Another problem with the review process is that often a reviewer or
associate editor will be considered sufficient authority to provide
objective and accurate comments on a manuscript, yet often this is not
the case. They may be much less familiar with the material and its
larger context
Dear David,
To write a critic to paper is what we did in:
D. Alonso and M. Pascual (2006). A keystone mutualism drives pattern in a
power function. Technical Comment. *Science, 313*: 1739b
J. Chave, D. Alonso and R. S. Etienne (2006). Comparing models of species
abundance. *Nature, 441*: E1-E2*.
that is demonstrably of
concern to researchers in ecology. Perhaps I should have submitted them
anonymously?

As an editor of a journal I have been surprised to find only a single time
in five years that a review was possibly unfair,
and that one was unfairly positive. It has been refreshing to find that
most people review manuscripts

So as a reviewer, if you want to publish your own review reports
once the original paper has been published, since, as Hal said,
the reviews are copy-right materials by their own authors by default, you
should be allowed to do it.

I agree completely with Kevin that reviewers should sign their review.
That's what I started to do and I will not make any reviews for journals

On the other hand, if the reviewers are anonymous, the authors should be,
too. I think transparency is a bad thing, in this case; I think reviews
should be double-blind.
While reviewer anonymity allows reviewers
original data, and novel interpretations are not
good science. I reserve the right to protest.
