Hello friends,
Last weekend we enjoyed good reception except for the Sunday 2330 UTC
broadcast, which was inaudible just about everywhere. I had no reception in
Virginia, so I used an SDR in Montana. That signal deteriorated quickly, so I
switched to a receiver in Michigan, which also went downhill. Finally, I found
a receiver in Ohio that allowed me to complete the half hour.

This weekend’s Shortwave Radiogram will mostly be in MFSK32. There will be one
weird twist:One news item will be transmitted in 8PSK-500F, followed by
8PSK-1000F. This experiment is in the category of
probably-won’t-work-but-worth-a-try. These 8PSK modes are very fast (1690 and
3386 wpm) and really designed more for VHF/UHF than for HF. But their forward
error correction (hence the F) might give them a chance on HF.

The chances for successful decode of the 8PSK modes will be improved by using
the pilot tone feature in Fldigi: Configure > Miscellaneous > Misc > Modems >
PSK: In the 8 psk box, select Pilot tone.

Unfortunately, the 8PSK-F modes cannot (yet) be decoded by TIVAR or AndFlmsg. If
you use these Android apps, you will be left out for only about a minute.
There are slower 8PSK-F modes (125F and 250F) perhaps more suitable for HF, but
I have had problems decoding them from recordings. We will try these versions
of 8PSK later when any bugs are fixed.

Here is the lineup for ShortwaveRadiogram, program 22,18-19 November 2017, all
in MFSK32 except where noted:

1:29 Program preview
2:24 2017 Freedom of the Net report*
12:10 What countries fight hardest for the climate?*
21:56 8PSK-500F and 8PSK-1000F experiment
