Hello EcoLoggers,

We are recruiting a Ph.D. Graduate Research Assistant in Wildlife Sciences for
a recently
funded project based at Mississippi State University in Starkville, MS. The
selected candidate
will conduct research relating to habitat selection and movement by
white-tailed deer
(Odocoileus virginianus) across landscape and hunter density treatments. The
student will
develop skills relating to quantitative and applied ecology and wildlife
management in
collaboration with both academic and government researchers. See below for the
full
announcement.

Please feel free to share this announcement with whomever you feel might be
interested.
Thank you.

Title: Movement Ecology of White-tailed Deer in Response to Human Predation

Project Description: We seek a highly qualified and motivated student for a
Ph.D. position in
wildlife ecology. This project will investigate how adult male white-tailed
deer move and
select habitat in response to hunting pressure. Special emphasis will be given
to quantifying
differences in space use and movement due to potentially confounding effects
(e.g.,
landscape structure, habitat composition, and hunter density). Opportunities
for
complementary research may include (but are not limited to) prediction of
movement and
animal distribution, quantification of habitat- and site-specific fitness, and
model evaluation
and calibration.

Compensation: A research stipend of $21,000 per year and full tuition and
health insurance
will be provided.

Beginning date: January 2016.

Closing Date: Open until filled.

Required Qualifications: Background in wildlife ecology, zoology, or related
discipline; ability
to participate in capture and handling of live deer.

Preferred Qualifications: Well developed quantitative and writing skills;
demonstrated
teamwork and networking skills (e.g., collaborative research environments);
experience
working with biotelemetry data using GIS software and Program R, and with
spatial analysis;
3.5 GPA on M.S., and GRE score above 160.

To apply, please email the following: (1) cover letter describing credentials
and professional
goals; (2) a resume/CV; (3) three letters of reference emailed separately; and
(4) a copy of
university transcripts and GRE/TOEFL scores. Formal application to MSU,
including official
transcripts and GRE, is required subsequent to selection of the successful
candidate.
