is larger and easier for me to read.
I wanted those two windows to be larger and easier to read at a glance. I
kept playing with fonts and font sizes until i got EVERYTHING to look
better. I also wanted the main window (the window you were talking about
changing) to be larger and easier to read at a glance. I'm running Scale
Factor at 150, Font sizes for the three items at 10 or 11and no longer
running Fixedsys for a font (instead running fonts like Arial) I'm running
2 of the 3 items as Bold, which also makes a difference. I'm at work, so I
can't tell you EXACTLY the combinationsbut try playing with these
settings, it makes a pretty big difference on window sizes.

[Dx4win] Yaesu FT DX 1200 interface with DX4WIN

2018-02-16 Thread Tim moore
I’ve been working with Paul (I believe that’s the name)…on getting my Yaesu
FT DX 1200 to interface properly with DX4WIN. He recently sent me a new
radio file for the 1200…based on the Yaesu FT DX 3000 I do believe. Anyway,
everything works well….EXCEPT….when you grab a DX Spot off a cluster, every
“odd” time you grab a spot, it sets the VFO B to “lock”. In other words,
grab your first spot…..VFO B suddenly shows locked (which you can clear it
by hitting the CLEAR button). Grabbing a SECOND spot, toggles the VFO B
back to “unlocked”. And so on.

The only real issue with VFO B being locked is if you are working split….of
course, you can’t change the VFO B frequency….which is your TX freq. This
can of course be an issue when you’re trying to select the correct TX freq
to work the DX station split. Again, you have to hit the CLEAR button to
unlock VFO B….that’s the KP (Known Problems and Workarounds) ….as we call
it in the software industry.

So, has anyone with a 1200 interfacing with DX4WIN played with the radio
file settings and got that VFO B lock to stop happening? For that matter,
is everyone else with this SAME configuration having that issue?

Thanks, K4TK
