[Dx4win] Update on Updater

2012-03-15 Thread Jim Reisert AD1C
I was able to duplicate the DX4WIN Data Updater problem on a Windows
XP SP2 system, where it always wants to update the updater program.
After upgrading to Service Pack 3, the problem remained. There are
still 98+ more Microsoft updates to download and install.

I made a small change to the program that seems to have fixed it.
Incidentally, this is the same change I made for the IOTA fullist.xml
file last year. I have not tested this yet on my main computer which
did NOT show the problem.

In a little while, I'll upload a test version for people to try out.
This won't be the final version, as there is one more small change I
want to make (I hope you'll like it).

Then hope this problem doesn't happen again in November when USA time
changes back from daylight to standard time.

Re: [Dx4win] Update on Updater

2012-03-15 Thread Jim Reisert AD1C
Good news:

I pulled out my laptop running Windows XP which is fully up-to-date on
fixes and I can duplicate the problem there too.

Bad news:

The fix I tried, which makes the program work on Windows XP, does NOT
work on Windows 7.

1. If you have the update problem, were you running Windows XP or
Windows Vista/7?

2. Does anyone running Windows XP *NOT* have the problem? This is
also important information.

I know the Perl libraries have some issues with Daylight Savings Time.
I thought I had fixed this last fall, but apparently not. It may not
be fully fixable without re-writing the program using a Microsoft
compiler, which I just don't have time to do.

Maybe the fix is something like if the file on the web sit differs
*MORE* than one hour from the file on the computer, then it needs
updating. I hadn't thought of this as a possible solution until
right now. This means if I release updates, they must be more then
one hour apart. I think I can live with this restriction.

Thanks - Jim

2012-03-15 Thread Alan Sewell N5NA
I haven't been following the Updater thread too closely so I'm not sure
what the problem has been. I haven't run the updater since December I
think.

I just ran it. It says I have version 4.6 and said I have the latest
version. It proceeded to update 7 files. Checking my Save directory it
looks like the files updated.

I'm using XP Pro SP3.

2012-03-15 Thread Brian Bird
I am having the problem running under Vista. I do have the update problem every
time I run the program. Even running the program back to back to back. So not
sure if the hour timeframe you mention would do anything different.

I'm away from home now (I'm a pilot for the airlines) and don't carry that
computer with me on the road. Looking forward on what you find out. I can run
it when I get back home this weekend to see how it works again.

The joys of maintaining software.

Nothing seems to change does it? This was a typical problem in the 60's,
70's, 80's, etc. Back in the dark ages prior to 1990, people used to
change whole operating systems when they released a new computer. Now the
computer stays the same and they just change the operating system.

Actually, things are better on a percentage basis, but we all are doing
more things so we are behind in terms of absolute numbers of challenges.

Re: [Dx4win] Update on Updater

2012-03-15 Thread Jim Reisert AD1C
No mas!

I have enough responses, thanks. I have a fix in the works, I just
need to test it when I get home. I'll try to release the new updater
some time tonight (Friday UTC).

If your .MAS1 file keeps updating over and over again, that's the same
daylight savings time problem. The only file that seems to be
consistently correct (not updated) is the fullist.xml file from RSGB
for IOTA, maybe because it's coming from a different server. That
file did not need a special Perl routine (Win32::UTCFileTime) to work
around Windows DST bugs. However, this routine may not take care of
all cases. The fix I have will.
